RIP Steve , such a legend
Rock In Peace Steve.
Knocking around in the "long hot summer of '76 this was one of the sounds of "then".
And it always "makes me smile"
RIP Steve thanks for being part of our lives
RIP Steve Harley, your Sebastian at Newcastle City Halls will never be bettered
Long hot summers in the 70's, kicking around on push bikes until it got dark.
It just makes me smile.
Its a great song, RIP Steve Harley
God bless Steve Harley 🙏 R.I.P.
saw him live many times, i liked him, made me smile. god bless steve.
Possibly, one of the greatest tunes ever.
An all time favourite for me ! .. Don't know much at all of his other work, but this alone makes him a legend .. RIP Steve.
Judy Teen was a good song to try
@@telstar4772 Just checked it out, and yes it's quite a cool song .. Quirky, catchy, and a bit different .. Reminded me a little bit of some of Jona Lewie's work .. Nice suggestion !
He was truly great. Saw him a few times. Sorely missed.
Thanks for paying respects to Steve Harley. This is a song of my youth, it went to number one in British charts in 1975. The song came after the band Cockney Rebel broke up, and Steve wrote this song about the split, now as Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel!
Possibly my all time favorite artist. Steve Harley always came across as such a lovely man. I met him once in Bradford at a live gig. He was just in the audience and only i noticed him, with his cool hat . I sidled over and said hi, and we ended up over the road having a pint together.
Rest in peace, you beautiful soul. ❤
Sad times, one of my older brothers was a massive fan, so i grew up hearing Steve.
Great and unique singer, try, Mr Soft.
A wonderful man who will be greatly missed.
" To British For North America " .. That's the explanation for the only modest at best success this band enjoyed on this side of the Atlantic. Brilliant harmonies highlight a brilliant song. Ace !
Mr Supercool has left us, for the big skyband. I love this revenge song against the original band, who left him after being offered more money. All gone and run away, for only metal, what a bore! He had the last laugh 😊
One of my favorite songs across all genres. Real feel good song.
One of my favourite songs of the 70s. One of those songs that I can remember first hearing it.
Great entertainer - great band and a fabulous catalogue of superb songs
Fantastic song reminds me of long summer days down the beach 76, 77. RIP Steve😊
I saw them a few times back in the 70's. always a great show R.I.P Steve. Don't forget Paul Jeffreys, the bass player, murdered on Pan Am 103 1988 😢
I’m just seeing this notification about his passing now.I love this song Rip
The film I recall it being a part of is The Full Monty, from the 1990s x
thanks for insrping!Ll
Remember this song well. I was a young teenie when it came out. GREAT song, very catchy. 😁😁
Nice tribute to Steve Harley guys and as you say he lives on in his music. 'Judy teen' was a particular favourite of mine. Cheers
A boyfriend I had in the early 70's introduced me to Cockney Rebel. We'd sit in his room listening to songs like ''Sebastian'', while high on dope and whatever substances silly hippy timewasters would indulge in. The first couple of records were great. I have nothing but praise for this number.
RIP Steve Harley
Massive fan of Steve Harley so much more than “make me smile “
Cockney Rebel have some great stuff. "Sebastian" and "Mr Soft" are a couple of others but this was their big Chart one.
Write one immortal song and your legacy is assured. I love the weary laconic sneer of the vocal which I think points the way towards John Lydon just a few years later.
Thank you, Chris and Cynthia for honouring the music of the late Steve Harley, he was born Stephen Malcolm Ronald Nice on 27 February 1951. Harley's first job was as a journalist, he intentially got fired by not wearing a tie to work and growing his hair long. He formed Cockney Rebel in 1972, their debut single "Sebastian" was a hit in Europe, but it failed to chart in the UK. "Sebastian" was a brilliant and lavish rock opera which starts off quietly and builds up in volume towards the end with full orchestration, sadly it went straight over the heads of the UK record buying public. "Sebastian" is well worth a listen.
