man, watching you do yhe truss rod groove was just painful. I actually cried. I like your channel and seeing what ways to do things and not to do things
Damn man i hate when your videos end.....you are a very good woodworker/instructor and very inspiring....i just got a telecaster body and really wanted to try and build my own neck for it great vid!
@@elsenorx·hace.10.años from what I’ve seen fender does one pieces necks with maple fretboards but other companies glue a maple fretboard on a maple neck.
For the 12th fret only, couldn't you still draw x's but instead of going side to side go side to centerline? That way the dots would be centered between the edges and the centerline?
what type of truss rod? was reading stewmwc site their hot rods are for a 2 piece neck. I want to do a one piece and is the channel flat? just want to verify. You make neck building seem easy its answered alot of questions as far as whats next in the process tanks again.
Great video, I'm a beginner and want to try this. I have a few questions though. is that a double action truss rod? you only have to anchor it on one side right? could you have the adjusting part protrude at the headstock end? Could you send a link of where you would buy a truss rod like that. Also, where do you get your templates?
Hi Big D, So it must be OK to put a dual action truss rod into a single piece neck and it won't push the skunk strip out? Great channel you have , Thanks.
Slightly advanced question here, but did you route the truss rod channel the full length of the rod? If so, what keeps the truss rod from pushing the skunk stripe out of the slot? Do you just trust the glue to hold? I'd like to make some one piece necks but with superior double-action truss rods, so I don't have to tinker with curved rod channels and angled access holes... but the rod popping out of the channel is my main concern.
Joey Zahariuk Thanks for the insight! I’m actually working on skipping the skunk stripe altogether. Building a machine to drill the length of the neck for insertion of the truss rod, using a self centering gundrill bit.

Hi, are you using a hex ended truss rod? I bought one of the low profile truss rods from StewMac and was not sure if it would work having the adjustment at the heel. I thought it would need to be at the head stock. Thanks!
Just a very basic question, when you take the sanders to the headstock I noticed that you weren't sanding with the grain. Just curious about why? In my EXTREMELY limited experience I thought you were always supposed to sand with the grain
@@bigdguitars but how do u know where to start the nut on the neck? I didn't notice any center lines or fret lines on the strat template. It seems like when u go to transfer the fret markings to the neck, you have no reference for where to line up the nut on the ruler....
You could have stopped the truss rod channel 1/2" away from the heel and drilled the counterbore so it looked factory. That's how I install hotrod truss rods, give it a shot buds it's not hard to do. Plus then it looks way more professional!
i know Im asking randomly but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Princeton Joshua thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
This is done terribly. You said strat neck but strat necks use curved truss rod channels as well as skunk stripes they also only use single action truss rods and they don't route all the way for the channel. They drill 3 degrees on both ends and they hold the truss rod in at an angle. This video is a just a sign of laziness maybe you should actually try making a neck worth using.
man so passionate about single action truss rods. double action rods are great and no need to drill at an angle using the better rod. I wouldn't say "lazy" , it's just different than you like to see.
This guy is doing this with limited hand tools showing that it can be done at home with limited tools. The truss rod he uses is standard in today's necks and like others said doesn't need to be angled.
I love the way you're treating that other neck as a clamp holder at 18:15!
man, watching you do yhe truss rod groove was just painful. I actually cried. I like your channel and seeing what ways to do things and not to do things

Amazing stuff. Thanks very much for posting this.
Ive seen many of your videos. I am very impressed, and I am happy to say I am subscribed.
+walmars3curity thank you
Thank you for this! I have wanted to do a one piece neck with a modern truss rod!
Another great series...Thanks BigD.
Oh man! A fret ruler?! I hope the genius who made that is rich. He deserves it haha.
Awesome video! I've had trouble finding other examples of one piece neck construction.
You are right, they all seem to do a two pieces neck. Do you know if Fender or a y famous guitar brand do two pieces or it it all one piece?

