  • This is the final of the -54kg Male division, Choi Yeon-Ho v Chu Mu-Yen. the Korean fighter fought Roberto Cruz from the Phillipines to earn his place in the final, the Chinese Taipei fighter beat Juan Antonio Ramos from Spain to also make it to the final. This was Chu Mu-Yen's first senior world championships and went on from here to win the worlds in 2003 and also olympic gold in 2004 and bronze in 2008. Choi Yeon-Ho after winning gold in this event also had an amazing career winning the senior worlds three more times, he also earned the title of junior world champion before this one.
This fight is not their best as i feel they cancel each other out.

Dear focus on Taekwondo what's your explanation on how taekwondo competition fights change so much nowadays? Thanks.

How much time do we have? ...... I believe it’s changed because of Trying to stay in the Olympics , they don’t want knock outs blood etc on live tv. They want fast flowing fights- points not in the hands of the referees etc. I think they feel pressure from IOC. - do you agree? Or what do you feel happened?

@@FocusOnTaekwondo I think one reason that TKD lose its magic (and toughness) is the bad referees. And of course the reasons you wrote about. Also many instructors wanted TKD to look as a "sport"....Have a nice day.(excuse me for the latency of my answer but i saw your reply this morning🙂).

@@FocusOnTaekwondo I also remember an interview with a Korean master in Taekwondo Times stated that competition exists for the purpose of perfecting the art. I think top level Athletes/practicioners/disciples are "champions"...So competition for the sake of competition is not so OK in my opinion....

I don’t think it’s that. When the point system fell in place it seems the cut kick and it’s new style was beating this old school style even when they look worse. So many other old school instructors adopted it and threw it out to compete with everyone else. It will take a modern fighter to dare and train the old school way while manipulating the new school style.
As the sport changes the fighters dictate the style. The fighters will have to save it otherwise it will be a sweet memory instead of a legendary martial art!