Cockney Rebel's "Mr Soft" was used in the UK tv advertisement for Trebor Soft Mints. The non album track "Judy Teen" became Cockney Rebel's first charting single in 1974 after the failure of "Sebastian" to chart.
One of the 1st singles I ever bought and always brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it. Lovely acoustic guitar solo really tops it off!
Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were a huge part of the best years of my life (apart from having a shitty boyfriend lol). So sad he’s passed RIP lovely man 💔💔💔
R.I.P Steve Harley.......Cockney Rebel were a fantastic band ,every musician was a master of his art. Simon Fox went on to drum with Be Bop Deluxe. Saw Steve in England around 5 years ago and he was brilliant...just him on guitar, a guy on an electric violin and a drummer.....amazing night,.....quite folky and Dylanesque.! A real "working" musician. You really need to listen to "Sebastian" by Cockney Rebel....its stunning...a classic......sad,sad day😔
The song was written by Lennon & McCartney and was in the film The Full Monty
Incorrect. The song was written by Steve Harley.
@@Llydrwydd sorry I just realised that I was getting it confused with Here Comes the Sun which was a theme for the BBC program Holiday
No problem. Another correction though (sorry to be a pedant) but that was by George Harrison. And I've just corrected my own mistake, I originally put Hartley instead of Harley, and he definitely had no connection with the famous jam makers as far as I know!
@@Llydrwydd all know was he used to have contacts in Newmarket stables and that won me quite a few quid.
Had to look that one up not being a horseracing afficionado ! Martin Harley or maybe the horse 'Cockney Rebel' ?
It's great that you did this and got around to this band and artist, it's just sad it being under these circumstances, R.I.P. Steve. 😢 Steve and the band had a number of hits in the '70s, such as:
"Judy Teen",
"Mr Soft",
"Here Comes The Sun" (cover of The Beatles song),
"Sebastian",
"Psychomodo",
"Mr Raffles",
"(I Believe) Love's a Prima Donna".
There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.
Perhaps you might do, "The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun" and covers by 'Steve Harley and The Cockney Rebel' and 'Nina Simone' for Wednesday this week?
Heard this song for the first time watching the Full Monty. Great movie and great song.
This has got to be one of the best viewed and commented / liked tracks on yer channel for a wee while .. 👀
Thrilled ✊
👍🏴
Thank you for doing Steve. I loved Cockney Rebel and named a cat after one of their songs - Sebastian. Steve was a wonderful songwriter and fabulous, charismatic frontman. Very distinctive vocal style, as you said, also found on the original single version of 'Phantom of the Opera' - yup, that one!
❤ Steve Harley, rest up precious brother, it's almost every day now i hear of a music legend or tv or movie stars, from my youth , who sadly passed away, i suppose it goes with getting auld, lol, sorry to be morbid, Steve Harley and cockney rebel's cover of George Harrison's " hear comes the sun" was brilliant, well worth a listen 🏴 happy healthy peace ✌️
Fir folk my age this is a classic and a must sing along n tap toes to banger !
Yes it was rereleased a few times n hit the charts all 3 times in the 70’s in the uk at least . He had a “unique “ voice and phrasing , but it fitted this song brilliantly .
As Sandy 303 mentioned yesterday , most folk just take this song at face value as a cheery song , it’s not 😅.. it’s a bitter swipe at his band mates who let him down .
Super glad you took this nudge from the subscribers and played this all time classic , it’s very much appreciated and enjoyed ✊ loved both tracks tonight , I’m going to bed s happy chap - cheers 🍻
👍🏴
I ayewys put him in wi Roxy Music and Mott The Hoople.
@@SPKdesign1 I always think 1975 tbh
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering It was aboot 75 wasn't it?
@@SPKdesign1 aye I’m sure if they 👌
👍🏴
I forgot
A fantastic intro.
Just enough time for the boys in the bar to close up and join in the fun , none of whom can sing a note but that’s the whole point.
