Adam is over here showing us how to live a rhythmic life! Harmony and scales are the raw materials. You can't build a house without raw materials. But rhythm is how you put it altogether--rhythm is the delivery to the audience--rhythm is the synthesis and execution of actual music. So without rhythm, there is no actual music--we should all let that sink in. Adam, what you are talking about here is DIRECTLY related to my question about rhythmic sandwiches--the "poly want a... rhythm" episode. The way you group eighth notes can suggest different meters, especially odd groupings that push and pull on the original meter. Poly rhythm can also be suggested with groupings and accents. Another strategy is playing with a quarter note triplet or half note triplet pulse against the regular pulse--especially in 4/4. Or feeling other types of tuplets against the pulse. That effects all those regular quarter notes and eighths that you play within the measure--totally changes your pocket. There's a whole universe of rhythm out there--and we all owe it to the music we play to tap into that universe!
Hello! I loved this concept of "no barlines". I agree the barlines are an illusion and I feel the melody of the improv is so intertwined with the written rythm, that 4/4, or other subdivisions, is relative. The phrases with high notes, as well as the rests, mark the rythm... Thanks!
