  • In February 2022, Bangalore Airport was recognised as an important transfer hub for South India and is playing a key role in the growth of India's aviation sector. Bangalore Airport has augmented its existing two transfer zones to cater to growing transfer numbers for smooth transfer of passengers. Through creating connectivity to non-metro cities, Bangalore Airport has already facilitated the growth. In 2021, Bangalore Airport served 74 domestic destinations compared to 54 domestic destinations prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, then the highest amount ever served since its opening date. The additions have been mainly to non-metro cities. As a result, flights to non-metro routes have shown considerable increase from 58% prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to 63% in 2021.
The percentage of transfer passengers served by BLR had increased from 10% in 2019 to 19% 2021. It is expected that this number will continue to grow. Major airports contributing to transfer passengers at BLR are Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad and Goa.
Kempegowda International Airport is now "The Gateway to South and Central India". The geographical location of Bangalore and growing economy of Karnataka has helped BLR to become a major transportation hub. BLR airport offers a wide catchment area of 26 cities within a convenient flying time of 75 minutes. The transfer traffic has helped to strengthen loads on other domestic and international flights as well
