    We are very new to the game and looking to get into direct shipper loads. It’s very apparent that load boards are not for scalable businesses and it’s just a way to get our feet in the door. I am looking forward to a video from you specifically on how to book direct to shipper loads. Great content!

    This was fantastic, and not for the reason I thought. It was great to see the breakdown in longterm goals, with regards to scaling, and how that played into DAT & ITS load boards. Inconsistent revenue isn’t talked about enough, when it comes to being a DAT player. Markets flip and plenty of owner ops go under. It happened, big time, in 2020. You HAVE to have a strategy. Whether that’s a direct shipper OR broker partnership - there has to be a plan. The market is brutal and can turn on a dime.

If you are a smaller delivery company you can probably work out something with a smaller shipper if you can come to a mutal agreement to be dedicated to a customer/shipper.

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  ปีที่แล้ว

      No one is comparing drivers to wheat. The service itself is very much commoditized among small carriers. Also, there isn't a high demand/low supply issue at all... in fact... it's the complete opposite (which explains the tanking spot rates). If you would like to have a honest discussion without strawmanning my arguments, I would be more than happy to.

    One doubt that I don’t really think was answered, in this video. I have been a broker my self for 6-7 years (Have my company) I have my own customers with my brokerage and this takes me to the next step my doubt, I also just opened up my trucking company about a year ago, so to get direct shipper loads you need to start with load boards until you can really offer a shipper or direct client a service that requires a truck fleet not only 2-3-4 trucks do you agree or what do you think, and/or how many trucks do you think is enough for my trucking company get/jump to the next level ??

    • @Gill22

  • @leonardomichua
    @leonardomichua ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought it was basic common sense. Why would a company pay a middle man that has no trucks to transport their goods? They pay broker's because they know nothing about their transportation and would rather pay someone to take care of that issue for them. They may never even see the face of their broker, but they leave that responsibility to them. That's what they pay them to do.
    "Take care of our transportation for us because we have to focus on our store/company/business. We can't be bothered with finding employee's, trucks, and fix maintenance issues. Thats a whole another department that we know nothing about"
    It's pretty common sense why a company would use a middle man instead of directly hiring a one man person. Broker will find someone else to fill in the gaps if someone quits. Imagine if the person quits; the company will have no products/goods. Can't really stand around and be twiddling their thumbs

    Everyone knows all of this. It’s common sense to any trucker or owner operator. We all know they direct shippers are the only way to survive out here, but it’s not that simple. It takes a neat miracle to acquired their dedicated lanes and enough to keep your businesses sustainable. You might find one, and then you’ll be out the first time you cannot cover one of their loads… It’s not just hard to do. It’s virtually impossible, anc it’s why 90% of the new hotshot industry is hanging it up and quitting. The industry is a trap. Stay far away from it if you have any god damn sense. You will lose everything.

    when you offer low rates to direct shippers at first, Is it simply to get you name basically in their bubble? then as you work more you get to up it?

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i provide them with service packages at a competitive rate, not at “low” rates. The whole point of going direct with a shipper is to make more money on a consistent stream. If you don’t think you can provide additional products/services that a shipper would value, then yes, definitely consider underbidding the spot market on a trial basis and then discuss the possibility of signing a long term contract!

      Currently we don’t have any flatbed trucks but we’re definitely open to exploring that market! I want us to focus primarily on dry van and reefer loads but i also want to get into flatbed work. Becoming industry experts in the “big 3” is definitely a goal we hope to accomplish very soon!

    Gil, "On time and safely" is NOT a good assumption my brother. Not by a long shot. Just being on time with a load is 80% of the battle. Safe? I take that to mean in one piece. I own two semi's and two step decks. My competition, based on feedback from brokers/shippers, my competitors get both conditions (on time and safe) right about 50% of the time. When they see my company name, we're getting it right over 99% of the time and are A rated. Do I understand the point of your video? Sure, if I'm trying to scale up to be JB Hunt or some smaller regional version of them, but I'm not interested because it's all a gigantic pain in the ass vs just work for myself. One more thing: I'll agree to disagree with the premise of your video that I'm a commodity. If the shipper can find a step deck with ramps IMMEDIATELY, they sure as hell don't pay me like that :-). They pay me DAM GOOD for those loads. If I owned a plain jane dry van or flatbed? then I see more of your point. Load boards have been good to me - for now. I won't throw this idea of yours out with the bath water because I mix and match strategies all the time... hell, whatever work$ is all good with me. Keep up the great work!

      Thanks brother and yes i was speaking mostly of the big three: dry van, reefer, and flatbed loads. By the very nature of having specialized equipment, you are valued. However, i would argue you are still a commodity. The loose definition being you can’t add additional value and differentiate your service from your competitors just based on the type of equipment you have. In the video i mentioned you can still make really really good money booking off of load boards, however, as you mentioned, this is more for those who want to be a small “big” company and run a much bigger operation.
      All in all, this video is not to say load boards are bad by any means. We still use them! However, most O/O’s (the ones running dry van, reefer, flatbed loads with no specified niche) should invest some time networking and finding direct shipper loads because of the value prop you’re able to offer!

      @@Gill22// I feel you on the term "commodity". During the vid, I actually stopped it and said to myself this dude is on point - which is why the basic premise is an excellent consideration to keep in mind. Hell, I was the first person I can think of to use the term "gross sales" when talking about my trucking operation income so words (and terms) make a big difference for those of us interested in working smarter vs harder. In thinking more about your ideas here I see advantages and disadvantages to contracted (dedicated) vs loadboard (spot) freight sales. One interesting comparison you mentioned was steady cash flow. To stay steady for that dedicated customer, I can't have a truck go down - in which case I would want a second truck. On the other side of the equation, a steady out and back has enormous benefits in terms of setting up my truck for ONLY that customer. I carry tarps, straps and enough chains and binders to imprison King Kong. My equipment alone costs more than a typical used car (yesterday's prices). It's exhausting sometimes carrying TOOLS of the trade for almost any stepdeck job EVERYWHERE vs just what I need.
      The last but most important consideration is sustainability but from an emotional and mental health aspect. I LOVE seeing different places but it's also an enormous mental stress to CONSTANTLY be at yet another different pickup and drop-off. Every now and again it's cool but it would be nice to repeat some customers which I've had the opportunity to do.

    Ok give me the direct shipper contracts Mr. Stop all load boards .

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No one is telling you to stop all load board usage. I thought I made it pretty clear that the point of the video was to teach people the fundamental reason WHY they need to move from a primarily spot rate to contract rate and the benefits that come along with that.
      Even big companies have to use load boards to cover some deadhead or return shipments so I wouldn't make that argument.
      Before leaving a sarcastic comment, make sure you actually understand the contents of the video Mr. Sanjurjo.
