I love that Cabral's dogs seem more trained than "broken". They don't simply freeze until he tells them to do something. Sometimes they don't obey. Sometimes they jump up. But they are clearly well-trained dogs. I have a lab mix puppy and I love these videos!

This is the exact technique I used with my dog years ago with all doors. Works perfectly, great demonstration Robert

THANK YOU for this! My 60 lb Great Pyrenees therapy dog JUST jumped out our suv window recently because I did not foresee he would. The highway was about 10 feet away. Gratefully, I had his long line on him and was able to restrain him until I could crawl thru the car and open the passenger door to get to him. I had NO IDEA he would consider jumping out the window due to his size and was grateful for that long line. Now I know from this video how to train him. Too bad I do not have a remote for my window but will do this with the door. I did this for crate training but never thought to do it with the car.

Thank you thank you for reminding everyone that their dogs need to be securely restrained. Buying a crash tested safety harness is much much better than having injuries or worse.

I just got 1 yr old GSD. He came from a rescue and was owner surrender. The owner had to move out of state and was unable to take him. I have had him for 4 days and it seems to be going good. I hand feed him 2 twice daily and then feed him in a bowl twice. We walk 3 times daily, with a short luring session before and after. Always ending on a positive. My question is how will I know when I should start training with corrections. I know with shepherds it begins with trust. I don't want to be too hard or to soft. Just join your membership, love that I can watch the videos over and over. Always learning and always training.

In my suv I had a cargo barrier installed behind the front seats and this worked really well I had friend who were boned by a driver running a red light the impact rolled their car and their two German shepherds were un injured even though my friend was badly hurt it caused her to go into premature labour having her babie three months early and it was months before they knew she would be ok if their two forty kilo gram dogs had been unrestrained it could have been killed or their dogs might have been thrown from the car as the windows shattered so having that barrier in place and securely anchored saved them all from major injury

For a real world example, we had a family friend who had a small maltese, it was a lap dog and she didn't train it as people tend to do with these types of dogs. She took it into town and stopped a gas station, when she opened the rear door to get a bag he ran out of the car straight under the wheels of another car that was parking killing him.
If you love your dog this is why this kind of training is important it has real life and death consequences for your dog, this is not something to be sloppy about because no one wants to see their loved pet being crushed to death it's a horrible experience.

Great video and perfect timing! I have a service dog who anticipates that when we arrive somewhere other than home that she is going to go to work. However, I need her to wait longer in the car because I don't like her wearing her service vest when it's summer because I think it's just that much hotter for her getting into the car in these California Summers. I'm going to go outside right now and work on this Behavior. It also reminds me that I should make her wait when we arrive back home because what I have been doing is pulling into our driveway, opening the door and telling her to go to the front door what she will always do, but she doesn't have to wait to get out and I should probably reinforce that both on arrival to a store for example, as well as a rival at home! Once again thank you thank you!

Hi Robert. I think the GOOD LORD directed me to THIS PARTICULAR VIDEO. I was DESPERATE with my 15 month Newfoundland. I was NEVER able to stop her from jumping outta the car and running away. She always has her leash in order to grab her. My hubby was unable to bring my hefty 56kilo Newfie to a halt. She dragged him a couple of meters before she stopped. I sit with her in the rear seat, she is kinda calm but hardly sits or in a down position. she has her seat belt. I have been trying slamming the door in her face but as soon as the door is opened she jumps out and my hubby has to be ready to grab her. She doesn't jump outta the car when she's tired. After watching your video I realized that i dont train her in our parking to begin with 🥺 but near the lake where we (Newfoundland Club) train our hysterical dogs. Her idea is to join the others in the water and she jumps outta the car. This has been my vital problem a danger to herself. My previous Newfoundland who lived up to 15 years, NEVER was over excited but a calm gentle bear. Your video is gonna help me educate my TSUNAMI urgently. My tummy gets "knotted" 😟😳when I have to take her for training or simply to take her to a park. Bless you Robert for your help. Wish you were in France. Thanks a million for sharing and caring. Hugs 👍👍👍👍💕💕

I am really against people getting a dog they cannot physically restrain, training is great but you should always get a dog the size and weight that you can physically control as there will always be situations where you may not be able to control your dog with commands alone such as if your dog gets attacked or antagonized in which case all training is going out the window for the most part.

Loved this one. So many people would not think of the door in face trick. Thanks!
What's the trick for the back (trunk)? Do I first teach in the back seat so he knows "WAIT"?
    thanks!

I opened up the back hatch on a stupid major commercial road, to water them. OMGoodness! My big boy jumped out even restrained! I bodily BODILY glomped onto him. He is over 100 pounds major drive, and there was no way I would NOT be a part of him! I managed to physically get him back our other dog was in a kennel. But I wrecked back muscles to ensure HE was going to get back in that car!!
We are working hard on getting these boys controlled so they never ever get loose in mind boggling horrid traffic!! Double and redundant features until we are able to control their drive. I would not survive.
If they didn't survive. Redundancy, they are on a lease in a kennel or blocked from jumping out.

Dear Robert, please help me out! I will be bringing home a puppy very soon and there's one aspect about crate training I still don't fully understand. In Europe, most people don't crate their dogs and the breeder I chose doesn't either. I really want to crate train my puppy from day 1 but since he won't be used to the crate I don't quite understand how I should "handle" the night: Do I put him in the crate even though he is not used to it? Depending on when I pick him up during the day I will only have a couple of hours to show him that his crate is a happy, cozy place. I am unsure whether putting him in the crate at night and locking it (for a short period of time until I have to take him out to go potty and then put him back in the crate) will stress him out and, therefore, make him not like the crate. How should I handle the first few nights crate-wise? Also, in the beginning do I feed him his full meals in the crate or only use treats in the crate and feed him outside? Thank you so much for your reply!

Robert, do you really think treat/food rewards are the best option. What if the dog is smart enough to figure out when there is no treat around and refuses to do what it normally would while there is a treat present. People are telling me treat training is the worst thing I can do for my puppy. Please help!
