  • Frank Deford is one of the most beloved sports journalists in America.
A contributing writer to Sports Illustrated for more than fifty years, and a longtime correspondent on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, these days, Deford is perhaps best known for his weekly commentaries on NPR’s Morning Edition. Since 1980, Deford has recorded 1,600 of them, and his new book, I’d Know That Voice Anywhere, collects the very best commentaries on athletes and the world of sports from the past 36 years.
Join him and sportscaster Bob Costas as they discuss Deford’s new book, athlete sex scandals, steroids, concussions, the NCAA, why gay athletes “play straight” and why he’s worried about living in an economy that is so dominated by golfers.

Loved Frank Deford. Seeing Bob Costas and him together brings back great memories. Two of the best.

The literary character and interests of these two is what separates them from the pack. I sometimes wonder how much reading today's writers do, especially of literature. My guess is very little to none.

Neither of these men really touched on who Ali was and why we continued to love him.

The story at 3:45 just goes to show you how short people's memories are. Even in matters of extreme importance.
