  • Hey there and welcome back to artichoke dip. In this video we’re going to get into journaling for your solo RPG sessions. It does not always have to be a chore, but with a few simple tips, you can find a much simple way to be able to record your sessions, organize them and utilize your gaming journal to work to your benefit and try to avoid the marsh that I think most solo table top gamers find themselves, and which is not enough Too much or no chronological order to anything leaving the gamer very confused. I hope to put a lot of this confusion to rest and in this video I really hope you take something away from it that can help you with your solo table, top gaming or as a dungeon, master help you organize and be able to keep notes better for your future game sessions With that being said game on my friends

That Baldur's Gate analogy is very useful in visualizing what parts of your adventure should be narrow focused and which should be wide. Although personally I will never forget "Kobold" on level 1 of the Naskel Mines 😆

I have a large collection of office supplies and have started buying fountain pens, French paper and Japanese mechanical pencils, I do almost every gamming record by hand, once I start to type it onto my computer I loose interest fast. Thank you for the video it was entertaining and informative.

Another good topic & video Arti! I like these practical looks at specific things that go into solitaire. This stuff is more helpful than just focusing on the latest game system & products which YT is now primarily.
I finished an adventure recently where I heavily journaled. It was interesting for awhile but I got tired of all the writing & by the last session was at the table top & only journaled the highlights after. It was a good experiment & it did flesh out things in more detail but once I start journaling I tend to go overboard with character dialog & recording every die roll. It was cool for slowing things down, stripping away mechanisms that aren't really needed, which made it very portable. Only used a d20 for resolution & world questions so a pencil, the journal & the d20 was easy to take with me. I'm glad I tried it but I don't want to go back to journaling that heavily. Not anytime soon.

Thanks for this man! I really appreciate it. If you ever do a part 2, I'd love to see a casual flip through of all your journals. Would be like a trip down memory lane :D

Ahh journaling is truly the best! My session notes from group gaming are full of drawings of the most important events and for some reason it's the only thing that makes me remember whats going on

Strange choice of timeline bookends, as World War 2 actually started in September 1939. Apart from that, the points you make are insightful and should be helpful for anyone just starting to find their way in RPGs.

    Analog gaming is refreshing.
I’m slowly building up a game-world zettlekasten. I think it’s a very useful technique more gamers should try tapping into.

I learned that lesson when using an online journaling app. I never use computer apps that store the info online, localized data stored on your HD is a must.

I started dot-pointing but now have one-and-a-half 96-page A4 exercise books filled with a rough handwritten story with dialogue, my workings, and maps. These have created, in my opinion, an epic story of adventure, comradery, and tragedy, all the while filling my world with locals, NPCs, encounters, and details. All this and with no end in sight, and...with Maxwell Smarts' wise words..." and loving it!" Thank you for your video.

Do you journal differently for different games systems or when playing a system you haven't played before? I found that I was recording all events when playing IronSworn - i think because it was my first solo game, but also because I didn't know the system and had to track mechanics as I went.
