That's the difference between Frida and Agnetha's "loss of love" leads, I think. For Agnetha it's usually very sad, heartbroken, and hopeless. She cries with her voice. For Frida it's more world weary and accepting, with maturity and strength and a certain power to her voice. Their voices were both quite suited to these types of songs, just in different ways.
@@rdwulf6289 Oh I'd love to hear them take over reach others leads! Just as a thought exercise. Supposedly Agnetha really wanted to sing Our Last Summer and Frida really wanted to sing The Winner Takes it All.

I was in college when “When All is Said and Done” came out. My best friend, a fellow fraternity brother, and I were obsessed with this song. I remember him picking me up from the airport and this song came on the car radio. We both started dancing in our seats. I’ve had a wonderful life…but, as wirh everyone, I’ve had my share of challenges and bad times. It wasn’t until the last 10 years when fhe verse, “it’s so strange/when you’re down and lying on the floor/how you rise, shake your head, get up and ask for more,” really made sense to me. Whenever I’ve had a low moment in the last 10 years, I play that verse over and over and over. It resonates down deep into my soul. In the amazing “Matt Pop” version, that verse really POPS. While the overall song is steeped in pathos, that verse gives HOPE for the future, and encourages the listener to celebrate their survival through bad times.
I’ve known this song for 40 years and yet never really listened to the lyrics. Now as I approach the end of my life and losing people I’ve loved I only hear the lyrics now. Birds of passage, reflections of treks, Thanks for all the generous love and fun, Neither you nor I'm to blame when all is said and done, There’s no hurry anymore. Perfectly sums up life.
Dear Luke, I'm 67 years old and I'm a big Abba fan. I am Italian, a country where, at the time, unfortunately, Abba did not have the success they deserved. And seeing a young man like you comment with such enthusiasm on an Abba song (and above all the lyrics) fills me with joy and moves me to tears ! I think you really captured the profound meaning of the melodies and words of this song. But I listened to your reaction to almost all Abba songs and I was moved by your reaction in all of them!! I also understand that you are also an expert in music and this increases my respect for you. I tried to involve my son (who is more or less your age) in this passion of mine, but I couldn't! Two weeks ago I was in London to see Abba Voyage and I was moved there too! Thank you very much, Omar P.S. I used google translate and put the comment in both English and Italian
I love this song. I've always thought of it as very sad, because of the pain in Frida's vocals, and the overall sadness I associated with her ad the time. But I like your emphasis of on the coming to terms with the ending of the relationship, which is very strongly reflected in the lyrics and perhaps also in the strength of her voice.
I remember buying this the day the album came out and in my dads car driving home I would always read the lyrics. I was shocked at the time to see the word Sex, in this one. It's all over the place now but back then, not so much. Love the song.
I felt the same way - I was shocked that Abba should explicitly use the S word! I felt even more shocked 40 years later when Agnetha sings "screw you" in I Can Be That Woman, from Voyage.😗

Always look forward to your Abba reviews Luke. Love the terms you use to describe them: like "bouncy happiness". Not sure if it was intended to be happy or sad, but Abba was always able to combine the two with their music style, Frida and Agnetha's range of voice and their heartfelt interpretations. This reached #27 in the states, which would be their last top 40. Was not released in Gr. Britain🤔. Love the song-love seeing you Luke. Love❤the way you love Abba. So long. Have you done "So Long?" It's Abba-rockin'! Bye Luke.

Thx. You stopped the video about Agnetha, I found it almost magical, with her hair moving and her candor in her expressions on her face and eyes. I have something in me for this song, it touches me particularly.
I know and love ABBA for more than 40 years but I must say that nobody can transport my emotions better that you do. Thank you for the professional but always respectful reactions.
Such a great song. Frida slays her vocals here. This was Frida and Benny's break up song. Frida found out Benny had cheated on her and gotten another woman pregnant and he left her. Shortly after this Frida cut all her beautiful red hair off as a screw you Benny statement.

This was ABBA's 14th and final U.S. Top 40 hit (Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart)...............(peaking at Nº27) so the title of the single is very apropos for the respective occasion.
I am so glad you are on the ABBA journey! There are many more for you to hear and review. In 1980 Radio One had a contest for listeners to write in on a postcard the most popular group. My cousin wrote ABBA and won a transistor radio in the shape of a Coca Cola bottle 🙂
I'm so happy that Luke reacted to this. It's one of my favourites. There's a demo where the last verse is repeated, and Frida puts all of her anger and sadness into the vocals. I think Benny and Bjorn didn't want to release that version as it was just too raw.
@@Beachgirl1 I think it only reached 27 on billboard but was on the radio ALL the time. Then Frida's "Something Going On" came out the next year. So her voice was around a lot in the States during that time.
Frida's = the winner takes it all . Only a single in the 🇺🇸USA, instead of head over heels 👠which was the second visitor's single in Europe / japan , Australia etc. 🎉❤
The first verse was repeated during the recording but they edited it out for the album. They should have kept it in. It's used in the Voyage show and Frida's vocal in that repeated verse is spectacular. I think this was their last truely great song before the end of the initial run.
I reckon Benny hoped she felt like this, because he's the one who dumped her for a bloody talk-show host. And as for the line of "not too old for sex"-he's lucky she didn't smack him one. But she could argue her sexual peak will be long after his! To be honest, people hardly listen to lyrics, so I think most of the message was lost on the idiots all over for years after this release. Then again, too many people only bang on about 'Dancing Queen', and unlike all other acts, ABBA were at their pinnacle, making music that just gets better and better, so it's a real criminal loss that their 1982 album never completed, though one can still do this-and I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do by adding 4 of the obvious CHESS singles to the other 6 from 1982, therefore making a 10 track album. And if anyone listens to extra leftover tracks, B-sides and the Gemini albums from 1985 and 1987 (plus the 2 B-sides) you get even more ABBA product and sung ABBA-style, you just have to accept other singers doing it, but it's still ABBA material mainly, carrying on from where they left off, and truth is, it's even better and more powerful than their charming long-awaited comeback album released in 2021.
A catchy song in the 80's sound garb, somehow too obvious and unfinished; there is something special compositionally missing that makes a good pop song. Unfortunately, the same can be said of one or the other song on the albums The Visitors and Voyage; they are more reminiscent of the short, simply structured songs of the first three albums. In terms of thoughts and ideas, the two gentlemen were already working on their upcoming musical and Frida on her solo album with Phil Collins. So the break or separation was heralded. When All Siad And Done!!!
Do you even listen to the words. You only seem to talk about the music part and not the actual message. If you listened to the words, you would know this is a break up song.
Frida`s vocals are so full of emotion and powerful. Absolutely fantastic lead vocals. The harmonies are always brilliant.

Yes, it's a very mature song, but also very sad. Magnificent interpretation of Frida, unmistakable voice with that touch of melancholy.
