You wouldn’t believe how many people are yelled at while in Africa doing an adventure tour. Most safari companies had to write up a rule because some people think it’s cool to try and get a closeup photo of hippos.

Hippos will literally attack and capsize boats and will not tolerate humans getting between them and the water. Females are particularly defensive and aggressive if anyone gets between them and their young. Hippos kill roughly 500 people every year with their giant 20-inch canine tusks. Trust me, eating an entire pumpkin to them is equivalent to us chewing down on a large peanut.

The way they pause for a second, before biting into them and slowly slide back into the water is priceless. They look like they're sampling the best steak money can buy!😆
They didnt really pause tho I think. Even for their jaws it wasnt that easy to crush the pumpkins so it took them a few seconds. You can see the one in front building up pressure.
It was a struggle. Not a pause. But not a losing struggle.
Interestingly enough, hippos are what you call facultative herbivores, meaning they are anatomically herbivores and can get all their nutrients from plants unlike a true omnivore, but they still kill and eat animals on very rare occasions, possibly to supplement minerals and salt just because they can due to their massive size and power, and huge mouths.
They can just kill and eat anything on a whim.

These are the most docile hippos you'll ever see (because they are in captivity) Hippos are extremely vicious in general and seeing the bite force on these cuties is something to be feared and respected.
The part where the person walks by quickly and leans over a bit does make me a tad nervous. I'd hope that the hippos wouldn't bother them if they fell in--at least because they wouldn't want to hurt the ticket to their next meal.

I really love it too, because it goes to show that under certain conditions even wild and dangerous beasts of the field can learn to trust and be friendly with humans, i.e. "don't bite the hand that feeds you". These hippos were likely born in captivity, so it wasn't a matter of "taming" them so much as positively conditioning them and raising them with human interaction. In the wild, they are fiercely territorial, and obviously they are also massive and strong. But in captivity, though they are still massive and incredibly powerful and therefore still every bit potentially dangerous, they are more akin to a cow than a lion.
That fact that something can damn near consume an entire pumpkin in just a couple bites is actually terrifying lol
and to think a big pumpkin could possibly choke a blue whale to death. they dont have big throats because they eat krill

@@CharlieBarkinTheDog you misunderstand how they feed. they open their mouths super wide and close it around a ball of krill. once the krill is inside they contract their throat and filter the water out leaving the krill, they dont suck water in to get krill stuck in their teeth and t hen swallow them.
