  • Starting an art career is hard, and figuring out how much money you should realistically expect when you're just starting out? even harder. In this video, I share how much I earn as an artist on youtube (currently with 10k subs) including the details of my first sponsorship deals!
    I'm not sharing my income as an artist to flex or solicit pity but as a community resource. I know all of you really value my transparency and I want to share everything I can with you. I don't really come from money and I know from experience that financial literacy and the income possibilities of a creative career are FAR from common knowledge.
    Building up income streams takes time, but it's definitely possible to succeed as an artist and creative.

    You're a huge reason as to why I started to take myself more seriously and work on my online presence as an artist! I'm moving a little slow, but I'm still working on it!
    Your videos are so informative and really help see what's to be excepted and achievable first starting out, thank you so much for all your hard work!
    Keep at it! You're doing awesome ♡

    I really have to say thank you for your bravery and transparency. I also think we should all talk more about money (in general) but this gives so much insight of an artist. and you mentioning the fact that all of us have to pay taxes was really great, too! A lot of people think what you earn is what you get but we all have to pay taxes

    • @KelseyRodriguez
      @KelseyRodriguez  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure! That tax bill will really hit you if you don’t prepare for it and set money aside every month. I know creators who’ve gone into credit card debt because they didn’t prepare, which terrifies me, so definitely worth thinking ahead!

    • @mochimona
      @mochimona 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KelseyRodriguez Indeed! And it always depends where you live and it always needs to be considered that you have money you have to pay for a system, like for me in germany it would be the healthcare system, next to taxes. I think a lot of people don't want to share because it's a complex topic, but I do think that we all should be more transparent of what we earn and for example, what we have to pay (taxes, healthcare, rent, food) and what you get isn't the same thing as what you earn at the end of the day. so thanks for this video, it gives a real view on what artists do (and that's not much of art haha, sadly). but a lot of organizing and managing, too.

    OMG Thank you Kelsey for this video!! You are amazing! I know it's probably not easy to make these videos as my guess is your dream youtube channel would be more about sharing your own art rather than handing tips for other artists starting on youtube but honestly this is such a gem of a video and it helps people like me think about what is achievable and what to strive for as an artist on youtube. THANK YOU!

    Very informational video, thank you so much! I know a lot of people don’t like talking about their income but you’re right, be the change you want to see,
    I used to make a lot of character/website design and I made about 2,500 at most, and 700 at the lowest(monthly it was really inconsistent income to rely on) lucky my parents helped me out when I didn’t make enough(I was only 18 at the time), decided to get a 9-5 job that pays really good but I’m quitting soon to do art again after saving a good amount of money(took only two years)

    • @KelseyRodriguez
      @KelseyRodriguez  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations!! That's a huge achievement. I feel you when it comes to inconsistent income, it's hard to budget and plan ahead when things can fluctuate so much. I'm brainstorming ideas for how I can generate a more stable income rn and things like Skillshare seem like a pretty good solution for this but I'm not 100% sure what I'd teach just yet.

    • @KelseyRodriguez
      @KelseyRodriguez  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My biggest struggle right now is time management, I'd say. I'm taking on more sponsors and posting more often on TH-cam and developing a skillshare class and working on launching my shop, so there are lots of hats I have to wear to get things done. That and waiting for my audience to get bigger and my income streams to grow as a result. I'm so so glad this was useful for you!

    • @megamaster0
      @megamaster0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KelseyRodriguez I really resonate with the struggle of wearing so many different hats. For me, producing TH-cam videos combines the most skills to produce that final product. You have to be good at art, video editing, speaking in a clear concise manner, and in my case producing some music to go along with it.

    Thank you. I often have questions that I have asked some of my favourite YT'ers but I never get answers. I hope you will answer me. So, my questions are in the area of how can I, a viewer, help a content creator regarding ads. Do I have to watch more than 35 sec of the ad for you to get money? Also, If I click on ads do you make more money? Also, is there anything else as a viewer I can do passively, without spending money as I don't have any wiggle room in my budget, that can help you the creator? Thanks.

    • @KelseyRodriguez
      @KelseyRodriguez  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions! Clicking on an ad definitely helps, I’m not sure if watching for a certain amount of time helps though. Using their affiliate links and discount codes if you purchase something also helps a lot as well. The best thing you can do to support creators without spending anything is to share their work (like their videos & art) with your friends and to become an active member of their community!

    9:33 can you make a video explaining how to get started to do this? I'd like to also make money through my video editing skills (i have a youtube channel in a different language thats going pretty well) but i have no idea where to start looking for people who are willing to pay for this service, and idk how to market my skills or how to word what im offering, etc. also if i get paid per hour, what happens if i'm slow at editing and it takes me several hours? what if the client says i took too long on purpose to get paid more? i have so many questions on this specific type of income...

    • @KelseyRodriguez
      @KelseyRodriguez  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I probably won't be making a video about this (I don't think it fits with my more art-based channel) but here's some info! I've gained ALL of my video editing clients through cold-emailing. Like just reaching out and being like, "hey, I've been watching your videos for a while and they're incredible, if you ever need a video editor, here's a sample of my work!". For every 5-7 emails I sent out to other art youtubers I gained a client. I didn't do any other kind of marketing.
      I charged $25 and then later $45 an hour, but you could always do a project-based fee per edit, like maybe $200 per edited video. I've never had anyone complain about the work, and if they treat you poorly, don't work with them again, it's not worth it. Clients that have higher budgets are almost always much easier to work with than other clients.
      DM me on IG if you have any other questions and I send you the specific emails I sent out!

    What's the process of freelance payments? i.e. getting video streams, not the editing, uploading and getting paid? I would work via gdrive or dropbox so they could upload the files, then I would do the editing and then upload to a private video on yt for them to check, once paid, then upload final video to them via gdrive/dropbox. Is it like that?

      I like to use Wetransfer for file transfer, which is a cheaper option than google drive and dropbox. I do the edit, upload an unlisted version for them to see, and then upload a final version and send them an invoice! I send invoices after the work is complete because my clients like for me to do the entire process, from editing to writing the description & designing a thumbnail. You could also do a per project fee clients pay upfront, whatever works as long as you have a contract and communicate!

    Are you making more videos about how to make money as an artist rather than more art? I´m asking.

    • @KelseyRodriguez

      No? I think my most recent video is a very good example of my dedication and commitment to improving my craft. Videos on advice & art business/income typically perform better than my studio vlogs, which is why I'm posting more of them at the moment, but scroll through the channel and you'll find plenty of painting processes and studio vlogs

    I can’t be the only one confused how she’s living off that money currently but then it could just be because I live in California 😅

      I mentioned in the first part of the video that I'm currently being supported by my partner, but if I moved out of NYC and back home to Minnesota where I went to college I'd be able to live off of this pretty easily, especially since my income is scaling pretty quickly. I've only been monetized for a few months so far :) Thanks for watching!
