Building the Revell 1/32 Scale F-16 Fighting Falcon Fighter Jet model 1996 vs. 2016

- This video was originally intended to be a model building, painting, weathering, and comparison of the same F-16 model kit I newly constructed in 2016 vs. one I built in 1996. During the new construction, I became frustrated with the seam line created with the upper and lower fuselage sections. In disgust, I threw the model down and it broke into about 7 parts. This video also now includes my attempt to repair and salvage this model.
For a direct comparison, I did not use any aftermarket items such as detailed cockpits, landing gear bays, etc. However, I did cannibalize a Hasegawa 1/32 scale F-16A/C vertical tail to make the 2016 build more accurate as an F-16A.

I had a similar frustrating experience with A F-14 Tomcat 20 or so yrs ago. Instead of breaking into little tiny pieces I took the afterburners out and replaced them with "C" rocket engines and launched the bastard....still broke into little tiny pieces, but much more satisfying.

There is always that one model that becomes the model from hell. But you pushed through! And the improvement from 2016 to now is jaw dropping.

Wow, 1996 is a very special year for me coz that is when I was born. It is surprising that your rebuild the model you built before. Also I am trying to build a 1/48 F-16 with have glass paint. I love the metalic reflection of the paint under the sun. I know you are an expert of F-16, so I decide to go through all of your F-16 videos to "steal" some of your skills.😊

my dad had found the kit from 1984 while looking through some old boxes in storage he had no clue that it was in there and remembered buying it when he was 20 years old back in 1985 to our surprise no warped plastic or yellowed decals ill be building this kit soon!

After building a 1/32 Revel F-14 I came up with a saying: "life is too short to waste on bad kits." I realized how much time I wasted to make the kit look decent in accuracy. It would have been cheaper to save up for a proper modern kit that is actually enjoyable to build.
I was there working the transit line when the AZ guard visited Hickam AFB in 1994-95
I enjoy your other vids so I went back and watched this one when you said it was the most disliked. Actually, it’s pretty cool of you to admit to chucking the thing on the floor. You coulda just said you dropped it. But instead it ended up being a learning and teaching moment. Nobody’s perfect but with time and patience you can patch things up. Love it!

Hi , just came across this video. I'm building the same kit but with updated parts for the PW afterburner segments. I have a razor saw so I might cut my canopy to expose the cockpit. The only thing I'm doing different is adding the frame behind the canopy cut to show in open position. I'm making a Misawa jet. I'm also going to try that walkway line painting you did as well.

So With the Highlighting phase. You want to have already laid the primer color? How do you know what color to use? I'm about to begin work on a Hawker Hunter FGA 9 (RAF Version) do I pre-shade ALL Of the panel lines?
I start with the pre-shading using flat black without any paint applied to the model. In this case, I had already done the pre-shading and laid down the exterior colors over them when I broke the model. So I started again as if I hadn't done any painting at all. I do all the panel lines. You can always paint over them if the look isn't what you're looking for overall.
I think this was a rebox of a Hasegawa kit, what is interesting is the improvement of your modelling skills over time - good job.

for seams i use a sprue glue made using small parts of the sprue spares mixed together with some of that tamiya ultra thin glue

Thier is some stuff called Zap A Gap. Just in case you ever find yourself needing to fill in space or having issues with seams.
LOL I hear ya, I have lost track at how many kits ( aircraft, armor, ships, figures !, HO Trains) I have "Thrown" down during my 50 yrs of the Hobby !! Lol.
Thankfully most 20+ years ago ? Ahh The early years of super glues and brass etched detail parts !! Lol Before I got many different tools, holders & clamps for them.

Should you ever want to, the Tamiya F-16c is a beautiful kit, loaded with lots more detail than the Revell kits.

Hello from ROMANIA! I want to know what colours are used to paint this model cause I have a model F -16 Italeri model kit but I don't know what colours are used to paint this model. In what colours are usualy F-16 are painted?
Hi Bogdan Amarioarei, during my F-16 service there always seemed to be slight variations in the gray colors used. It's mainly a dark gray and a sky gray making it a two tone paint scheme.
ax... just a small advice, which may help you a lot to avoid frustration... whenever I had to putty be it on the model or in real life?, I always taped surrounding areas living only about 1/8 of an inch around a hole or a crack... it will save you time sanding and will not cause you any nervous break downs...:-))))) and God knows I have had plenty of mine...:-)))) enjoy a hobby as it was supposed to be, build it!... and they will come... Good luck in the future...

