"The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground" ... Hamilton: now that Laurens is gone I'm gonna post for the world to see that I cheated on my lovely and caring wife Burr: why Hamilton: Laurens is basically 85% of my impulse control
"The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground." It wasn't just Laurens who was gone- anyone who could have potentially slapped some sense into Hamilton was out of the picture. Washington was dead, Angelica was in London, and Aaron Burr was no longer his friend.
Alex's voice when he says "I couldn't seem to die," and "A total stranger moved to kindness," sounds like he's trying not to cry. It makes me want to cry every time
When you think about it this was probably the first time Lin had sung this in front of a crowd (I think?) so it might actually be Lin desperately trying not to tear up :0
I understand why they cut that extra verse it doesn't flow with the rest of the song but... I can't help but feel like it was important to show to the audience WHY he did it "The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground, the enemies I've made will have nothing on me now." Literally nothing was holding Alexander back, and he felt as if he had nothing left to lose but he forgot about Eliza. That's why I love this version.
I also think it might be part of Laurens's actor having to change into Philip for the very next song but I feel like with a little more time and refining the melody/just wearing a quick costume change (it's really just the same clothes but a different jacket and hair) it would have worked. I'm really sad this wasn't the final version. It just felt stronger and more emotional.

It is exactly what I was thinking. The extra lines made me actually understand why he did it. The Laurens part caught me off guard though. That is where I began to cry.
I believe I read some where that the reason this version didn't make it is because Lin cut "let it go" and he thought that Laurens singing "let it go" for no reason and had no connection to any other song would have been confusing and out of place for the audience
@@azi1936 its kinda interesting about the US history, but knowing they didd so much more things that were bad the school stystems could teach us the ups and lows for example jefferson
this is my first time listening to the workshop version and like the first minute I was like "wtf its literally the same thing" and thEN LAURENS SHOWED UP AND NOW IM SOBBING IN A CORNER
It’s because Lin knew the audience would be crying too hard for them to finish performing without one of the cast succumbing to forgetting their lines or crying too
The reason they used the version they did, I believe, is to keep to there being no Lafayette, Hercules, John, and Peggy in the second act, and being only in the first half, which makes the first song much more enjoyable when they all sing "I- died for him" Being both Phillip and John, "We- fought with him" Being Lafayette and Hercules, but also Madison and Jefferson. " and "Me - I loved him" being the Schuyler sisters but also Maria.
HCXWJ "to keep them being only in the first half" must be the most boring reason I've ever read. I'm pretty sure most people would not feel the enjoyment of the first song negatively impacted in ANY way had these few lines been left in the show. If anything, it would only make them more emotional and would also help to give the most important person in Alexander Hamilton's life the closure he fucking deserved.
I'm sorry for phrasing it wrong, what I meant was I believe if they had Laurens in the second act, it might have ruined the immersion and damaged the pure cleverness put into this play.
HCXWJ No, I don't think you've phrased it wrong, I just don’t agree with what you said. My comment wasn't meant as an attack, pardon my choice of words. I get what you're trying to say, but I don't think it's a valid reason to drop these brilliant lyrics. For example, Jefferson and Madison are both mentioned in act one, and I don't see people complaining about that, seeing as by the time their names are dropped, both actors are still in their roles of Hercules and Lafayette. The lyrics fit the story, which is why I think they should've let the Hurricane lyrics the way they originally had it. Note that the changes are not only that Laurens is in the song, but he also sings the words "Let it go" to Hamilton. Those belong to another song by the same name they later scrapped, in which Eliza and Washington, two important people in Hamilton's life, sing those words to try and keep Hamilton from doing something stupid after Burr snatches Schuyler's senate seat and Ham feels attacked. Laurens singing these words in Hurricane is only fitting, since he was arguably the most important person in Hamilton's life and probably 90% of his impulse control. Here he is either a voice in Hamilton's head or a ghost, desperately screaming at Hamilton not to write the Reynolds Pamphlet and ruining his own life. Hamilton answers this plea by saying that since the "friend who would tell (him) not to do it is in the ground", he has nothing to lose and basically doesn’t care if he ruins his life because nothing really matters anymore. Not only does this version of the song give Lauren's character some sort of closure (since he basically just died at the end of act one and is never spoken of again until the very end, even though irl, Hamilton was a completely changed man after his death and grieved deeply for him), it is also much more emotional for the audience to have that throwback. Hamilton going into overdrive because of his friend's death sounds much more probable than him just being incredibly stupid and not realizing the consequences of his actions.