Duran Duran covered it... as well as Suzi Quatro... who is an australian singer famous for playing Leather Tuscadero (Pinky Tuscaderos cousin) on Happy Days... also famous for the australian song Stumblin' In
Steve Harley used to host " Sounds of the 70s " on BBC Radio Two, when he found out that the show was being given to radio legend Johnny Walker, he was the first person to congratulate Johnny. Both guys were good friends.
Great band, please do more from them, especially ' The mad mad moonlight ' ' Judy Teen' and ' Mr Soft' .
I've always liked this song i never knew who it was but i like it
Judy Teen was the hit which made a great impact on the British charts in 1974. So different at the time. Mr Soft is another great single. Thanks.
Sad news. One of my favourite ever songs. I always sing along. The story of the break up of the previous incarnation of the band. A hint of Dylan in the vocals, I think.
Linda Lewis, Liza Strike, Tina charles, Yvonne Keeley on BV's.
That's quite a line-up.
@@delorangeade I like to know who they were, most don't care ;)
@@stephenhowell5611 I like to know as well, although I don't always remember who did what unless I actually own the albums and read the credits.
I’m very familiar with Linda Lewis and especially Tina Charles who was a proper fox to my 13yo self 😅.
Always good to know these things , cheers 🍻
👍🏴
The first album I ever brought (1973/4) was Pychomodo by Cockney Rebel. I have been buying Steve Harley's music ever since and saw him in concert 3 or 4 times.
Steve Harley performed a killer version of this song on Rockwiz (Australia) it was exceptional. Cheers.
Yeah whenever I hear or think of this song, my mind goes to that performance
It's a really sad day. The first setting i heard by cockney rebel was Mr soft. Back then Steve Harley's delivery was fabulous. The song Sebastien was also a major high point. I saw him perform only last year. Another of my teenage idols has gone😢
This song started out as a slow bluesy number. Steve's producer, Alan Parsons (yes, that Alan Parsons) suggested it be sped up, with the ooh, la, la's being added etc. Despite the happy title, it's not a fun song. It's about three of his band members who demanded to be able to write songs for the band - despite them being hired on the basis that Steve was the sole songwriter. When Steve didn't cave in, they left. Only the drummer - Stu Elliott - remained. If you listen to the lyrics, you can see he is having a shot at his former bandmates. One of the three members who left - Paul Jeffreys - was killed in the Lockerbie disaster in 1988. He and his wife were flying out for their honeymoon.
My suggestion was Judy Teen because I was sure that you would know this song. This is a real banger.
RIP Mr Nice.
Produced by Steve Harley and Alan Parsons! Bass by George Ford and drums by Stuart Elliott, who both played on the brilliant Year Of The Cat album by Al Stewart which was also produced by Alan Parsons.
the guitar break was played by jim cregan who used to go out with singer, linda lewis!! jim then went on to lay for rod stewart!! he did a great guitar solo on'stone cold sobre'!!!
This was used in the Full Monty film.
Great scene with the boys in job club kicking a soccer ball.
@@DJ-bj8ku Yep, at 49min 02sec in the film.
timeless flight is a splendid album and well worth a spin band were uber skilled
Saw them at a festival in Esbjerg, Denmark in 1994. It also featured Suzi Quatro, Bonnie Tyler, Electric Light Orchestra Part II, Smokie, Status Quo and headliner Deep Purple (with Joe Satriani on guitar).
Number 1 in February 1975 in the UK. There was a kind of punk sensibility about the band which pre-dated the arrival of punk in 1976. "Judy Teen" is well worth a listen also.
This song was featured in two late 90's films , The Full Monty & Velvet Goldmine.
Then, it was The Full Monty. We absolutely love that movie!
steve harley appeared on the west end stage in 'phantom of the opera' around 1990 i believe!
He had a great voice saw him a couple of months ago he was brilliant then as well
If you like unusual voices listen to Virginia Plain by Roxy Music. An amazing song
We love Virginia Plain. We discovered it on this channel.
