My dad built the stage and load-in area/business offices at The Viper Room (then called “The Central”) back in the early 80s. He also built the sound system there using elements from the back line PA and speakers he bought off of the David Bowie road crew (he was a roadie-turned-bodyguard for Bowie during the U.S. leg of the Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs tours in the mid-70s).
I remember being in The Central as a kid back then being loaded up with all the free soda I could drink (even poured by Bill Knorr, one of the two owners of venue back then) while my dad cut the braces and put the stage floor together.
They even gave him a free unlimited bar tab in appreciation for building the club, that (oddly enough) carried over to the changeover to The Viper Room when Depp bought into it. I saw this first hand the only other time I went there around fifteen years ago- he just pointed at s slip of paper behind the bar, and the bartender started dispensing drinks. Crazy stuff.
Even crazier was the fact the stage had remained unchanged (except for the addition of rugs and drapes) all that time too.
Sad to think it will be all gone at some point in the near future.

I've visited the Viper Room several times back in the days when Johnny Depp played there. I grew up on the Sunset Strip 1977-2015 either in clubs, bars, Tower Records, The Rainbow, Carney's, etc...
My old band "The Shout" played the Roxy, the Troubadour, the Starwood, etc...
So I knew and met many, many musicians and assorted other types. It was a great time and I do have a ton of stories... Good and sad.
But the saddest of all besides the death of River Phoenix (I was there a day before, and the day after he died)
Is the closing of the Cinerama Dome where I've been to a bunch of premieres, and always sat across from to watch the Hollywood Christmas Lane Parade every year from 1982-2007
That makes me tear up. A landmark above all others.

About 20 years ago in Roseville, Ca. I met a man (I can’t remember his name) at a really nice gym who was in his in eighties at the time. He told me he was the founder of the Guitar Center on Sunset. He took a liking to me and would tell me these really amazing detailed stories (I don’t think he was crazy!) of the famous musicians he met and personally knew in the 60’s. All of the rock icons you can think of, he shared these amazing stories with me.

I believe that Jordan the Lion actually was able to get access inside of the viper room a while ago, because he had a friend who was performing there that night, so he was able to go through to videotape and documente all of different areas inside as well as the backstage areas and the Green room. He also documented as much of the paintings and murals that he could. That place is just soaked in history (as well as a lot of alcohol and urine, amongst lots of other stuff if we're being honest here, lol). But, you should definitely check it out if you haven't already. That goes for everyone reading this, of course. Lol. Thank you though for taking us along for your sightseeing trip today. Another place that was some miles away from the strip, but was frequented by rockers was The Hollywood Tropicana, a baby oil/mud wrestling joint. The last time I was there, Bill Gazzarri came with two gorgeous girls as escorts and all the guys from Poison.

The Bullwinkle statue was not “in storage for 10 years.” It was removed (per the Jay Ward family) on 7/22/2013 and restored by Ricardo Scozzari of Burbank Furniture Restoration. The restored statue was unveiled and on display at the Beverly Hills Paley Center in October 2014 for a Jay Ward exhibit. Then it was displayed at the WeHo City Hall in 2016. It was set to be permanently installed on Holloway in early 2020 but Covid delayed it until the following year.

I lived in WeHo for 16 years just south of the Sunset Strip. Small correction, the current State House was not the house of blues. The House of Blues was actually across from the Comedy Store. They built a monstrosity in its footprint. But a good friend of mine stole Zozo while drunk... from the HOB property while it was still functioning. Its sitting in his living room. A 4' statue of African design. Hilarious story btw on how it happened😁. lol There was a huge hill in the back of the HOB after the parking lot... it involved rolling it and him loosing balance and rolling with it during the escape. PS my last day in California was 2021. So many memories... we actually played at all the venues there including the Cat Club before they changed the name. (West of the Whiskey, owned by the drummer(? I think) of the band Stray Cats.) Also, that building w/ the plants climbing up the side used to be Ticketmaster. Not sure if it is now. When Lemmy was still alive, I'd always see him playing Video Poker at the Rainbow sitting at the outside bar. I actually thought, I wonder if he has a gambling problem... but I don't think he did. Also what made the Viper Room rock is they actually took the time to curtain the stage. So you didn't have to watch the band set up. The curtain was pulled back dramatically when the music started. A great way to create the 'magic' of listening to a band there. (ie the big reveal) Not sure if Johnny came up with that but being in a band, if he did, that was great insight on performance impact. Just that small thing...

The Garden of Allah was torn down long before Joni's comnercial lament and replaced, at least nowdays, by a small mall. It was kind of trashy at best. If it hadn't been built by Rudoloh Valentino's widow Allie Nazimova nobody would have cared. The Vipet Room could hardly ever have been described as "Paradise". More like the nest of serpents it was named after. River Phoenix wasn't the only person who died there.

Inside the Rainbow Bar & Grill is part of a wall dedicated to the Hollywood Vampires. This was started in the early 1970's which started out as a softball team of musicians and quickly turned into a drinking group that resided at the Rainbow. The original member were Alice Cooper, Micky Dolenz, Keith Moon and Harry Nilsson, John Lennon and others would join when in town as would other musicians. Alice Cooper took the name and started the Hollywood Vampires band in 2015. So much Rock music history on Sunset and it's sad to see these venues being torn down for apartments and condo's. I remember when living in the LA area, exploring Sunset was like a mecca of rock music with so many many bands getting their start in those venues and where one could rub elbows with these stars. That goes for most of the leaders of the local communities. Most of Africa and Latin America probably has more honest and capable leadership than we currently do.
