  • Accurate pressure measurement is key in vacuum-assisted production. Only the right pressure can ensure the efficiency of the process and a high-quality end product. There are a variety of different sensor technologies available to check that this pressure is attained. Each technology measures a specific vacuum range with the highest accuracy. In this video, we will show you the principle behind cold cathode technology.
    For high and ultra-high vacuum applications between 2·10-3 and 5·10-9 hPa (mbar), cold cathode technology is a good choice. These cost-effective and robust gauges are insensitive to contamination and have good measurement accuracy. To determine pressure, they measure the electrical conductivity of a plasma. A magnetic field causes electrons to move in a spiral formation. When a gas molecule is hit by an electron, a cation is released. This moves to the cathode and generates an electrical signal. The more cations, the higher the current and the higher the pressure.