I heard that Lin Manuel Miranda scrapped Let It Go, because he didn’t want Eliza=Elsa memes. I also think he could’ve done it because he didn’t want legal issues over the song’s name, but I’m not sure.
"the friend who would tell me not to is in the ground" basically hes saying that if Laurens was around and told him not to instead of his other friends that (historically) were like "dude no". Theres also that possiblity that had Laurens been alive during this he would have convinced Hamilton to go with Eliza. In letters Hamilton told Laurens how he hated everyone (himself included) everyone but Laurens. Its said that when Laurens died and Hamilton got the news about it he was never quite the same. He became more quick to the draw, more angry. So long story short Laurens was basically Hamiltons level ground to stand on and when he died it got uneven.
I think part of the reason they cut this is because in The Reynolds Pamphlet Philip is there, being shown the pamphlet by Burr Madison and Jefferson and unless Anthony is speedy quick, that costume change might not be made in time
Everyone's talking about Laurens, but we can we just talk about how Burr is called "the enemy" that will have nothing on him, this is where they got after everything they went through, eventually leading to their duel.
They probably removed this because the original Schuyler Defeated and Let it go was also removed. The audience would've been confused to see Laurens singing Let it go in the background

the john laurens interlude is in the play, but not in the soundtrack. that's good, because me and my Mom listen to act 2 when were in the car and It wouldn't be good if we both would cry.
Fun fact: It was proven that, while Alexander was writing the Reynolds Pamphlet (don't know if Im spelling it write) that he was not thinking of Eliza or how it would affect her and their family. I really like how this song shows that.
Laurens: or you can let it go... Ham: the only friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground Laurens: or you can let it go...BRO ARE YOU NOT HEARING ME Ham: writes Reynolds Pamphlet Laurens: BRO WTH IS WRONG WITH U
this was super good. I lobe the “or you could let it go” along with the “wait for it” but I feel like Lin’s lyrics distract from the vibe of the song. I like the one we know now. Lin is still beyond genius.
Holy crap this is incredible. I adore the extra lyrics so much, but the animatic is AMAZING. The use of color, of light and dark... this is gorgeous. Thank you so very much for making this!
okay but the fact that hamilton always said to laurens "do not throw away your shot", but now laurens is in the back telling him to "let it go". im on the ground, im in agony
Just to make things sadder i found this article hamilton also suffered from documented periods of depression. ... However, in Ron Chernow's biography, Alexander Hamilton, there is a delineation between his feelings of despair and his grief, a depressive state that extends beyond his losses. Chernow describes a man prone to depths of mood Edit: he also had bipolar disorder
I love this version coz it shows how much Laurens meant to Hams that he was the only one that could have stopped him publishing the Reynolds pamphlet. Not Eliza. Not Angelica. Not his children. No one. Except Laurens. My LAMS HEART

I know that everyone is sad over Laurens (I am too) but like- Can we discuss how beautiful Anthony’s voice is? That *or you could let it go* sounds angelic.
Fun Fact! The Reynolds Pamphlet was published on August 25th, 1797. Two days later, on August 27th, 1797, would have been the 15 year anniversary of John Laurens' death, as he was killed on August 27th, 1782 at age 27 (he would have been 28 a month later on October 28th).
This song is just so important because it explains why Alexander did what he did, even throughout the whole musical. Complete strangers helped him out of hell, and his whole town watched as he was the first to actually make it out, and they were all counting on him to do them justice. He knew that if this got out by rumor, it could ruin his whole career, and he felt as if he would've let down his hometown, all the people that worked so hard to get him their. He was afraid if he didn't do this, he would be throwing away his shot, as his town, and all those who helped him watched, hence why he also sounds as if he's on the verge of a panic attack during the song. That's just my idea, thanks for reading this if you got this far haha
I keep returning for the beautiful art, and when he sings: The enemies I've made won't have anything on me now." That now is so eloquent and beautiful and gosh, I adore this musical.

I always cry when he said about his mother but when he talk about Laurens i SOB, and then my mom was like "WHAT THE HECK! ARE U OKAY!?" i just said "LAURENS MIJO!!"
Wow, this is beautiful. I absolutely love how you put the word "Death" from "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory" on the paper Alex was writing on. It really shows how he ruined his life by writing that pamphlet... Also, LAURENS FOSNDOSJDJS
That line when Hamilton talks about his mother and him were sick and she was holding him when she died but he couldn’t seem to die. Ugh such an emotional gut punch. Giving me PTSD vibes that at such a young age he had to go through that and carry the weight of living.
