You could always go fast in Sonic Utopia, you just had to build up enough momentum. This just makes the level design completely redundant. It's fine as it was originally, apart from the fact that there aren't any other levels, or any reason to explore the map beyond taking the easiest path to goal (except for the intrinsic fun of going on loops and stuff).

Honestly this looks too fast to control. They did a pretty good job designing the level for his speed, at least the first half. Don’t get me wrong I like me some fast Hedgehogs but this may be too much.
I mean I don't think it would be to much if the level was better designed for it like you said the first half was but thatvwas because there was not a whooe lot of obstacles or at least obstacles that were better suited to the speed oh and sonic gt goes close to these speeds and it just proves my point further

These kinds of mods and physics never really intrested me. I feel like all the fun is sucked out of playing if you can just jump and fly over half the level and avoid its obstacles.
It’s fun as just a sandbox, but something like sonic utopia could never work as an actual official game.
The speed mod I get, but why not sonic utopia itself? I mean, Sonic Robo Blast 2 is already a thing that exists, this would just be like that but a little more open.

This kind of shows off the idea that I've always had of an open world kind of Sonic game where there's a progression of speed. I don't know what the reason would be, I don't know maybe Sonic's going to get better shoes or something but just come up with something creative it doesn't matter...
Anyway, basically as you progress through the game you can upgrade Sonic speed, acceleration, control. Level progression can be based on skillfully navigating levels, defeating challenges, but also needing enough speed to get past certain obstacles
Maybe it could be collecting chaos emeralds each you makes you faster or gives you more control etc
Or maybe it could be like in the show where there are power rings that you only get by beating a boss or maybe exploring a bit, so many options

Looks really fun its interesting that some segments require you to skillfully stay on track maybe a quick strafe/move left or right move would help with positioning when your running fast

I really enjoy the showcase and it really gives off utopian vibes, but I think a few changes can be made to make the fan-game more enjoyable. One: lower jump height overall. The jump height is too tall for most of the elements in the map and can slow the experience down somewhat since Sonic spends lots of time in the air due to the slow gravity acceleration. Two: add air resistance for Sonic when he's going at high speeds in the air. I don't enjoy it much when Sonic can jump across much of the level, skipping what he is actually designed for, which is running at high speeds on the ground and not flying in the air. Three: some visual for homing attack on enemies. Doesn't have to be something completely fancy, but a small indicator with a sound would be beneficial. Thank you, reader.

You know this is just a mod right? The designers of the original demo really put thought into the game design and didn't make Sonic so OP. The homing attack icon would be nice in some cases, but the natural vibe is kept pretty well without an icon popping up.
A couple of things.
Would’ve been neat if the Sonic Boom theme played instead to match the speed.

This is what I think everyone always wanted . An open world sonic game where you actually run fast af , add cool acrobatics like Miles Spider-Man , and upgrade sonic with leveling up. Something like Infamous 2. Of course with a new chao garden. One can only dream . :,(
Just going fast isn't all that interesting in and of itself, the original sonic utopia is really fun to play because of its momentum-based mechanics.

Btw I am convinced your homing attack lock on range is directly tied to your speed in this game, like when I am running at full speed with this mod I am able to lock onto badniks from several feet away but not when I'm going slower
Also here's hoping the creator makes this demo into a full game and doesn't get abandoned like so many promising Sonic fan game projects

Thinking about it, an open-world sonic game would be so cool.
Why has nobody else thought to put a little warbling sound over sonic's running so that sounds like a futuristic engine? It sounds so much better than the sped up footstep sounds they have in the main games like generations.
The point of this fangame is to be a momentum based plantformer, you gain momentum and you go fast, by already going fast without doing nothing, it's boring.
I was looking for this comment and your so right, this entire mod is about earning your speed and figuring your way across a level. This video might aswell be named “sonic but utopia but instead of earning my speed I cheat it all in instead”
