I've tuned almost every turbo car I've owned. However, I am seriously considering not tuning my '23 WRX. The car drives perfectly and the balance between power and cornering/braking is pretty much spot on. The only gripe I have is the 6k redline, coupled with the short gearing. That is where the car loses on MPG as well. 5th and especially 6th could have been raised a bit. I'm not into drag racing, too many people are unidimensional and trash their cars just to beat the idiot next to them at a light. There's always a faster car, enjoy driving for YOU and forget the morons. The new EVs out there really put any ICE car to shame in short city sprints. Some middle aged female VP in her XC40 recharge will toast most muscle cars to 20-30 while she is doing her makeup in the review mirror. The second issue about tuning the VB is it reminds me a lot of my 99.5 Audi A4 (yes there was a 99.5!). 150 hp from the factory and a gearbox perfectly tuned to it. I had it tuned (soldered chip back then!) in person at the old ECS tuning in Norton OH (before they became HUGE) to 225 hp. Wow! Tons of torque and blistering speed........but......the transmission ratios were the same. 2nd to 3rd (if memory serves) was at about 54. That transmission had super long trows as well, so the tune was only half as enjoyable as it should have been. For those of you tuning, have fun, go fast and stay safe! I hope you get plenty of hp out of your FA24!
I feel that Subaru detuned this motor to combat past reliability issues by adding almost a half liter more but dropping peak boost and countering that with aggressive gearing. They tried to give people higher boost and a jumpy tune and kids just had to have more, tuned too high (if at all) and popped the motor, then blamed subaru. I had a stage 2 wrx, grimmspeed everything, tuned by drunkmann. It was great, but I was always worried the engine would go at any moment even though I babied it most times. Next car is gonna be a wrx and my first (probably only) brand new car ever and I'm strongly considering ordering whatever options I can from factory and leaving the tune alone. These were never crazy race cars and I like a warranty.
I've had my 23 WRX for a year and it's my first turbocharged car. For me it has plenty of power when it comes on. But then I'm 62 years old. It is a true driver's car though in my opinion.
I have a 23 white VB with 1k miles on it, it's way slower then my APR 18 Golf R and I'm definitely going to tune it..I got the ets intake just waiting,.. I'm building a 1300hp S10 with Turbo LS, my suburu is a good daily but definitely need a tune to be the perfect daily!!
I felt the same way… now I’m like “what the hell is a warranty?!” 😂 Orders intake, fmic, and access port. “Hi may I speak with Dman please?” I say a CRX would be cool to see done. 🤙🏼
I have a stage 1 tuned vb wrx with the same axleback tuned by Graham at boosted performance i also installed catch cans which i recommend because there was significant oil in the pcv system at 8k miles however with just this tune no real power mods it opens it up like you said will grab the road and skrt the tires with traction on and it feels angry the torque is much more and when normally driving around it feels smoother id recommend it highly
My WRX is 2023, stock it is fast but not wild. You can drive comfortable and fast without even getting into the boost. But sometimes you want just a little bit more. After I installed JB4 I use two maps: first one is 16 PSI of max boost and second is 17 PSI with more aggressive boost at the beginning. I would say second map is even too aggressive for me, even at 3000 RPM it kicks in the boost and you feel that there is too much power (you start to play with thith accelerator and BOV does PSHHH when you really do not want this) - so you have to go one or two gears down to keep it out of the boost ~2000 - 2500 RMP which is not good for motor. So most balanced for me appeared the first map with very conservative tune. For long trips on highway I switch to stock map. Sometimes you want to play sports - then third map is good. Fortunately you can switch maps from your mobile just on the go. So I like JB4 for this. May be in the future I will try E30 mix and more aggressive tune like 20 PSI, but so far I do not see any reason for this.
@@AutoEnthusiast I like it so much. No Issues with it. You can do logs, create your own tunes and switch them on the go which is not possible with COBB Access Port. Also in case of you need some warranty fixes you can take it out from car in a minutes and it leaves no traces. So warranty cannot be voided
it does still trip the same signals as an AP, max boost among other things are logged in a way where is no way to erase the value, so if the factory actually has to check, they can see if anyone was tuned at any point
@@AutoEnthusiast You are mistaken. JB4 is sitting between Engine and stock ECU and it is altering signals. There is no direct link between ECU and Engine, so ECU "think" it continue control engine with stock parameters , but in reality it connected to JB4 and not the engine. JB4 simulates stock Engine for ECU so it even have no idea that it controls "virtual engine" created by JB4 instead of real engine. But real engine is controlled by JB4, not the ECU. So ECU always shows stock parameters , and even on car dashboard you see Boost: 12 PSI when in reality it is over 21
My 2 cents. What the VB doesn’t have and that you once had and interests us.. « RAWNESS » People follow you because we like the wrx (especially the VA). Why? You passionately gave us good videos that are; -insightful -informative -seemed honest -authentic What do we like about the VA? Affordable, reliable, fun, manual, « RAWNESS » for the « common man ». That one is important. There are nicer, better cars but they are not affordable for the average Joe. What about keeping the same theme to inform, entertain the average Joe. Next one, STI. After? Rebuilt fun cars - within an affordable budget (30,35k or less) Used S4, S5, mazda rx7, 8, Supra, Celica.etc. Just brainstorming
Is it true even a stage one OTS Cobb tune could have a warranty claim denial result if something goes wrong? Anything that involves reprogramming the ECU right? I’d love to do one but I’m just not willing to take the risk. I have a 7 year/100k warranty so I guess once that’s over if I even still have the car by then I suppose.
Stock wrx needs something opposite to engine power - it needs engine braking, that would make driving experience much more natural and connected (but less effortless).
@@AutoEnthusiast Sorry I didn't get what is FS? Do you mean FA engine? Why it should be more robust? This engine can hold combustion at max boost and high RPM, it doesn't look like engine braking can apply more load than that combustion process. Even EJ25 engine which is known to be weaker than FA24 could produce noticeable engine braking force, but stronger FA cannot? Why? Just because the car is tuned to have very weak engine braking, and that's done not because of reliability concerns, but because of driving comfort - to prevent engine stalling, to make stick shift driving easy and effortless. But what makes driving simple and effortless at the same time it makes driving boring and disconnected, and it's literally disconnected - you don't control throttle anymore, it's controlled by algorithm and accelerator pedal position just provides recommendation for it - you release accelerator pedal completely and algorithm does something opposite to what you expect - instead of closing throttle it opens it to prevent engine braking. I am surprised that enthusiasts don't understand importance of engine braking for fun and connected driving experience - everyone is focused solely on acceleration, on top power and max boost, so manufactures could take away another half of fun driving experience - deceleration, and no media person complained about that.
It needs a serious makeover, I don’t see them often but when I do I’m so glad I kept my 21 Sti. They are hideous imo. And you should never describe doing a pull in a Subaru. Not much of a pull car.
Funny you say that. I always thought the VA’s looked like jelly beans w lights attached on the front and back and an interior that reminded of an 80’s econo box. To each their own
@@bsmith8297 depends on what’s done to the other car. Anything can all be made fast. But I wouldn’t expect someone who bought a wrx to say it’s hideous. The VB body is based on the VA. The VB added the fender flares and some more body curves. No Idea what platform, but maybe a manual swap of something
I think for what I am looking to push, I am unfortunately going to end up in an automatic of some sorts. But we shall see!
