So, actually, while many of her songs DO reflect her own personal reflections, Melanie is known for her specific storyline followed by her fandom AND her fictional alter-ego/persona named “CRYBABY.” So, before this album , her k-12 era was an album she had in addition to her K-12 film on TH-cam that followed the storyline of her alter-ego “Crybaby” in the stages of “school.” Each song had a film that was dedicated to moments in her “school era” as she was growing up after her baby years in the "Crybaby" era. The K-12 film was uploaded along with her album “K-12” over 3 years ago. Her debut album, “Cry Baby” that was released in 2015 was about her alter-ego “Crybaby’s” life in her haunted and twisted initial baby years. So, two of her albums “Crybaby” and “K-12” were dedicated to her alter-ego/persona “Crybaby” whose life was centered around dark, twisted, realistic, and magical moments that could even be a reflection of society which 10/10 a lot of Melanie’s songs DO RELATE to our sometimes wicked society. Moreover, after these two notable eras of Melanie, many fans were speculating on what was NEXT for Melanie and her ego “CRYBABY.” However, on February 18, 2023, she posted a picture of a tree trunk with the words “RIP CRYBABY” on her ig which caused many fans to question if she was done with her “Crybaby” persona and moving on which she has confirmed to move on. "In the grave" at 2:30, that is not Melanie, but Crybaby confirming that she is unalive and is being reincarnated to become a NEW being which is what you see her new form as when she is FINALLY out of the grave. A source quotes “ Melanie talked about how her character Crybaby would be dead in her next film. Melanie uses an oxymoron by saying that her body has died but that she’s still alive. This is also an allegory to two things 1. Crybaby the character has died (hence above and “RIP Crybaby” from her Instagram post). This means that she is being figuratively reincarnated, and after posting the fifth snippet for PORTALS, this was confirmed when Melanie hatched from an egg as a four - eyed creature that is on the PORTALS cover. 2. The Crybaby era has died, i.e. the new photoshoot and Crybaby’s death. Melanie has also stated that she wouldn’t be singing songs from Crybaby in her next tour.” So, I know you guys do not know too much about how her storyline works lol, but just know that this is a new era of Melanie we are all witnessing and it all is connected prior to her previous works and storylines.

On her MV are many refferences to Tarot. Like the 10 of Swords, when her old-she is lying on the ground and her new-she is holding the sword.
All of that have several meanings.
In tarot Death is the Arcane N°13. Portals have 13 songs on the standar version. Playing the album from the last wich is WOMB to the first, DEATH would be the 13th song.
Also, last detail.... the ending of the last song, WOMB, loops into DEATH.
The lyrics are real poetry...
You kind of have to have seen her old stuff to understand her new stuff. Her 3 albums create a trilogy of a character she made and their growth. She killed the character off and showed she’s immortal basicly. You should react to her old stuff, I would definitely watch

She killed her past self (crybaby) to show she wasn't gonna bring back old concerts with her old art and music and that k-12 productions and crybaby is gone forever it was metaphorical. The song is supposed to be interpreted that she's back from production, the song dead connecting with lyrics "back from the dead" also being metaphorical, is her in a way saying she's back from finishing k-12 and her huge break to start a new era (and album).
You have to admit that they did a pretty decent job extrapolating the backstory based on two videos. They didn’t know who crybaby was but they figured a lot out about her. It’s actually really impressive.

