This was a great help in converting my earlier Word documents to 365. One thing that I have not been able to figure out: my version (2002) had a feature that would allow text in outline view to extend to the full width of the screen: Text>options>wrap to window. Does 365 have this feature?
Thank you so much for watching! I have actually been searching for a solution to that question since I created this tutorial and have yet to find an answer other than to zoom the text larger to fill the screen. I will be sure to post something if I find a better answer!
Hi Ms Erin! Can you make a turtorial about adding equation automatically with index? Also how to link this index to a new style for furture use? Thank you!👋
Your video was very easy to follow. Thank you. 🙂 I was wondering it you knew how to control the wrapping of body text in the outline. As I'm typing it wants to go to a new line sooner than I would like. Making the body text wider would also keep it from being so "tall".
That is a great question! I have struggled with that issue myself, and, unfortunately, haven't found a solution. If I do find the answer, I will be sure to post something about it. Thank you for watching!
That is an interesting question! Although you can add bullets and numbered lists to the outline view, the outline itself is meant to match the document's headings. I'm unaware of a way to make it match a list, instead. I do hope you find the solution you are looking for! Thank you for watching!
This was very helpful, thank you. I'm curious to know if you could help with another topic. I'm working on a book that has various sections (1.1, 1.2) and nested sections (1.2.2, 4.3.2, etc). I'm not sure yet about the order and may want to change the order around. Is there a way to change the order of sections and have the section numbers update?
Great question! Assuming you are creating your section numbers with Word's Multilevel List tool, you can select and then right-click the section number after moving the heading and then select "Continuous Numbering" from the shortcut menu. Although honestly, it may be more effective to move the text and then retype the heading. When you apply the style (Heading Level 1, 2, etc.,) the numbering should update automatically throughout. I wish you all the best with your project.
@@Mystic-Gearbox7 Thank you for the added information. This tutorial is only for Microsoft Word on a PC or Mac. Unfortunately, it doesn't apply to Word for the web (Microsoft 365), which has limited capabilities.
All the steps shown here are listed with images on my website at erinwrightwriting.com/outline-view-in-microsoft-word/. Thank you for watching!

Is there a way to use both outline view and bullets & numbering, so the outline view hierarchy matches the bullets/numbering hierarchy?

@@erinwrightwriting I found out that in Outline mode, I can rearrange the sections and the numbers will update :)
@@robertcastillo77 Excellent!
Ohhhh. This might work for me (non plotter)
I am glad to hear that! Thank you for watching!
Outline doesn't show for me. I don't know why.
I'm sorry to hear that! Which version of Word are you using?
@@erinwrightwriting I’m not sure, I went to Microsoft 365
