First as a single father raising two sons on my own living paycheck to paycheck, I can’t afford Lego. So for 250 bucks from Amazon I purchased Mould King version. Not a bad set, there was a couple parts I did glue, head to neck joint, and feet to leg. For price I can’t complain.
I built the MK AT-AT and geared down the engine from 360 to 60 Rpm, I switched one of the studs that holds the legs to an axle (technics), that became much more sturdy, the legs don't fall off anymore. I also updated the feet so they don't fall off either. It was actually quite fun.
The problem with lego (besides the INSANE price difference) is that i spent time saving up for the star destroyer UCS set, and as soon as i had the money it was replaced with the venator. Now don’t get me wrong, i like the venator. But I spent a whole YEAR saving up. I really hate that lego retires sets so quickly. Mouldking may be slightly lesser quality, with less detail, but at least i can get their sets anytime at a fraction of the cost.
Yeeeeah, but the UCS Star Destroyer was available for 3 years; From 2019 until 2022. I think Lego is aware that the average person is going to need to save for these insane sets, which is why they have a much longer shelf time than the normal sets, which are usually only around for a year or two. Of course, the Star Destroyer was available for a shorter time than the UCS Millennium Falcon, which came out late 2017 and is still available, but the Falcon is $300+ more than the SD was too. Or they may be coming out with another SD UCS set. If you really want the UCS SD, some of the knock off sites still have them in stock.
Great video, thank you! I’d be interested in a follow up if you ever decide to modify the MK set to match Jhae’s original design. He used tires, and he used hinge bricks for the side panels not hinge plates. That fixes the gaps
Thanks for putting this video together, and for all the insightful details! I think the Mould King set is really hard to beat for the value- not that I dislike the Lego one, but I find it hard to justify a $800 price tag for something that has a VERY solid sub-$300 competitor. I also enjoy the tiling on MK's a lot better, I just wish Lego could have done the same. edit: okay those gaps are kind of killing me....
Thank you for the comment! Don't forget you can get the knock off version of the UCS AT-AT for about $275-$300 USD as well, so both are affordable. (I got the $800 Lego UCS only because this is my favorite Star Wars vehicle.)
Great review! The MK set seems like a great display piece. The price reflects the durability/playability of the set. For about 1/3 the price of the UCS lego AT-AT you get a full size minifigure scale set and even some improvements, but you lose the carefully crafted interior design.
I love the SNOT look of the Mould King. I’m working on modding the smaller Lego ATAT to look SNOT and it’s working out really expensive. I’m better off getting a Mould King. Thanks for the heads up.
I choose the mould king one and it was a pleasure looking into the box and nearly only seeing Grey pieces. And I like that the mould king one is mostly tiled. I dont care for star wars so It doesn't annoy me that its less accurate. And king bricks are good, but I prefer the mould king ones. And spending 700€ for the lego Model is waaay too much for me. Yes, definitely need to modify it to be sturdier. I've heard from a few people that it crashed off their shelves; the blue pins at the hips broke after about a year of holding the entire model up.
Thanks for taking the time to build both sets and put together this vid . Alot can be said for the Mould King version with the tiling and overall design and opinions will differ but i prefer the Lego AT AT . its got more right then wrong over the MK version like the neck detail and the rear for sure and the gaps although you cant see different colors , like Lego is famous for , is far too wide to be acceptable plus some of the part usage by MK especially in the legs look awkward and with Legos interior it makes this comparison a slam dunk for Lego putting aside pricing difference . But this is just an opinion situation ..
so the mould king version is a design by richboyjhae, a moc designer fairly prominent in the Lego community. I have built the version he sells out of bricks made by Lego however with all these similar brands the quality is becoming fairly similar if not identical. However the point I am trying to get to is I have built the original design by richboyjhae and it seems that mould king has taken some liberties to change the design slightly, but I can say the version I have while a bit less stable than the mould kind does not have these issues. The feet have built in massive tires to stop from sliding on two of the four feet and the gaps at the back are way less prevalent but I can see that is because it is built slightly different. The ankles on the original are a lot better looking, the reason they changed the design as far as i can tell is because the connection between the ankles and feet are not good at all and causes a lot of dramas moving around. With that said the model does come with its own issues but none of them are aesthetic so it stays in its display case for most of its life.
Ok, first thing. Anyone buying alternate brands to build should know that IT's NOT LEGO! There are some issues with every build I've done. So be prepared to innovate as you build. I enjoy this. At first it was frustrating. But now, I just find work-arounds and ways to make the build better. So take your time and don't worry when you think they've missed a part. It's always in there somewhere lol AND, this model cost me $210 US delivered. Not $750.
Those gaps on the back of the Mould King would have me very disappointed... that shouldn't be there for what you spend on them, and would be an easy fix in the design phase.
The lego version cost about the same as a Playstation 5 and Xbox series S combined. You could even get an entry level high tier electric guitar for the same price. If I wanted one of these I'd go for the Mould King despite its flaws. I would never fund Lego at their prices.

The way the side door opens on the Lego version is actually more screen accurate. You do see the door swing open outwards in the movie at the moment the first AT-AT falls down. As for which I prefer, the Lego version no question. It is superior in every way in my opinion, and I'd rather have 1 really good looking and functional AT-AT for $800 rather than a $200 static version that looks kinda ugly to me.
