  • Follow Amtrak once around the basement layout . Big BNSF and the dueling Empire Builders. All Z SCALE. I started this layout in 2010, sadly, this is the last video of this layout. Shortly after filming the layout was dismantled . The Good News , the new layout is under construction . I set in the first sections of track on Thanksgiving , 2019 . Watch me build this new pike. First train run ? still to be determined . Watch for more, should take years . I would like to have one main line complete by spring 2010.

    This is awesome! Building large inclines and mountains like that must have been so difficult. Thank you for sharing your amazing creation with us!

    This is an engineering masterpiece. I came late to model railroading in 1999 and built many modules to take the Golden~Blackhawk & Central City around the country to train shows ,,,helped along by many friends. Seeing how wonderfully smooth and controlled your train sets run is a pleasure to watch. Bolting together and unbolting the modules for 64 shows during 18 years on the road did not translate to a perfectly function railroad. Yours is a dream to watch. Thanks for showing this. Cordially, Mister Dave

    The Z scale product line is quite impressive. I remember Model Railroader magazine's Z project back in the late 1980s, they did all of their American muscle with Marklin made F units...

    Wonderful to watch, thank you. I'm impressed with how smooth everything runs. I lost interest in trains, mine were always herky-jerky no matter how much I cleaned track and wheels or how many feeders I added.

    • @rroadron7970
      @rroadron7970  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You. Z scale does require frequent track cleaning. I have to clean it about every 2 weeks or about 8 hours of running.

    • @tommurphy4307
      @tommurphy4307 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its all in the oil. we have a smaller Z-scale layout at our club and the bottom line is nobody wants to maintain the track. so its just a display now. the Z scale guys swapped dummies in there so nothing expensive would 'roll away'....

    • @tommurphy4307
      @tommurphy4307 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      adding feeders won't help that problem- the rails are either hot or dead. we use conducting lubricant on our Z layout (when we want to run it which is usually when there are non-club members present)

    Yeah looking forward to doing my next Z layout, and like you have discovered, it looks so much better with sweeping curves rather than "as tight as it can take". I also did a lot of work with the marklin switches on the last couple of layouts, found out how much they will take with ballast, painting the rails, etc, Found out that you pretty much have to solder in extra jump wires so you don't get shorts on them, and that its a good trick to get some 600 or 400 grit wet and dry sand paper and use it under the working part of the switch (and don't ballast near that area) so it still looks good but doesn't get fouled up in any way.
    Really like your layout, nice job.

      @rroadron7970  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You for the comments. I give a tremendous amount of credit to the Marklin turnouts for the smooth operation of the trains. I have used all the different available tracks but my go to is Peco SL200. Check out my newest layout recently completed after 4 years. This video is just a small clip. My Largest layout yet, the entire thing is the Tehachapi Pass. Currently filming a complete layout video. th-cam.com/video/0eaINKefCMU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6B4YLC5aIAKnqsmC

      one of the great things about the finer scales is the seriously broad curves you can create in much less space than HO or S. O gauge is humongous in comparison.

      we don't use sound in our club room- we usually play music or some of the guys like to watch TV. i like the tube, too, but i like to mute the TV and play jazz. when there are visitors, some of the guys like to show off their sound.

    Really cool. I had no idea Z scale had advanced so much. Can you get DCC sound in these models yet? Do they make a speaker small enough to fit in these Z scale locomotives?

    • @rroadron7970
      @rroadron7970  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw a video of a challenger with sound from azl 2011 national show. About 25 years ago we laughed at the idea of sound in N scale.

    • @Mini-Club-Center-Siegen
      @Mini-Club-Center-Siegen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don´t know if they have it for US models, but for German models you can get speaker. Steam locos or diesel locos are possible. So i guess you can find the speaker also for US locos.

    Quite a lot of scenic work for a Z-scale layout,a nd making scenes for a scale this small is not an easy task! I am curious why you didn't weather the cars and engines, though - is Z-scale not conductive to weathering, or is just a project for a later time?

    • @tommurphy4307

    Man, you’ve got some huge collection of equipment, crossing all eras. Do you get your trains from a particular supplier? Ive Googled Z scale starter sets & been bombarded with N scale adverts. I live in remote Australia, so any purchases would be mail order. Id like to get started, any suggestions?

    In your experience, are derailments more frequent in 1:220 than in 1:160?

    • @rroadron7970
      @rroadron7970  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derailments are rare. Almost always operator (me) error.🙂

    • @tommurphy4307
      @tommurphy4307 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its all about wheel flanges and contours- if the flanges are to scale- then there shouldn't be much difference in the frequency of derailments. i would say more n-scalers are running low-pro wheels- so put that in your grinder and see what comes out.

      you can run 100-car trains in any scale as long as you have the power (both in loco AND track power) and the traction.