Cockney rebel. Bass player
This was a HUGE hit in Australia. So sad..
Lol, there's a lot of songs I know of that I didn't know I knew 🤔, so had a lot of "Oh that one" moments 😅.
But I love this song so much and can actually fool people into thinking it's Steve Harley singing it, because I have a deep range and at my best, can be very elastic. Probably because for most of my life, I've been doing take offs. Hasn't always been a good thing, as it took a while for me to find my own voice and tone.
RIP Steve Harley 😇
Mr Soft and Judy Teen were early singles.I think Sebastian was their best song
rip Steve Harley.
saw him live 3 years ago at the Robin 2, Bilston , West Midlands . A wonderful evening. He introduced this song as his "pension fund "
But how the years pass !
I was working in London in March (1975), and danced to this great pop song at the long gone Sundown Disco , Tottenham Court Road London. It was number 1 in the UK singles chart at the time (late Feb/March)
I just left you a question on a DD reaction about Wed covers & it's actually for this song.
He was so unique, cool & fun.
And I absolutely adore this song.
This is a live version fr/ Brit Music TV show (Top of the Pops) where he messed up the lyrics & like a champ didn't show any embarrassment & kept singing… I thought it actually made the performance even more fun watching him having to re-sing the line while you can see band members looking & smiling at each instance, but while continuing to play w/o missing a beat…
th-cam.com/video/OQ2K4qRABCM/w-d-xo.html
(In case you wanna watch to Make You Smile)
After learning from an Interview on YT about his life & early med struggles w/ polio, it made me look into him more & I just kept admiring him further, esp his outlook on life & challenges; particularly given my own struggles being partially disabled, tho more fully of late, primarily fr/ my uncommon genetic disorder: #EDS (#hEDS type), & all its comorbidities affecting most systems, & then the needless war on intractable pain patients & the med treatment we had for decades w/o any mjr incidents, taken away to decrease prescriptions (which happened via threatening Drs, yet it still nvr decreased substance use/ODs/addiction/death over past decade -except w/i the Chronic pain community)
Ugh, sry… Anyway, seeing him not slow down, work hard, & not be ashamed of his limitations is very inspirational.
Here's 1 of several articles I read about him talking thru the struggles & going way beyond overcoming them, if interested:
www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/441250/Cockney-Rebel-rocker-Steve-Harley-My-heavy-flu-was-polio
Thanks for sharing this reaction. Now back to the original DD reaction I replied to & see what you think …
Sad news, this is Steve’s most famous song but his “Mr Soft” was catchy and part of a tv SoftMint advert which was very trippy.
He also performed with Sarah Brightman in Phantom of the Opera before Broadway show and was replaced by Michael Crawford
R.I.P Steve 😔
Great to see you reacting to old great hits of the past.
German music producer Frank Farian had released an album in the late 80's together with a bunch of his studio musicians under the name 'Far Corporation' with cover versions of well-known Classic Rock songs, including Steve Harley's song 'Sebastian', which was released as a Single.
Farian too had died only recently, and he's best known as the producer for Milli Vanilli and Boney M, in whose music he also sang those signature deep male vocals - with dancer Bobby Farell miming to them during TV performances 😅
Far Corporation also covered Zed Leppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven', and it's a crack up to suddenly hear that Boney M voice pop up at one point 😄
Maybe also do a Frank Farian (pronounced "Frunk Fahreeyahn") tribute video!? I'd recommend Boney M's song 'Steppenwolf'
😀👍
Sad to hear of his passing, If you only listen to one more of their songs I would recommend Sabastian which is epic, their biggest hit was Judy Teen as far as I know.
Great suggestions!
thank you!
btw, jim cregan used to 'play' for rod stewart, not 'lay' for him!!! i didn't hit 'p' properly!!!
He wasn’t a Cockney.
But he was a great musician.
