Worked very hard for a long time. I don’t think people understand how hard his job was in terms of travelling and consistency. Now it’s like he’s on paid vacation. Deserved

Neither were to blame on reflection, it was FAI corruption and them setting up a world Cup training camp on the only island not fit for purpose with their star player recovering from injury and playing on a pitch that resembled a car park with no training gear. All on John Delaney, not on Mick or Roy

The biggest what if in Irish football if Keane went to that World Cup. Could of been different against Spain and then the next round against Korea 😮

I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Realistically, I have a better chance of beating Brock Lesnar or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at Powerlifting than Ireland winning the 2002 World Cup even if Keano played.
There are several footballers vastly superior to Keano who played in stronger teams and they have No World Cup to show for it.
2 classic examples are Messi and Ronaldo in their final World Cup later this year.

McCarthy said many times Ireland wouldn’t have got out of the group stage if he had played with that state of mind… and I believe him! Many international managers made mistakes by letting problematic players do what they wanted. It was a brave and good decision by Mick.

If Keano had gone to the 2002 World Cup, he would've probably upset at least some of his team-mates (at least those who didn't know how to handle him) from being too hard on them. Then, one of them would probably have secretly gone to speak to Mick on their behalf, after which Mick would've confronted Keano => Massive argument and fallout => Keano gets sent home by Mick, players' morale is terribly affected, and ROI fail to make it into the round of 16. Nuff said!

Not learning from your mistakes is exactly why some managers relegate clubs and find their level in the Championship. It's not replicating those mistakes that separates out the good managers. We all know that the FAI were a shambles back then but a good manager would have put the players first and not been a YES man 👍

McCarthy chose to confront Keane, his captain, best player and a fiery character, in front of the entire squad. That wasn't clever. He could have spoken to Keane in private but didn't have the intellect or management skills

Roy was annoyed Mick said he faked injury to skip the 2nd leg playoff in Tehran. He went back to Manchester, and played three full matches within one week on his 'injured knee'. Roy lost it because Mick was right.

@@toonarmy4424 No they aren't, there are far better players than Roy Keane who are still decent human beings. I've never heard of Larsson, Messi or Ronaldo conducting themselves like him, and the same goes for the great players of the past like Dalglish, Pele, Beckenbauer, Charlton etc.
