Hitler's First War - Thomas Weber

- Scholars often argue World War I served as the perfect crucible for Hitler’s rise to power. Award-winning author Thomas Weber thinks otherwise. Join us as he discusses the dictator’s formative experiences as a soldier, demonstrating how and why he aggressively policed the myth of his wartime experiences. Examining Hitler’s political epiphany in 1919, Weber shows how the path from 1918-19 to Auschwitz was far less twisted than commonly believed.
Presented in conjunction with the centennial exhibition Crucible: Life & Death in 1918.
Presented in partnership with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education and the National Archives at Kansas City.

Well, I understand the criticisms that others have made here but, I also appreciate that this gentleman is apparently trying to get at the genuine Hitler. I think we should all cut him some slack & remember that in the end, he has contributed to the body of knowledge regarding one of history’s most evil & equally fascinating characters. My only criticism is that I wish there’d been more substance to the lecture. My favorite is still John Toland’s book on Hitler. There’s just so much trivial, yet nitty gritty details that it almost reads like a novel. It was the first time I’d really began to focus on the world Adolf grew up in & realized that anti-Semitic and anti-Slavic views were quite pervasive at the time in much of Europe. This alone helps to put the question of “How could people buy into these ideas?” into perspective.
"Deeply entrenched"...Nice unintentional pun there !

Jawohl
Ends at 10:11 booring. Ugh.
Did Hitler have a crush on Hanfstaengel wife, Helena. (38:31).. People have wondered.
He did
"Rear area pig" Adolf Hitler was sent in Oct 1918 for a long trip to Pasewalk military hospital which was only for mental cases.
He was also mocked as "tea boy" by other soldiers. A fellow member of the support staff of regimental headquarters of Hitler described his job as being a “postmistress.”
Not accurate, Hitler had been gassed in the trenches which wasn't the first time he had been injured. Hitler was twice decorated, once with the iron cross and again after being wounded by shrapnel.
But here's the unbiased truth - Hitler was hospitalized after suffering what was termed "nervous blindness", when in fact Hitler had suffered a nervous breakdown. Which is a mental breakdown, more commonly recognized as shell shock or PTSD.
Which of course later in life led to his rapid mental decline, Parkinson's disease while being completely unfit and incompetent. Hitler was in a hurry to win WWII because the man already knew he was dying, and ended up killing 70 million people and destroying Germany. He was quit literally the greatest help the allies aver had. Churchill said it best......no one individual did more to aid us, the allies in winning WWII than Adolph Hitler himself.
He totally lied about Hitler's WW1 service. Watch the doc The Unknown Soldier...His fellow soldaten highly respected him
At 20.21 does Weber say 'unwillling echo board'? Did he meant unwitting? And what is an echo board?
Completely contradicts the mark Felton video i watched. Wonder what one is closest to the truth?
Do you have a link to Mark Felton video?
I know, and in general there are so many points of view, and angles, but I wouldn't say "completely", though.
Mark Felton video seems more authentic. Thomas Weber states " Hitler was an Ordinary Soldier in WWI. Not many ordinary soldiers earn 2 Iron Crosses sending messages. That shows an amazing oversight. Thomas Weber makes the classic mistake of playing whack a mall on Hitlers background to shape it into the Victors narrative. It is very subjective in outlook ensuring it will not offend or contradict. Mark Felton's seemed to just stick with the facts and allow the viewer to make their own mind up.
Hitler had the rank of Lance Corporal in WW1
I agree, but it is you and I against the world. Those who don't know German and/or don't know about military rank structure seem determined to have it be "a former Corporal in the German Army" rather than "a former Lance Corporal in the Bavarian Army." The US Army equivalent would be Private First Class.
If it is necessary to give Hitler an unauthorized and posthumous promotion in the Bavarian Army, why not make him a Sergeant or Captain? That would be no more fraudulent than "Corporal Hitler."

哇,您在美国学历史么,好羡慕啊
Well this was a waste of time.
Yeah..a full 10 minutes of waffle before the bit you clicked on starts. But it turns out to be yet another crow-barred in reference to anything American.
This was bad
ww1 radicalized germans
ww2 radicalized russians
SIXTH
Genius...you mean like Donald Trump 🤔

Apropos 1914 picture, did Hitler really have that kind of tooth brush mustache then? Quit diffrent from the Wilhelmina he had later in ww1. I think its Photoshop.
It's a rea picture. I have an old hitler bio printed in the 1970 and it is there. Tho I don't think it's Hitler. The face is too fat!
Hitler had a full mustache at the beginning of war. He almost died from a gas attack. Because his mask couldn't seal. So he cut it down to the famous toothbrush. Ruining it for the rest of us for all time. Lol
german obsesion whit literature
especially nietscthe and dostoyewski.
Very odd he was never promoted past gefreiter. 4+ years service. VERY odd.
Webber points out that Hitler declined promotions or reassignments that would have taken him away fom his Army family as a regimental (not battalion or company, which would have been more hazardous) runner.
