It's so refreshing to see such ethnic diversity in an American high school ensemble. Sarcasm aside, this show was splendid - especially the horn tosses at 3:40 and 3:55.
@Justaguy-nj5lm Why? First of all, there's top drum corps that do horn tosses all the time. Plus, I will trust those students to do the horn tosses because of how they're trained and who they've been trained by. Come on now....
@Justaguy-nj5lm But they aren't tossed like rifles, flags, or sabres. The instrument goes straight up into the air and comes right back down. There is no spin involved like with rifles, flags, and sabres. Therefore, the only thing irresponsible and done in bad taste is your closed mind inappropriately judging an indoor marching maneuver that is activity-sanctioned.
Can someone explain how these events are scored because I thought although Avon was musically solid and synchronized, Mililani High School’s performance was more complex and creative.
pretty sure they start at a base number and add points for every time a judge is like "solid." the judges have their own thing theyre in charge of, so like music, visual, creative, etc. for mpa, there are 3 or 4. not 100% sure how accurate this is for wgi
The way the scoring works is by comparing the quality of each ensemble, deciding how much of a difference there is between each group, and giving the point gaps accordingly to determine scores. The WGI winds panel is made up of 6 judges, 2 for general effect, 2 for music, and 2 for visual. Each judge gives a score out of 100 in 2 categories: composition, and achievement. Composition means the difficulty and quality of what they performers are asked to do, and achievement is how well the performers are doing it. The GE Judges job is to look at the whole thing, and the main thing they look for is show design. Avon got massive props in that, because when you watch this show, they have a very simple and obvious theme, but explore in in every aspect of their show, with a lot of ripples visually, the wave that they do when they all lock arms, with the back scrim, with their uniforms, etc. The music judges listen mainly for cleanliness, difficulty of music, intonation, musicality, etc, and Avon is uncontested when it comes to that. (Largely because they have Matt Harloff as their director who is the head director for Carolina Crown.) The visual Judges look for things like foot timing, form shape, difficulty of visuals, consistency across the ensemble. Avon did very well in that, with one of the two judges giving them a perfect score in both composition and achievement. While show concepts can vary in complexity, that’s not really what judges look for, with them looking more for how well the concept is explored and shown. Judges look less for “cool” things in shows, and look more for cleanliness. That’s why there’s no problem as an audience member in disagreeing with judges. Because audiences are looking for different things. I loved mililani’s show as well but I do not think that they should have won. I hope this clears things up a little bit.
I can definitely see that, but I would put this one as my second favorite winds show, being slightly ahead of solar winds. My favorite being murmuration by a lot.
@@donnyslader9025 yeah I mean it technically is, it’s just way harder to get a drumline or winds group overseas. There are some guards from Canada though.
Saw this in person after my owns school performance. What a crazy band! Showed us what we could really do.

What countries are represented in this "world championship" event? Oh only American corps - what a joke of a country.

Only school that I’m aware of that medaled in every wgi sector (winds, percussion, guard)
Maybe if it was truly a "world " championship competition it would be exciting.
