Thank you! The putting a flat edge on the top/bottom of the cleats was something I didn't think about. Now i know what thickness of wood is needed and how wide they need to be. I plan to use french cleats for wall cabinets I'm going to make for my bathroom.

🎉 thank you. You're the 1st I've viewed with detailed instructions & the music not causing a distraction. Tons of diy videos are made where the music is so loud or obnoxious that you don't listen to the purpose of the video. I would give you 100%. But, the part about the sharp edge is still not clear. So I'll give you a 98.9%. 😊.

The part about the vertical space between the rows was not clear. I'm not the brightest bulb, but probably not the only one who found it vague.

Superior video. Thank you very much! While you don’t need music for a video this good a little far in the background is ok as long as it’s not repetitive or distracting. Thanks again for a beautifully made video!

Is particle board strong enough for French cleats? I have a bunch of it leftover 😂

  • @ghandimauler

Is there any advantage if using a 2x4 vs. a 4 or 5 ply plywood for strength?
I suppose sheet is preferential because it will tend not to warp, cup, etc. if you are cutting the cleat itself and it's any length and you don't immediately put it up.
I'm looking at some form of french cleat to take the weight from 45 degree lumber supports for a shelf that I want to be able to hold a lot of weight.

What's the maximum width shelf a french cleat might support? 20cms, 30cms? 40cms?

Question for you: Can cleats lift up on one side if there's too much weight unevenly placed on the other side? I'm making a single 54" wide x 32" high unit for cube wall storage and will have a 30" metal cleat in the center. One concern my partner voiced is it lifting up if someone (like a kid) steps on one side, or puts a lot of weight only on one side. I haven't seen anyone anywhere on YT demonstrate what happens in this kind of scenario. I'm also just curious to know in general if a cleat can lift up in this way regardless of relative sizes. Thanks!

If the cleats span the whole distance as the shelf unit than I don’t see how it would lift as there’s no fulcrum (pivot point) for which the weight can act against.
In your case the cleats will not span the whole distance and the cleat itself can act as a pivot point making tipping possible.

Will this work with no Sheetrock? Just got a shed built with no Sheetrock and want to do this

You've probably got this done now, but as long as your cleats are screwed into the studs, you'll be fine. Really, adding the cleats and sinking fasteners into the studs is kind of a reinforcement side to side as well if you don't have any form of sheeting.