Deptford I think?
Or somewhere down that way?
This is one of the all time London old school pub jukebox tunes.
We used to regularly take over our end the bar and hammer this out about 15 handed on a Saturday night, three sheets to the wind, much to the amazement of the tourists and self proclaimed hipsters.
Swiftly followed up by The Kinks.
Such a great tune reminds me of my older sisters
the movie was the full monty, its been in others too that I don't know
The first line up of Cockney Rebel (not the one we see on this video) was my favorite band in 1973-74 and their two albums ("The Human Menagerie" and "The Psychomodo") are total masterpieces. Unfortunately, the band splitted and this song is about the reasons of this split (mainly money). If some later albums from Steve Harley were fine, he never reached the genius of his debuts. Sad he died anyway. Of course "Make Me Smile" was his major hit even if it's far from being his best song. PS. He was actually a Dylan fan.
I was 11 when this exploded in Australia circa '75. I thought he was really hot, but my stupid friends couldn't see it because they were too caught up in Rollermania. RIP
Thank you for the reaction.
The song is a dig at his ex band-mates who up & left him to apparently pursue a different musical direction..? Harley formed this new band & obviously had the last laugh...👍😅
Check out celluloid heroes live absolutely brilliant.🇦🇺
Cynthia not good enough you must know everything!!! Now 😊 and when you know everything let us in on it 😁
I'm sorry i forgot my manners again firstly kia Ora hello and secondly let us in on it PLEASE ✌️ Much aroha ( love 💗) to you guys and the GOONIES
Saw them live in Buxton Derbyshire UK. A great time.
the back up vocals are from his girfriend yvonne keeley and another famous singer Tina Charles. steve had a relation with yvonne i think 10 years i am not shore how long exacly.
With this song, Steve was pissing on his former band mates who wanted to ditch the band's music style and start playing heavy metal. The first iteration of Cockney Rebel broke up over it.
Even one of Steves backing singers in this song "Made it Big" on her own.
Check out Tina Charles - Dance little Lady dance.
I did NOT know that , cheers btw . She had a monster hit here certainly with “ I love to love “ . Havent heard her name for years 😀
👍🏴
Great reaction, definitely “Judy Teen” next 👍
If you’ve ever seen the movie “The Full Monty” you’ve heard this song.
He was great
Song about other members of the Group wanted to write songs but Steve told them to take a running jump , listen to first verse 'broken every code' etc.
His first 4 albums were/are genius....seriously.
The song was used in the film the “The Full Monty”
That's one of our favourite movies.
@@hanierfamily Yes its a good film
Do you know they have done a follow-up to the 1997 film of the same name. It premiered on 14 June 2023 on FX on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ in the United Kingdom and internationally
Have you guys seen a film call "The Commitments"
Chris said he saw it once a long time ago. I (Cynthia) haven't seen it.
@@hanierfamily It's a must see Cynthia if you get the chance.
Its has great music and it is a very funny film a bit like The full Monty kind of humor
must to be able to pick it up on DVD on the cheap as its a few years old now! "1991"
Dead as well? Damn
You have got to try Mr. Soft by Cockney Rebel.
A tribute to Steve Harley?! Then you say you've never heard him before?! Isn't it great when a bandwagon just rolls by, ready for you to jump on?
Guess you got up on the wrong 🤷 side of the bed 🛌 this morning ! Unfortunately , in your haste to be unpleasant you didn't take into consideration the nature of this channel. It's clearly not for you & for that , I am grateful.
We did this because it was asked for by our regular viewers
You rude jerk 😅.. they hadn’t heard of him , they responded to requests from myself and others asking for this song as a way to let the rest of us enjoy one last time this classic tune . What’s your problem btw ? Names new to the regulars are normally welcomed and encouraged to join in .. your names new to me and your first post I’m aware of is trying to be a smart arse with the hosts ? .. do one , mug

Definitely check out their song Sebastian it's amazing.
