Nice preview. Couple of questions about the water for people who know the course… 1. Does it get choppy or is it fairly protected? 2. I assume we’re fighting current at some point depending on the tide? 3. Race site says average water temp is 68 - how wide does that swing year to year? Starting to visualize the race!!!
thanks for switching to YT - we get notifications that we monitor here whereas Facey can be too noisey 1. Nicely protected due to the enclosed nature of swim (high winds can change that but unusual to happen) 2. Our athletes said no currents were not that strong but slightly harder work stretch between 0.7 - 1.5 3. Hard to answer this as only have feedback from the race days - spoiler alert - expect a wetsuit swim ;-)
Like @coachstevemoody mentioned, our athletes have yet to encounter rough water in Kalmar. I would fully expect a swift swim as long as you can sight well. No currents to report on our end, either. I would fully expect a wetsuit swim in the Baltic! All the best and please let us know if you have any more Qs. Kalmar is truly a stunning venue. Enjoy!
Great video! Watching this the day after Ironman Kalmar 2024, but wanna share something for coming years when people watch this. The jellyfishes here are completely harmless, they do not sting. Im a local from Kalmar.
I did Ironman Kalmar in 2023 and there were no people holding back the swimmers and letting them in 4 in a time. It was as many as wanted to who jumped in and unfortunately led to absolutely overcrowding of swimmers in my pace
@@CoachSteveMoody otherwise it was a fantastic event and i am signing up again for 2025. But yeah, I was also shocked that they just let everybody jump in without controlling it. I was in the group for 1:30 so maybe they gave up towards the end.
It must have - as just rechecked the athlete guide for 2024 and it definitely confirms a rolling start per my video - from P34 Athletes are sent off in one continuous line for the swim start. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get the entire field across the swim start line. Each athlete's race will start when they cross the swim start timing mat, under the swim start arch. The swim line up will be divided into starting zones based on the athletes predicted swim time for the 3,86km course: * 50 minutes * 1 hour * 1 hour 10 minutes * 1 hour 20 minutes * 1 hour 30 minutes * 1 hour 45 minutes * 2 hours * 2 hours 20 minutes Athletes will be directed to self-seed on race morning based on their predicted swim time. Volunteers and staff will be in the lineup area with signs and will assist with this process. Self-seeding will not be mandatory but will be encouraged. The timing chip will register each athlete’s start time when they cross the timing mat at the swim entry ramp. Athletes will enter the water 7-8 athletes at a time, every 4 seconds, through an access point controlled by volunteers. An athlete’s race-time will start when they cross timing mats just before entering the water. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get the entire field across the swim start line
Doh and that is why you should subscribe/set up notifications- plan to a do a lot more of these reviews so will help you pick the next race! How you get on in Kalmar?
awesome detail as usual - love the fact you are bringing in other coaches now too
Yeah and have more great guys lined up - excited about the partnership

Nudity are not allowed (DSQ), but there are secluded areas behind the benches in TZ, where you can change nude without being seen.
Agree as definitely in the rules but let’s just say the Swedes are not as rigid in enforcement as other nations 😉

Interesting - it is now the norm for a rolling swim start

@@CoachSteveMoody Hans down Kalmar is the best place to become an Ironman. It went really well for me
Definitely sounds like a race to do! Glad you had a great race experience