Agh!! I love this version more than the actual song! Like John's voice just hurts to hear. And the line just adds so much to the song! He knows John would beg him to think twice about doing this and he feels like he's got nothing left to loose. Adding Eliza at the end is so sad and perfect since it shows how he has more than he ever thought to lose. The other one he loves in his life. I cry every time I hear this... ;-;

Fun fact: It was proven that, while Alexander was writing the Reynolds Pamphlet (don't know if Im spelling it write) that he was not thinking of Eliza or how it would affect her and their family.
I really like how this song shows that.
Laurens: or you can let it go...
Ham: the only friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground
Laurens: or you can let it go...BRO ARE YOU NOT HEARING ME
Ham: writes Reynolds Pamphlet
Laurens: BRO WTH IS WRONG WITH U
LAURENS DONT DO THIS TO ME
#BRINGBACKLAURENS2K16
i love how "death" is written on the Reynolds Pamphlet
Goddammit that part about Laurens! I am NOT crying. Lin you brilliant bastard, that needed to be in the final cut...
"The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground."
N O
this was super good. I lobe the “or you could let it go” along with the “wait for it” but I feel like Lin’s lyrics distract from the vibe of the song. I like the one we know now. Lin is still beyond genius.
or you can let it go...
STAY ALIVE FOR ME
LET IT GO
LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY
Alexander Hamilton But He's A Spooky Scary Skeleton You're smiling
because you know I'm right, and if the president were-
(finish my sentence)
LunagirlMSP here, he would tell you the same thing
(This wasn't directed to me but whatever)
Well the president's _not_ here--
"I heard about Burr!"
chara ruby you didn’t kill him, did you?
“Were you here this whole time?”
Hurricane has always been one of my favorite songs from Hamilton. I don’t know why. But this makes it even better.
gfdi Laurens my dead gay son,,
ikr
laurens may be dead but he lives on in all of us,,
hamemeton Laurens lives on in the heart of every gay, what a beautiful world,,
Just to make things sadder i found this article
hamilton also suffered from documented periods of depression. ... However, in Ron Chernow's biography, Alexander Hamilton, there is a delineation between his feelings of despair and his grief, a depressive state that extends beyond his losses. Chernow describes a man prone to depths of mood
Edit: he also had bipolar disorder
The pain in Lin’s voice Breaks my heart....
It sounds like he’s actually crying!
(I know he’s a actor but still....)
I love this version coz it shows how much Laurens meant to Hams that he was the only one that could have stopped him publishing the Reynolds pamphlet. Not Eliza. Not Angelica. Not his children. No one. Except Laurens. My LAMS HEART
I FORGOT THE LINE 'MY FRIEND WHO WOULD TELL ME NOT TO DO IT IS IN THE GROUND'
SO I CAME UP WITH THE ALTERNATIVE
'I'M STANDING AT THE SHORELINE AND I'M GONNA FIND A WAY TO DROWN'
Alex Aliona ooo that’s pretty good
Well, the only person whose opinion I've ever really cared about is dead now, so I don't care what happens to me anymore as long as I can somehow finish what we've started.
yeah don't mind me i'll just be in my corner
*violent sobbing*
the normal version has me in sniffles sure but god this one just destroys me somehow
YEAh i feel you ;;
i cant believe......you made me cry.......over two 200 year old dead men..............
but lauRENS MY SON THE MOST PRECIOUS CINNAMON ROLL MY SMOL GAY ;A; lams feels everywhere
i cant believe i drew 200 yr old dead men
you are the epitome of the downfall of humanity
"The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground."💔💔
And that's when every single person's heart melted.. I did not think I would cry in this one. Now I prefer the workshop version. This is beautiful.
The fact that Lin have cut the only moment where Alex talk about Laurens after his death hurt me
“I catch a glimpse of the other side. Laurens leads a soldier’s chorus on the other side”
@@xanderpatterson4729 okay one of the two moments he talked about him
ham:”my enemies won’t have anything on me now”
burr: wait for it *goes into the Reynolds pamphlet* there it’s
I know that everyone is sad over Laurens (I am too) but like-
Can we discuss how beautiful Anthony’s voice is?
That *or you could let it go* sounds angelic.
