I absolutely love your little birch in the birch border. I bought the trinity college birch last year as its supposed to be a smaller variety. It came to me at about 7ft and is already 9/10 ft tall. Although it's staked at the base I still panic in high storms as it bends backwards and forwards and Although I'd love it at a decent size, it frightens me as its less than 20ft away from the house and about 5ft from next doors fence. I wish I knew how to shape mine so it looks like yours. Yours is amazing and If I knew how to get a birch to look that brilliant, I'd def buy more
Betula Trinity College is small to medium. Early pruning will greatly help, and don't be afraid to remove larger branches at a young age. If you're in the uk, it's better to do this once the leaves are on so late spring. Look up pictures of your preferred shape and use it as a rough guide. Make sure it's anchored in until its roots settle, they are shallow rooted so shouldn't cause a problem to your property, make sure it is well watered in its first couple of years , don't overwater it either. If you check out some of my videos, I explain how to prune without compromising the overall shape. Hope this helps...
@upatgrassybottom9859 thanks so much I've been too busy enjoying your garden tours but will def find the pruning videos now that I know they are there. I was always on the understanding not to prune a birch in spring and winter because of bleeding? And only to late summer prune. I now dream of a birch the same as yours. Can I take out that main leader? Or will another branch grow twice as quick to take over? I really appreciate yoir time thank you. I've found you on Instagram now too so will have a good look at your account later. You've worked so hard on your garden. It's amazing. I'm after more of a cottage garden myself, but some plants that you have will definitely look interesting in my garden too. Thanks for putting the names of plants on the screen. I can pause and Google them. Best wishes davena in the Midlands in the uk
Hello Davena, the sap will have stopped rising once the leaves are fully formed, you can remove the leader, your tree will use another main branch as a leader but you can cut this down by a third, keep checking it every month or so and keep trimming in any that may become the next leader. Hope that helps.
Looking beautiful Richard. Could you please tell me what the large leaved plant is ,in your orchard border, quite big leaves with serrated edge,i would say its about 2ft tall, thanks in advance 😊

@lXlElevatorlXl if you were in the uk I would have sold you one, but I can't send them as I am only a private individual. I think they would be fine in Germany.
You and your garden deserve some type of award. It is fabulous. ❤
Thanks Lisa, I don't think I'll be awarded one!
I love your garden! Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks for looking

That should be klasea bulgarica, but there's a similar leaved one further down called cirsium tuberosum .

Did you show Stipa/Achnatherum Calamagrostis
I think it's on there
Hedgehogs and birds do eat slugs and snails, so if you poison them, they will die horrible deaths too.
Thanks for your concerns.
You are doing a great job, everything is coming along beautifully. I love your garden. 💚
Thank you so much!
