I've heard many versions of this song. There is no competition in how it could be done, or should... Just sometimes you know, that the mysterious window was open, and you were in touch with every word, every sound... not even like you wanted it to be, but much deeper - how it wanted to be by a soul which would die for every word and every sound. That how I understand renaissance and early baroque were for people 400 years ago...
that is how Music should be understood by any people in any epoque....to be in tuch with every word, every sound and to have a soul that would be ready to die for each word and each sound
There's a slightly better recording also by the Mirandola ensemble at Classical MPR, www.classicalmpr.org/story/2014/10/29/meet-class-notes-artist-the-mirandola-ensemble
Can she excuse my wrongs with Virtue's cloak? Shall I call her good when she proves unkind? Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke? Must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find? No no: where shadows do for bodies stand Thou may'st be abus'd if thy sight be dim Cold love is like to words written on sand Or to bubbles which on the water swim. Wilt thou be thus abused still Seeing that she will right thee never? If thou canst not o'ercome her will Thy love will be thus fruitless ever. Was I so base, that I might not aspire Unto those high joys which she holds from me? As they are high , so high is my desire: If she this deny, what can granted be? If she will yeld to that which reason is It is Reason's will that Love should be just Dear make me happy still be granting this Or cut off delays if that die I must. Better a thousand times to die Than for to live thus still tormented: Dear, but remember it was I Who for thy sake did die contended.
Esta versión transmite exactamente lo que la letra dice. Felicitaciones! El coro es fabuloso y los instrumentos transportan a esa época tan clásica y sentimental.
One of the best renditions available on YT. It surpasses most of the other performances not only in technical aspects, but also as far as taste is concerned, in the overall esthetic concept of the piece. Although there's quite a lot of things happening (like the choral polyphony, the vocal expression of the soloist, some guitar agréments), it's not exaggerated, cheap or tawdry, as opposed to many other approaches, possibly the epitome of the worst being that of Mrs. Figueras (whose vision of this piece is somewhere between coma and epilepsy, selective mutism included). Respect, fellow(esse)s, and waiting for more!
One of my favorite of Dowland's songs! Well done!
One of my favorite versions.
This is simply stunning.
A good dance rythm. Scandalous words !
This is the best version I think I've found on youtube, and I have looked far and wide. The singers and of course the guitarist are so excellent.
Shedding tears for it.
This is such a funny song to me. "If she will yeild to that which reason is" is just such a good diss.
To me this song is an example of why we need to stop looking at old music solely as bastions of western culture and not simply music
Nicely put! 👌 💐 🙏
