NY's GHOST HOTEL= Abandoned Ruins in the Catskills

Derek "Deek" Diedricksen treks (5 miles round trip) up Woodstock, NY's Lookout Mountain to film the ruins of the once magnificent 300+ room hotel- "The Outlook Mountain House" in Woodstock, NY. The hotel on this site burned down THREE times in its history, and was finally rebuilt starting in 1928 out of concrete (when it burned down again). The concrete usage is the only reason the ruins of this hotel, its rear family-mansion, and various other foundations around it still exist. Being TOO remote, this hotel was never as successful as its other region's counterparts such as The Catskill Mountain House. This hotel also stands as one of the very last remaining (even in ruins) of the heyday of the Catskill NY resort boom (which saw its slow death in the 1930s).
Be warned- its a fairly strenuous hike, and this is a region with many rattlesnake habitats. The building is also crumbling and in various states of decay and collapse- so enter at your own risk- or not at all!

My boyfriend and I hiked up to the Overlook in the early 70's when they had given up on the third restoration, we found rolls of carpeting strewn about as well as a grand piano just stitting on the grounds. My aunt who lived nearby said it just became impossible to contine with renovations due to weather and trucks unable to navigate the steep road to the place, so the developers just walked away from it. If you continue up past the hotel site, you'll find a rock engraved with dates going back to the 1880's, possibly from guests when it was still active. Boyfriend and I also explored ruins of the great mansions once found on the north coast of Long Island. Wish I could go back in time and revisit those sites, they held so much history.

My brother-in-law mountain bikes and he has photographed rattlers in the area - there are also copperheads. I've never seen one on Overlook, but they are there. The road up is pretty wide and not overgrown, so there's not much risk of surprising one - if they see you coming they usually take off.

Thinking of adding this location on to our New Paltz trip at the end of the month, along with the old girls school in Millbrook.
Ya know how, if you know a 'locals only' or 'secret' cool place, you hesitate to share the info, for fear of ruining the place with too many people ?
That's where I am at right now. Love your original channel, love this new channel Deek; but can I trust you with info on 'The Chute' - an old DPW project to contain a small creek on the northern end of ONE of the Finger Lakes in NY? Basically, it's a fairly decent sized, man made water slide and tiny natural waterfalls ... but bring towels and a doormat to slide on! The 'beach' is over=spill concrete - like the 'slide'

I used to live in Woodstock and hiked this dozens of times. Hiked it again last week. I always love the hotel ruins. Did you continue to the fire tower? There's a short spur trail (500 feet) that takes you to a panaromic view of the Hudson Valley. And at the overlook, there's a bunch of 100 year old grafitti carved into the rock.

Born in that part of the woods. Great views on top of mountain. Love the Buddhist place at the base. Woodstock changed so much. But still like going home to visit.

@@rainbowcitizen4897 My family has been in Ulster County almost four centuries, and I grew up in Woodstock. I was nine when the concert happened in Bethel and Woodstock changed overnight - it had a long history as an artists' colony, with very rich culture, and I ushered at the original Playhouse as a kid for a quarter a night - then it became a tourist destination. Now it's overrun with rich New York City people and the place is a bad parody of what it once was. Very sad. Yes, there is a Tibetan monastery across from the parking area at the foot of the Overlook trail, and the old Lutheran summer camp in Wittenberg that I went to as a boy is now part of a Zen Buddhist compound near Phoenicia. I have a neuromuscular disease that has weakened the bones in my feet - the last time I climbed Overlook was almost 20 years ago and I snapped three metatarsals in my left foot - I love it up there, but doubt I'll get there again in this lifetime.

Two of my father's friends hiked up there, probably in the 1940s, to go hunting. The building was far more intact, with a wooden roof and a cupola. They went up in the cupola, and somehow one of their guns fired and fatally wounded one of them - his friend tried to carry him down the mountain, but finally set him own to go get help, and by the time he returned he had died. My father would not say who it was, as there were still surviving family, but I wonder if any local historians can corroborate this story.

It occurs to me that this place is remarkably free of debris. Somebody’s got to do some effort and expense to clean it up.

Next time you are in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, you should check out the Loveland Castle. Talk about architecture and it was hand built. Not abandoned, but very unique museum. I love the cement blocks that were made using milk cartons. Chateau Laroche www.lovelandcastle.com/

Umm, and you won't see rattlesnakes in the winter time they are cold-blooded and they are hibernating. It's in the springtime that you have to worry when they come out to sun themselves. Maybe that place closed in the thirties but many of the other places in the borsche belt really took off in the 50s and 60s. What a shame that so many of these places were so beautiful and now they are just in ruins and really a lot of it's because of the progress and the change of things. Many people don't know that Jewish people were treated like blacks and they were not allowed in many of these resorts so they had to have their own places in the Catskills were they could go.
