  • Fray - A young Marine veteran is facing a new battle back home while struggling through a shattered economy and burdened by the physical and emotional scars of war.
    Fray (2012)
    Director: Geoff Ryan
    Writers: Geoff Ryan
Stars: Bryan Kaplan, Marisa Costa, Catherine Johnson
    Genre: Drama
    Country: United States
    Language: English
Release Date: April 13, 2012 (United States)
    Filming Location: Portland, Oregon, USA
    Reviews:
"I am a hard marker when it comes to military-related films. As a combat veteran myself, I can vouch for this one. Those who find it "unconvincing" are just naive to the reality of coming "home" after desperately hoping & fighting to get back, only to find no home left. To find that the sacrifice did not lead to more prosperous opportunities, that people don't understand you, and that even though it feels like everything has been taken from you, somehow you still miss the experience that made you feel so alive and on the edge. You miss your brothers. It's an incredibly difficult thing to transition back into society after surviving with a group of people holding so close to the heart this notion of your home, wherever that is, and making it back to realize it doesn't exist anymore. You aren't the same and you never will be. It's like a whole new, more f'ed up phase of mental hardships that blindsided you. And I could write a book.
There's the reality of this emotion and then there's the attempt to express it. So I want to give this movie real props for getting it close enough to keep my attention. In fact, I totally fell into it and related to many scenes. I reflected about myself and how I am towards others at times. I reflected about how much I've gone on these respites alone in nature, just walking and wanting to be alone. So I don't think I spoiled anything in this review that isn't suggested in a preview. I just needed to write a review for the first time ever because I feel like this film deserves credit. And Bryan Kaplan did a fantastic job. That is all."

Fantastic movie. I am a combat vet with multiple tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. Although post deployment and separation transition care and support is certainly better today than it has ever been it still remains "on rails" and lets down the most vulnerable soldiers dealing with internal demons. I have attended too many funerals for soldiers that I served with that could see no other way forward and did not feel as though they had someone they could trust to turn to. I haven't got the solutions, however, I do know they need a higher standard of care.

My father was on the beach in Normandie at “D” day as a foot soldier. He was in the early twenties. He told me some stories about the nightmare of the war. But After the war he came back to Canada and he got married and raised seven children and started a business in construction. My point is that you can do anything when you set your mind to it. I did enjoy the movie and it made me think a lot.

Their is no war that doesn’t have casualties. Those who survived to go back to their country are still casualties. There are countless factors that roar in the minds of PTSD, and physical trauma. None are adequately addressed by
      “the system”.
1 out of 3 don’t make it back to manageable health. Maybe less.

Personally, I think your father's situation was absolutely one-in-a-million, and I'm glad that his story had a wonderful ending ... but the truth is that more than just some come back intending to have a life like that ahead of them, but it does not just depend on "you can do anything when you set your mind to it"!! Their emotional, psychological and physical scars are just way too much for that "Hollywood ending" to their story -- their country falls way too short in providing the total support (in so many ways) that they require upon their return.

My son for example he is still having a hard time even going through a therapists and the pills is unbelievable as for me I made the transition fine my problem is not psychological it is physical. I only which they had spiritual counselors. One off my sister in laws went to one and it helped her out immensely her son was assassinated in front of her in Mexico some Narcos they told her to lay down in front if him he was sitting in a sofa and they were was four of them with AK 47.