the four-eyed creature is crybaby's new body in the afterlife, crybaby (melanie's character) died and her last two albums (crybaby and k-12) tell her character's childhood (crybaby) and life (k-12), consequently her last album (portals) talks about life after death
Melanie's character designs combine a lot of typical bullied victims characteristics. 4 eyes is a nickname for people wearing glasses. Her ears resemble Dumbo the elephants ears as people get called that for having big ears. Wrinkly hands and big lips are added because those are also bully targets.
To answer ur question her looks is simply metaphoric, evolution. Her evolving into a new version of herself. A new era. The “rip crybaby” is a character she played on her first album, crybaby was in the grave and now her new era is here (her fairy like self) in this new album “portals. So in a way yes u were right at the end there, her old self/music and creating new music and just growing as a person. All her songs are so metaphoric/ have deep meanings behind them , you have to really listen and watch with a open mindset. Their awesome. ❤
I’ve been a fan of Melanie Martinez since her days on The Voice. So this Faerie is Melanie’s 2nd persona. Her first persona was Crybaby, and now this is her new persona after being reborn. All her songs and Albums have a story. (Sorda like an Anthology, but there’s an “order” to watch them. ).
First, her Cry Baby Album. This one tells the child era stories (e.g. how she got the name, dysfunctional family, social life, etc). Each song in Cry Baby has a music video to it. Definitely look up the order yall wanna watch it in. Lol
Her second album K-12, tells Crybaby’s story through school and other things surrounding school (e.g. authority, rules, norms, peer pressure, etc.) This album has a whole MOVIE for it. Definitely recommend you watch it!!!
Now, we’re caught up to Melanie’s third album, PORTALS. In this album or era, Melanie has “killed” Crybaby, but more like she’s transformed and ascended into a higher being or form.
So yea, definitely look into watching her older stuff so you get an idea of how she has grown as an artist and as a person. Then the other PORTAL songs will make sense. lol
The 4 eyed fairy creature (her name is portals,) is just an evolution of her main character Crybaby (crybaby is dead now, basically was her entire career before portals). Melanie is a really shy girl in real life so she uses alter egos to express herself. Basically she has left the Crybaby era in her past, that's why all of the songs and music videos on TH-cam have RIP Crybaby as their thumbnail. death is metaphorical. People want her to stay the same while she wants changes in life. Death in an occult meaning is transitioning. The Portals era is more less her transitioning her career in a different direction. So you two were spot on with your observations that she is basically reborn.
Ps don't think too hard about the imagery, it's gorgeous creative and dark with heaps of symbolic meanings. She does that alot and it's fun for the people that like to do theories and study her lore. All her songs and music videos have deeper meaning but you don't need to dive deep to enjoy her music.
Void is her saying she was trapped as Crybaby and Basically got stuck in her own mind with that charater. People drained the fun out of her. She created portals to escape that void.
My favorite song from the album is spiderwebs and I'm hoping she does something similar to crybaby and 12k with this album. (Crybaby: every song got a music video. 12k got its own jukebox musical movie, yah shes a hard worker that girl)

I also compare this with the music and the video's by Kate Bush, Björk Guðmundsdóttir, Aurora Aksnes and Billie Eilish. Oh, and Nick Cave, of course. Melanie Martinez made the character Crybaby. Crybaby was the normal human, When Crybaby died, she was reborn into a new creature, (the 4 eyes, ears pink nymph).
She made a movie (k-12) and at the end she stepped through a portal. We don’t know if she fully went through it but all we know is that she died and entered a different realm, and that’s why you see a mushroom with r.I.p engraved in it because that’s her literal grave. Another thing is that she was reborn and she wants to show the readers about what the after life is from her perspective and to show the concept of immortality. She is basically stuck between life and death and her album name was supposed to be purgatory which makes everything make sense.
I had read something that said the reason she had 4 eyes was because at the end of her k-12 film Lilith had kill her and her best friend Angelita becoming the creature that's why she has different voices and during the movies they stated they probably has many other lives together maybe as conjoined twins.
5:50 her character crybaby which is her character in k-12 and her album crybaby kinda has like lore but some people think her best friend in k-12 and her died and when that happened their soles became one hence the 2 sets of eyes and big ears
5:45 when u guys asked this I wanted to tell you guys that she wanted to make a very unique and fun album so she made that creature since 2019 I think. So what she wears now are just face prosthetics . It takes her 3-4 hours to put the prosthetics on for concerts, meetings, videos, but in reality she looks so pretty with the half-half hair. And yes it’s just a character that she plays!
