This move makes sense for SFA, as how can you justify traveling to places where your fans base is not traveling to as much, when you have a better option available to you? The SEC got it right: having a regional conference and having a successful conference on the sports field.

Any chance of getting the WAC commissioner on to talk expansion?

Basically SFA waived the white flag. The schools in the UAC aspire to be in the FBS. The schools in the Southland don't. Two teams formerly in the UAC have already joined the FBS, and another two were actively considered by FBS conferences and barely missed the cut. If SFA is happy in the FCS, and doesn't mind losing SHS, then the decision that they just made makes sense. It's really about your goals rather than mere geography, which is just an excuse.

Southland is a better athletic conference than the WAC, and cheaper.

When SFA left a few years ago the WAC was hands down the better conference, especially in the sports that generate revenue! After all the departures it's a different story. If SFA still had the same leadership as they did a few years ago, I don't think they make the move back though.

@@jeremybuck5152 I can see your point bc ACU has a lot of OU, OSU, Tx, and Tx Tech players on thier roster. I see ACU winning the WAC.

The SLC is not the better conference. The rankings are close in some, but the WAC outranks the SLC in most every sport except for probably baseball. The UAC is definitely higher ranked than the SLC. In basketball, the WAC is way better than the SLC. Once GCU leaves, that will change some, but from top to bottom, the WAC is a way better basketball conference. The WAC does have a stability problem, but it also has a much better footprint and provides its schools much better exposure.

I thought SFA was pushing to join FBS

Maybe they can start winning again in the SLC. The WAC/UAC was too much.

Is it though? I mean I’m a Tarleton alum and our budget has tripled since joining the UAC in football same with Abilene Christian. Sounds like SFA just couldn’t afford it.
