They do not understand replay and fan interference and the ump would have called it an out. It was the rule in the past for obvious reasons, includes fare balls touched as they roll along a wall in foul territory, the up gets to decide what base to put the runner on and who scores. It differs from a ball being thrown out of play by a player where the bases awarded are fixed. Probably because a down the line hit no player has touched the ball, the base runners with a guy on 1st may not have reached 1st and 2nd base when the touching occurs and may have been over half way to 3rd and 2nd when the fielder get to the ball without the touching.
