  • This method requires more work than the pure AI method but I think the colorization looks a lot better than simply using DeOldify.
I used a combination of ebsynth, photoshop, deepremaster, and deoldify (myheritage) in order to colorize this footage. Thank you to Garrett Gilchrist for his video series on this: • Colorization with EBSy...
Unfortunately I lost a lot of quality when I initially encoded the black and white video which is why the colorized video is not as sharp as the BW. I also made a few mistakes with the skin tone being a tad too dark and some colors looking off. I'm going to refine this method later and apply to more BW videos in the future.
Source is from BFI China on Film trailer which I can no longer find on the web. The only clip that I know the year of is the very first one, the rest are probably from the 1920s-1940s

That looks pretty good, as an implementation of my methods as discussed.
The second-to-last shot is a more difficult one which would have taken more work to make it really work.
I hope you are reintegrating the original, higher quality black and white source once you've completed your color work. This requires blending or opacity layers in your editing program (Premiere or After Effects, for example).

yep, i used black and white as luminosity but i didnt actually use the original black and white footage (I should've) I used clips that i had gotten from extracting frames which ended up making the BW video quality worse. I'll make sure not to make that mistake again.
I also was only able to use Myheritage/deoldify on one frame for each shot, so i had to extrapolate quite a lot of key frames which made some parts messy looking

For me, when using EBSynth, I rotoscope my Deepremaster output over defects to maintain high quality
