So I'm here today because my wife found a coaster made in the shop of a dear friend of mine who's no longer with us. I never met him personally, and this song took on a whole new meaning shortly after the Black Eyed Dog took him. He was a kind man, a gentle soul. And I come here to this song from time to time when I think of him, to remind myself while I never met him, we were good mates, across the void of of the Internet.
gotta say buddy's unreal wether you like him or not.......hes gifted.....I mean I'm into Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton and Jimmy Paige but this guy tells a story just from the sound forget the lyrics........Oh I'm not comparing to them but he is gifted and noone will take that away from him.
You're correct; this song is a nod to Because it's There, and the left hand hammer technique that song made famous. Andy McKee is also never shy during performances to mention how much Hedges impacted him ^^
It gives me the impression of inner city madness as the swarm of people walk along the sidewalks uncaring and not noticing the person next to them. The friend I never met is the person right beside me. It has all the elements of continuity and the lack of intimacy people long for. I am always truly inspire by the innovative concepts Andy exploits, and the melodies that are so enticing. Thank you for posting videos so we can enjoy the contemporary styles you have become famous for Andy McKee
andy was deeply influenced by michael hedges. this song is called the friend i never met because andy never got the chance to meet him(pretty self explanatory title indeed), he had bought tickets for a michaels concert and was eager to behold michaels performance but sadly he passed away before the gig so andy wanted to write this beautiful piece as a good bye to mr hedges, therefore the resemblence with because its there
It reminds me a little bit of Bach and Handel, now that I think of it. Bach was eager to meet Handel and had lots of respect for him, but the meeting never occurred.
AlexTriceratops123 Bach influenced Michael Hedges, who influenced Andy Mckee :D. I think there are some recordings of Michael Hedges playing Bach on TH-cam!
I don't know if anyone else here listens to Thrice but this song sounds very very similar to the intro to Thrice's song "The Sky Is Falling" That song came out in 2008 and this video was released in 2009 o.O It could be that Andy McKee was inspired to make this song after hearing "The Sky Is Falling" OR it could just be a huge coincidence that they sound so alike O.O
this song is one of the most beautiful pieces of music written in my opinion. every time i listen to it and close my eyes i feel as if my soul escapes my body and moves with the notes and melody he plays. andy mckee, you are an amazing composer and an amazing musician.
Andy mckee my god man i started watching u back when u first started man u are by far one of the best guitar players i have ever seen IMO. U are blessed with an amazing skill man and i wish i could have even a fraction of ur skill man. Mad respect from canada eh!
I saw him play this live yesterday. It is just an incredibly piercing song. I don't know if it was the venue, his guitar or what but when he did the percussive part it felt like it stabbed right through my chest. He was able to capture Michael Hedges's style beautifully.
Just saw andy tonight. He mentioned that his song was inspired by Mike Hedges and thus a lot of the techniques in the song are similar to Hedges methods of playing for that purpose. Great live show...
@ShortManLS1 I do believe its called a Harp Guitar, at least thats what Andy called it at the show I went to last night. Micheal Hedges also was known for playing one, and this song is indeed dedicated to Hedges' playing style and life. I think others have already said that though.
That’s a great question. I would think that a long thumbnail would help to make those harmonics easier but I can’t really tell the length of his in this video
If everyone in the world listened to Andy Mckee at the same time....world peace would probably be achieved.

This helps me deal with the confusion and the worlds fast pace. Tells me to just stop and talk to the person next to me. He might be my friend.

This got 13 yr old me in my feels and it still gets 24 me there. This song is very sentimental to me. Love how much passion you put into this man!
I played one of those at Guitar Center in LA's vintage room. This beast is $12,000.
RIP Michael Hedges. This piece is such a wonderful tribute.
How beautiful.....
This song automatically sweeps my mind clear and gives me a calm feeling.
This song still takes me to a far away place in my mind. I think I hit the like button on this video more than a dozen years ago
this song would kill my left hand to no end.
Most people would die of too much awesome, were they half as good at something as Andy McKee is at his music.
Certifiable genius.

Ridiculously awesome.
this is far beyond magic...
i get shivers when he taps the guitar :D
I just recently saw this instrument for the first time. How awesome! It is sort of a designer lute/guitar. Ingenious for sure.
Guitar drums and bass-only andy McKee!
his left hand would get sore, surely! amazing piece
how could you dislike this?
i could fall asleep to this...its amazing
I've heard this song before but I never knew it was played on an instrument like this...
I'm in awe by how accurately you put that into words. Give yourself a pat on the back
... Un Artiste!!
Michael Hedges's "Because It's There" helps to understand better what exactly Andy did here. My bow to both men.
I think if Andy mckee and Pat Metheny jammed together we could travel back in time!!
oh andy. you never fail to inspire the shit out of me.
Wait, he's doing that in STANDARD TUNING!?! Mother of God....
This fills my heart with such joy. Thank you.
Saw him play this live once, he was touring with Don Ross at the time. So much talent in one room, I didn't even know what to do with myself.
This guy is a professional Chills giver.
In my opinion the best Michael Hedges tribute out there. I can hear Michael flowing through you, Andy!
Now that I've listened to Michael Hedges' album "Aerial Boundaries," the tribute to Hedges here is so clear, and so spot on.

I genuinely don't think it's overboard to call this genius.
His music, to me, always gives of an early square soft VGM vibe.
A true musician. A pleasure to behold. Thank you so much from Australia 💐👏
GREAT!!!!!!! JUST AMAZING!
If you close your eyes you can feel the presence of Michael Hedges
Thanks man.
And hell yeah he is!
The music that Andy Mckee plays is no doubt some of the most beautiful songs that I have ever listened to. Pure genius.

I LOVE the 5/4 section at 2:20! Incredible!
And you can do better? This is a masterpiece of music, you don't need to judge it.
Love the 5/4 part at 2:20!

Are you a writer?, you have amazing writing skills. That comment was brilliant. I thank Andy Mckee and you too.

Very nice cover... 2TU :D

This gives me a really good new age feeling.

exquisite piece..
How the hell does he do the tap harmonics so effortlessly?
That’s a great question. I would think that a long thumbnail would help to make those harmonics easier but I can’t really tell the length of his in this video
Quien invento ese instrumento? fue Andy? Que looocoo
Michael Hedges would be proud of where Andy has taken the instrument.
A master.
nossa que lindo ver esse rapaz tocando fantastico 100palavras.....
Keep in mind that McKee has his guitars crafted to specification by luthiers.
Aha. That answers my question.
dude you rule
@josh307c it's a harp guitar. This song kind of sounds like "Because it's there" by Michael Hedges, for whom this song is written
Forever alone . . . . . .
I'd love to hear 2:19-2:50 as a loop.
Well, isn't this amazing!
Super sayan guitar!
