Dowop, Bebop, Rock & Rock, R & B even has a rhymic sound to it, were our musians were rhyming in their lyrics. I’m half PR, been to the Bronx, and also a couple years older than Fat Joe and I have to say: a handful of Puerto Ricans were into hip hop shortly AFTER it was ‘named’ (not “invented” because what is called Hip Hop is just black urban culture that existed all over the USA, New York just gave it a label and outside of specific things like scratching records and painting on Subway trains New York didn’t “invent” anything, black neighborhoods across America had Block parties with sound systems and all that stuff that’s called Hip Hop today.) but there were a few Puerto Ricans who participated in the festivities BUT not as 50/50 co creators. Hip Hop was based around the music of James Brown (among others ) what Puerto Rican household had extensive JB and soul collections? What part of Puerto Rican culture is prevalent in Hip Hop? I can’t call any. And as I said: I’m half PR with Bronx lineage. Puerto Ricans were the FIRST non American Blacks to be accepted in the culture but that’s as far as it goes. 💯

Two turntables looping a break beat is merely an extension of what was already done. We did it during slavery also. U.S black culture is Hip hop culture, with a sprinkle of Jamaican influence (DJ. Cool Hurk), and later came the Porterican the first Latinos to contribute to Hip hop. The Porterican hopefully are happy with to be the first Latinos to join the movement in the early days. But let's keep it real, from the funk, music being played at hip hop parties to the dances, the mcing, and rapping it all came from US blacks culture accept for the break technique used in the music to my understanding that's where DJ. Cool Hurk came in, the Portericans didn't start breakdancing but they added to it, and helped spread b-boying around the world earning there place in hip hop history in terms of being the first Latinos to join the movement.
The culture of HipHop comes from the evolution of genres like Bepop which was FBA culture. It derives from the artist of the south like Pigmeat and Mom's Mabley who migrated to NY. This is why there's no 1 person that can be pinpointed to "creator" of hip hop. But we can find it's origins with the culture of Bepop and the rapping and dancing which has always been FBA.

Building were burned for insurance jobs by the landlords.. the only people in the community were blacks and Latinos( mainly Puerto Rican’s who’s parents moved to New York for education)…. SOUL TRAIN IS AN EXMPLE Locking in Los Angeles started in early 70's before break dancing was popular, then there was Pop Locking, another LA/West Coast style, thus brining in "The Lockers", which is probably the most famous street troop ever. So when NY sees Soul Train, they see Lockers, so we did have an influence on the street dance of NY and they took it to another level with the many, many, B-Boy styles.
In New York at the time soul train was on we were already up rocking which was the first stage of breaking dancing. Soul train began in 71 we didn’t see soul train in New York until 1972
Popping and locking wasn't hip hop. It was funk. It entered the Bboy lexicon eventually, but wasn't danced to the same music and had a different origin and tradition.

I used to work in the music industry during the late 80s to mid-90s handling street promotions for major labels and would go up to New York all the time. Latinos, Caribbean people, and Black American cultures ALL converged to create this genre called Hip Hop. It was international from its inception and started from the grassroots. Many label execs didn't even think the genre would be successful. They thought it was a fad. Hip Hop Culture was b-boy/girl dancing, graffiti, deejaying, fashion, battles, etc. I personally was able to witness all of it and Latinos (and Whites) were there for ALL OF IT. NYC is the Mecca and was a melting pot back then. There was really no other place in America quite as unique as NYC. Many of Hip Hop's pioneers had Caribbean/Latino heritage even though they were American. Folks need to stop with the racist bullshit.

The founding fathers were those who helped shape the culture. Hip hop is not just music. It's a culture that includes dance, art, business, music, etc.
The progenitors of this culture were people from NYC, specifically Black people. Some of those Black people were descendants of slaves in America, some of those people were descendants of Caribbean immigrants. We grew up together in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and formed crews and the culture grew from there. Tariq has you dudes on a FBA agenda and trying to rewrite history.
Flowers, Herc, Flash, Bam, Theodore were all from varying descent. They all however can be said to help shape the culture. Flash and Theodore innovated DJing techniques.

There is definitely Latino presence in early HipHop.. they helped mold the genre. Anyone who denies that is uneducated on the matter.
I think the problem is when people want to take credit for the creation of the genre itself.. assisting is not creating.