I have it too. Be careful with the angle of horizontal stabilizers! For Revell one it is not correct. Tamiya F-16 kits have a good one.

1996 model -- cleaned up and presented to the museum because the mentality is, it MUST be presented to public in pristine condition!
2016 reality -- this bird has been to war and shows it!
Yeah, I've seen pictures of F-16s that have that amount of wear on them. Especially as they're getting closer to the end of their service lives!
Most if not all A-models of the F-16 should be retired within the next 10-15 years in the West. We don't even fly A-models in the US anymore. They're all Block (20?) or later C-models (and D-model trainers) but the bulk of the USAF/ANG wings are Block 40/50 planes with dwindling numbers of the earlier build F-16Cs. They have quite a few planes that are over 30years old now. At least they're holding up better than the F-18s! The US Navy just retired all A-D model F-18s from frontline service because A) the planes will not take the punishments of carrier landings anymore and B) the USMC needs more Hornets because they don't have enough operational planes and spares to do their missions! The USN still has F-18A-D models for training and experiments but only Super Hornets are going to sea on supercarriers from this year onward.

ironic as there is a decal on the radome nose which says 'do not paint', what did you do?
Haha! Actually, on real F-16s the coating on the radome is grey and feels like rubber. They are all labeled "Do Not Paint".

Im not expert but i will try restored a Mirage Dassault Revell 1/32
I used Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. However, I would recommend the normal Tamiya plastic cement for repair work.
Around 23:53 -- When you talk about chipping, that brought something to mind.
A good chunk of the reason why the F-22s and B-2s don't get flown that often (besides the sheer aviation fuel cost) is the amount of extra maintenance they have to do on those planes to maintain the "stealth" coatings on those plane.
If the damage on the surface of the plane gets appreciable, the radar return (RCS signature) gets a lot higher. The problem is you can't maintain the surfaces of those planes with normal equipment because allegedly the chemicals used in those coatings are extremely toxic. They have to recoat the planes in hangars that are closed and it's a non-human operation. They had to automate the equipment to do coating for the B-2s because they couldn't have people doing that maintenance. Also, the tolerances for recoating the surface are higher because it has to be just right to keep the RCS down.
Now, as I've read on the F-16 (PUBLICLY AVAILABLE SOURCES, NOTHING TOP SECRET LEAKED!) they DID two things on later production F-16Cs (Block 40 and later; I don't think it was retrofitted to most earlier F-16s unless they went through mid-life upgrades that brought up to at least Block 30 avionic standards; the USAF standard later-build F-16As to Block 15 standard and upgraded some to ADF config to fire BVR missiles) to reduce RCS. They added a thin gold layer to the canopies to reduce the RCS return from there because it was a huge source of radar reflection from the F-16. The radar beam would just bounce off from all over the cockpit including the pilot's helmet! The gold layer (non-conductive?) also had a benefit of reducing solar glare for the pilot. The other RCS reduction (also applied to active-duty and ANG F-15Cs) was paint that had chemical additives that reduced radar return. Exactly how this was accomplished, I don't know but it was supposed to have reduced the radar return which the F-15 particularly needed because it as anti-stealth a design as you can imagine!!! I think only the F-14 had a higher radar signature among American Fourth Generation Fighters.
RCS return has nothing to do with size, btw. It's also about shaping of the airframe and reflection from the material the aircraft is made of and how much of the engine the radar scanning the fighter can see. The later generation F-18E/F has a lower RCS return the F-18A-D models and it's at least 25% bigger than the first four production model F-18s! They incorporated radar absorbent material in the F-18 Super Hornet and also redid the engine inlet. Ironically, the F-18E/F inlet looks more like the F-14's inlet design from the outside!

