0x0024 - 3D Printed Belt for CD Player

  • I decided I wanted to try to make my own belt rather than wait for one to ship.
    So while the belt works for now the real question is how long it will hold up. I'll probably do an update on this in a few months to share how it's going.
    This really wasn't the best material to do this with. If this fails I'll try to get something much more malleable and hopefully somewhat elastic to replace ts.

    Okay, now THIS is /awesome/. The more I watch videos using 3D printers, the more I want to get one, especially since they're so cheap now, relatively speaking.
    It's like, I've been watching Ben Heck too and now I want to get into electronics a whole lot more.

      Yep, i have one, and even a shitty printer is an awesome thing to have.

    "I installed an SSD into a cheap computer and installed a weird OS onto it. You?
    "I 3D printed a belt for my CD player"
    I give you, the best pair to ever come to TH-cam

    My first CD player was very similar to this. Developed a bad belt, but fortunately Radio Shack at the time did repairs and I enjoyed it right up to the time I had to sell it along with my 4-in-1 home stereo unit.

    1st off there used to be outfits carrying 100's or 1,000's of various belts (graded multiple diameters) like this for somewhere between 10-25 dollars. For repair techs, Electronix, was one. And there are a number of tricks. To make the belt more elastic, and soft soak in hot water with a little clove oil, tighter, and more springy with some vinegar. You can also slice the belt at an angle and glue it back together with super glue to decrease the diameter. Line up the splice with magic tape on a sheet of polyethylene and let the glue wick into the joint. You can also fabricate a belt by taking the old belt (reduced by the splicing technique ), make a one sided mold in dental plaster, and then filing with pure silicone caulk glue. Does the 3D printer allow You to put different materials into the hopper?... or does that F*%k it up? pure silicone is good for belts.. Art/Craft/Sculpture materials suppliers used to carry a nice assortment of latex rubber products to be painted on a sculpture to make a three D mold. I suspect the latex would be good fro three D printing as it is water soluble, but shrinks, and you have to let layers dry.

      You can still get bundles of belts online for relatively little cost. This would be more useful for strange shaped belts. But I think it would be nice to be able to make this work reliably to just have belts on demand.
      The chemical makeup of the material I'm using (which is likely some kind of TPU) is very different than rubber belts. There may be a way to alter it's characteristics, but I haven't looked into it.
      There isn't a hopper on 3D printers, they use spools of material that have a very tight diameter tolerance (+/- ~0.05mm). You can get a hopper and extruder to make your own filament, but it has to be a material that doesn't chemically change after going through a phase change(like rubber which can only be melted once). So you are still fairly limited in what materials you can use.

      Not correct, 3d printed material last longer than rubber.

    I've had this issue with a cheapo semp dvd player, after like 8 years of work.
    I fixed it with those elastics that people use in cables, money (the office yellow ones) folded up.
    Other thing i done that could work is to take a stripe of fabric, take the measures and then make a belt of it, you have to make this one very tight to the pulleys.
    And there are even those elastics that come with toys, many times dolls, that are basically the same as the ones that use to come with such devices.
    Oh and if some words here dont make sense, is due to my rusty english.

    Printing a looser belt and then using something heat shrink to create a rubber surface on the pulleys that the belt would contact might work. I'm tempted to try that.

    I've got a lovely JVC XL-V444 which seems to check all the boxes -- fully featured and with an improved display and higher quality tray. If you see one in the wild, I recommend it! There's an XL-V555 as well which must be at least as nice.

    The cracking plastics could well be the grease! The Philips CDM-9 loading mechs had a similar issue which caused the teeth to strip of the loading gear. My own Arcam A5+ failed in this way... fortunately it only cost about £7 to repair.

      Si1983h These wierd gears won't be around forever. A 3D printer can remake these gears and keep old equipment running. I hope to learn more about repairing circuits so I can keep my retro stuff operating.

    Huh. I didn't even consider this option. Gonna have to try it on my Walkman I'm currently repairing. Have a belt on order already, but I do have a roll of TPU on hand.

    3D printing really is going to be a boon for maintaining old technology.
    Suggestion for the future: Print gears to replace the belt, stripped teeth are easier to fix than a belt in the long term thanks again to 3D printing.

    Neat approach to problem. But one simple fix would be to buy O-ring for proper diameter for about meter and simply glue yourself a new belt. Actually it's very possible that you could happen to get complete belt from generic O-ring set for few measly cents. Look for car part shops or even better, companies that sell supplies for industrial maintenance.

      I think he knew this but didn't want to wait for delivery, plus I believe the idea is to discover what (if anything) works long term as a 3D printed medium for belts. More out of curiosity and "future proofing" in case belts cease to be as easy to get I suppose. I did think of the O-ring material myself since that's ridiculously cheap to get.

    I wonder if there's some sort of rubberizing spray to increase the belt friction, like the stuff you spray on tile floors to stop rugs slipping underneath you.

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      poderr Silicone spray does the job but it wouldn't last very long on a belt that's constantly flexing.

      @eduardoavila646 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Microbios75 Ubuntu? Arch? Those really have that issue. I've heard that with proprietary drivers (amd or nvidia) this is a issue. I had this issue when amd still supported my radeon 8850m in linux. Maybe try changing to the opensource drivers (if you are in the proprietary one) or to the proprietary if you're in the opensource.

    im a little confused on why the tape is their when it didn't print on the tape can someone enlighten me on that reason

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The flexible filament will bond to the smooth print surface and damage it. I was originally going to print only that but right after I put the tape on I realized I should try printing out in PLA first which is perfect on the smooth surface. So I just printed the PLA to the side of the tape.