Fun Fact! The Reynolds Pamphlet was published on August 25th, 1797. Two days later, on August 27th, 1797, would have been the 15 year anniversary of John Laurens' death, as he was killed on August 27th, 1782 at age 27 (he would have been 28 a month later on October 28th).
xXx Jason Todd xXx not fun
I keep returning for the beautiful art, and when he sings: The enemies I've made won't have anything on me now." That now is so eloquent and beautiful and gosh, I adore this musical.
;;;; thank you aa,,
yes omg lins voice may not be perfect but it definitely is heartwrenching how much emotion u can feel from it,,
NO the Laurens part has caused me to go into my depressed state
"the friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground"
*through my tears* MY SON MY BABY NO I LOVE HIM NO KASNBDJDIDHDBDH
I get shivers when Laurens sang
NO U CINAMMON ROLL!!!
1) This is amazing. I love lyric vids as much as animatics because you have the added option of making clever captions like you did with NY and moment) (and ignorance and resistence)
2) Your style is really cool) Ham looks handsome as all hell, and Eliza is slightly anime but i am about 150% okay with that
3) I am so weak for metaphorical and minimalistic uses of colour this vid might be my downfall.
4) I have never heard this version of the song, but I can attest to the fact that you chose the one that would hit the hardest and it did, so good for you
5) Thank you.
aaahgh this comment really made my day you have no idea,,
1) thank you aah i was hoping that someone would pick up on some of the captions ///
2) haha i have been influenced by anime for too many years of my life ;v;;
3) im a very colour orientated person so i was worried it might seem a bit much but this gave me a bit more confidence in my art /)///(\
4) yES this version of hurricane made me cry?? while the final cut made me horrified at his desicions this one just made me bawl
5) you're welcome !!
hamemeton You're welcome. You're a really cool artist and you should have all the encouragement. All of it)
The “I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory” hits me Everytime I love it
JESUS, THIS WILL, or at least should, GET SUPER FAMOUS THROUGH THE HAMILTON FANDOM! Shoot, this was so good.
omg that is such high praise pls ////// thank you for watching/commenting!!
"The friend who would tell me not to do this is in the ground" so many situations fitting that one.
HAMILTON: well now that my boyf- I mean friend is gone, so is my impulse control
LAURENS. IM GONNA CRY
Omg I would love the workshop version to have been used in the actual play ^^ that's would have been so cool
OMG THE END !!!!!!! LAURENS! ! ○_○
"The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground"
Me-FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
*SOBS UNCONTROLLABLY*
That line when Hamilton talks about his mother and him were sick and she was holding him when she died but he couldn’t seem to die.
Ugh such an emotional gut punch. Giving me PTSD vibes that at such a young age he had to go through that and carry the weight of living.
"The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground"
Wow, I chose today of all days to watch this. RIP John Laurens
1:45 - 2:12 WHY DIDNT LIN KEEP THIS PART
This is wonderful. I go into schools to teach middle schoolers about him and will use it to transition from Nevis to America.
oh my god!! /// thats such an honour aaah ;;///;; thank you so much!
Impulse control for A.Ham
25% Eliza
The rest is divided between john and Washington
Hamilton: The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground..
Laurens: Or you could let it goooo..
Me: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Hamilton: the friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground
Me: JOHN MY BABY, HAMILTON! HAPPY THOUGHTS!!
THE FRIEND WHO WOULD TELL ME NOT TO DO IT IS IN THE GROUND
I STOPPED BREATHING
Laurens singing 'let it go' is my mood.
Why'd Lin cut that out, it's Soo good!
I have no idea why I love the feeling of my heart shattering into a million pieces :,)
N O this is when Let It Go was still in there AND F R I C K L A U R E N S M Y S O N WH YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
why am i crying
1:49
I’m not crying you ate
Are
I love the motif from Let It Go coming back, such an underrated cut song
Agh!! I love this version more than the actual song! Like John's voice just hurts to hear. And the line just adds so much to the song! He knows John would beg him to think twice about doing this and he feels like he's got nothing left to loose. Adding Eliza at the end is so sad and perfect since it shows how he has more than he ever thought to lose. The other one he loves in his life.
I cry every time I hear this... ;-;
Alex: You can't expose me, I over share
LAURENS WAS DA MOIRAIL YASSSS
UM NO YOU CANNOT PULL AT MY HEARTSTRINGS LIKE THIS
NOT LAURENS AND HAMILTON
1:47 I just realized he meant what he meant by that. Man I think this is the first time I've cried over this musical.
“My FRIEND who would tell me not to do it, is in the ground”
MEH BBI LAURENSS NUU
“ the friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground” LIN HOLY CRAP