How long did it take you to glue all of those broken parts of the fuselage back together and have it ready for paint?
The F-16 Fighting Falcon happens to be one of my favourite military aircraft along with the F-14A Tomcat and the F-4E Phantom II. I did build a 1/32 F-14A Tomcat around 25 years ago with the movable wings, and I cannot remember what happened to that plane……lol
I am currently building the 1/32 Tamiya F-4E Phantom II, and I do think that it will be a beast when finished.
My next plane will be Tamiya’s flagship 1/32 F-16CJ Block 50 Fighting Falcon. I have watched a number of build videos on this kit and I am very impressed with the detail on this plane.
I live in Australia and was real keen a number of years ago when the Australian Government ordered their new fighters as they were tossing up between the F-16 Falcon and the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The Super Hornet won……Grrr
Once they started to take delivery of the F/A-18’s they started retiring the old F-111’s.
Now we also have the F-35A Lightning II’s in our Air Force.
Hi Gary, thanks! It was coming out nicely until I destroyed it 😏. I don't remember how long it took to put humpty-dumpty back together again as it were, but it should not have come to that. I look to that "incident" when I need to simmer down if my frustration level begins to rise.
I think most 1/32 scale models are very nicely detailed, but whew, to find space when they're done 😮.

My camera is an older SONY HDR-CX190 5.3 megapixel Handycam mounted on a cheap Targus (TG-5060TR) collapsible tripod.

Mostly I have the tripod and camera sitting on a dining room chair next to me to get that over-the-shoulder effect.

One last question... is there an App or program you're using to do the "FAST MOTION" action i.e. When U R A/B'ing ect? & to insert the "Talking Track" ( I'm guessing it may be a Movie Making type app or program)

I use SONY Movie Studio Platinum 13. My current version is not a great software program, but it does allow me to speed up things/slow down/ add text/pan and crop/have multiple video or audio tracks overlaid on each other at the same time. It just takes some practice to get used to the features. I use a left over Turtle Beach headset and microphone from my COD gaming days to dub in my narration.

When I air brush with acrylic the paint when touched the paint will come off why is that and how can I prevent it from happening.
Which acrylics are you using and how long are you letting it cure on the model surface? If you're doing other paint work on top of your 1st coat using acrylic it can reactivate the older layer and come off. You can spray a clear coat over the initial paint to seal and protect it if you're adding more layers.
William Phipps if you are holding your airbrush to far away from the surface with a really thin pain it will dry before it hits the model and rub off easy like powder that smudges when you touch it. Try backing off the air pressure on the airbrush as well, dialed up pressure makes drying before surface contact worse. With any luck You should be able to bring the brush in closer and get a nicer wet application that should flash off and stick to the surface better. Make sure you are only thinning (acrylic) 50/50 paint to thinner.

I haven't seen an F-16 model kit bigger than 1/32 scale. There are nicely detailed collectible toys that come complete at 1/18 scale.
That airframe is pretty much limited to +4g and -2g. Better send it to AMARC.

Yes, this model was done in Tamiya acrylics except for the silver portions which was Testors silver enamel.

they leave jets with chromate exposed without corrosion control?????
Hi John, the chromate is the anti-corrosion paint. Sometimes it would get exposed when the grey paint chipped off. In later years they began applying a Teflon strip along the leading edges on the wings and other flight surfaces to combat the chipping. It actually was very effective.

Agreed. I like your idea of the preshading, but the body color needed to cover up more of the panel lines you shaded. It's too grid-like, and I feel if the panel lines were made even more faint, it would look even better.

Yep, I was given a stack of models by my therapist. it works pretty well and allows me to focus instead of getting mad.

After viewing this, I want to make a model of 79-0385 (aviation-safety.net/wikibase/46761, www.f-16.net/aircraft-database/F-16/airframe-profile/565/). I remember someone running into the Engine Tracking office (I was a Jet Powerplant Technician from '84-'87 at MacDill AFB) and requesting all the documentation on the engine that was installed in the aircraft. I also remember seeing the aircraft in the grass about 100 ft from the road to the main gate.

Revell kits are know for there bad fit and finish.
This is the reason i dont wanna buy Revell anymore the pieces dont fit good, most revell monogram even today pieces are warped, some clear parts are miss sized and big seam steps where you join 2 pieces together also due to warped parts.
Hi Spooky Ryder, I was a big Revell fan when I was a kid, maybe because I didn't know better. I didn't care too much for the quality of their 747 model I used for my mainly unwatched Austin Powers conversion video. A recent kit with new tooling of theirs is off the mark as I have discovered. 🙄
Did you roll over this with a mac truck? That was in horrible shape. I would have bought a whole new model instead.