Great video, good to see your bench as tidy as mine..... he-he
Is it a good idea to put some forward bow, meaning towards the strings and then do the radius????? Does it Matter???
Thank you!
Hey D - you rock! Great vid man thanks or sharing
Crossing the lines for the fret markers you don't hand to make two lines. One line is quite enough to have crosspoint when you have the center line.
This is interesting to watch, the grain looks good...
For the 12th fret only, couldn't you still draw x's but instead of going side to side go side to centerline? That way the dots would be centered between the edges and the centerline?

Is there a benefit to using an end mill bit on the router vs. just doing it on the drill press?
Great video, I'm a beginner and want to try this.
I have a few questions though.

could you have the adjusting part protrude at the headstock end?
Could you send a link of where you would buy a truss rod like that.
Also, where do you get your templates?
When you stick the templates on do you just use double sided stick tape? That's what it looked like in the videos?
Great videos series and thank you.How deep should be the truss rod channel?
+Alvin s depends on the truss rod and how it would be set. you need at least 1/8 wood or the truss rod will pop out.
Yikes...I broke out a chunk of wood where the nut is supposed to go...can I rebuild that area and save the neck?
Hi Big D,
So it must be OK to put a dual action truss rod into a single piece neck and it won't push the skunk strip out?
Great channel you have , Thanks.
you can put whatever you want in whatever you want, there are no rules despite what the cork sniffers tell you.
Thank you
What type band saw is that. Looks more like a mjll. Makes cutting easy. Pkease let me know
Hi. Thanks for the video. Do you put the truss rod in with the metal plate facing the frets or the skunk stripe?
13:39 contour gauge. not feeler gauge.
i was wondering about the truss rod cavity i thought the depth was angled or curved, is that not true?
Slightly advanced question here, but did you route the truss rod channel the full length of the rod? If so, what keeps the truss rod from pushing the skunk stripe out of the slot? Do you just trust the glue to hold?

The glue joint is stronger then the wood itself

what kind of saw blade are you using in the skrill saw?
Does the truss rod channel not have to be bowed/curved? Can it really just be flat like that?
Hello! When gluing the walnut strip on the back, what exactly are we gluing to? The truss rod? Or the maple side?
Do you think quartersawn is required?

I just finished it. The only question I have is how thick is your initial blank?
Daniel Davis about an inch
Hi ,May i ask what is the power of your bandsaw.Thanks.
Hey big D. Great vids.
What abt doin the authentic skunk plug in the headstk. How would u do that?
I thought that you would just drill that out and plug it from one of the ends. I don't need it on the two way truss rod.
You cut the frets right into the neck and do not use separate fingerboard stock?
TMBridge this is a one piece
@@bigdguitars I see. Would recommend a one piece or a two piece for a first-time guitar builder (but experienced woodworker)

How much wood size for 1 neck?
Hi can i ask what's the exact depth of the truss rod slot? thanks
It wouldn't have crossed my mind to do so much drill press work to make things easier for my router.
How deep is the truss rod channel?
How do you know where to line up the ruler for the frets? How do you know right where the nut is at?

How do you adjust the truss rod without the top channel?
Do you ever use a bandsaw for cutting fret slots?

install a magnet into your straight edge to hold fret saw verticle

may you tell me from where you got your trussrod or which kind of brand it is?

what's parameter or measures you take in care to place it the Truss Rod?
this neck is left handed?
Its a reverse head stock he mentions that
Is this Dan Gheesling's guitar channel?
how deep did you route the trussrod channel?
only as deep as it needs to be maybe a hair deeper.
How it is called the tool used to measure the profile of the neck? minute 14
Hello Dionisio. He calls it a "feeler gauge." I've never heard it called that before, it's a Contour Gauge.
11:30 why not use a chisel? less risk of damaging the fretboard.
Hy what is the name of the tool u use in 7:10
Thank for man,,
