      @Ella Enchanted I'm not sure there's a good way to colour for colourblindness if you're using all the colours though, they get so mixed up around the grid.

    • @ellaenchanted2399
      @ellaenchanted2399 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sageandsound While that is definitely an issue, taking steps to make sure that at least initially that isn't an issue would make it easier overall, I'd imagine. That plus the verbal explanation and the written #s allows for a nice balance to help keep things straight. While I'm not colorblind, I know the particular shade they have for orange makes it difficult for me when Red and Orange are directly next to each other. If they don't start out that way, however, it's much easier to keep them straight when we do get to boxes where they're adjacent than if it starts close together and then gets separate.

    Just noticed a two-cell renban on a domino is functionally equivalent to a white kropki the same way a two-cell thermo on a domino is functionally equivalent to an inequality symbol or a two-cell killer cage with a 5 or 10 is a V or X. Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically" "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky". Still makes me laugh every time and I have seen that episode dozens of times.

The partially coloured completed grid demonstrates the solution path nicely. Rather than spending the time to fill in the colours when they no longer are needed for the solve, use them to give a recap of the solve at end of the video.

    • @oakleyg2870
      @oakleyg2870 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alanclarke4646 Starting with the thermo in box 3, you can see that the numbers drop by one each time you rotate over one thermo counterclockwise. So that one that starts in box 3 has to start with at least 5. But if you try starting it with a 5 you see that the shortened thermo in box 9 prevents you from putting 4 consecutive digits on that associated renban line. The only option left is to start the thermo in box 3 with a 6 (which is the highest it can be). Then rotate counterclockwise to the other thermos and drop each starting point by one number.

    In the beginning it struck me that the 4 thermo/renban boxes are placed symmetrically. Only the one in box 6&9 deviates from the other 3 with its 3-cell thermo. Usually a puzzle creator will prefer a complete symmetrical setup but here that is not possible: every 4-cell thermo forces the next one (CCW rotation) to be lower. So with 4 of them that would result in an Escher staircase.

    • @Raven-Creations
      @Raven-Creations 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that at first, but actually after a full rotation, there's enough separation that there wouldn't be a clash. In the finished solution, you could have 2345 or 1234 on the lowest, and 6789 on the highest. My guess is the setter tried this, and it either couldn't be made to work, or it made the puzzle too easy. It certainly made the logic a bit more interesting.

    You missed a bit of magic on r2c3 and its effect on box 2. Once you have most of the right side of the box colored in, r2c3 is equivalent to r3c5. This is because it cant be consecutive with itself (r1c4), it can’t be in the same row as itself (r2c4), and it can’t be higher than itself on its own thermo(r3c4). That allows you to put 3 into both cells by matching up pencil marks

      The sad thing is that he even remarked that he had a 678 triple. He then forgot to remove the 7 from the 47 cell, and accidentally included the 4 in his pencil marking.

    I started out by mixing up thermometers with arrows, which actually led to some cool logic (every four-cell 'arrow' has to have a 1 and a 2 on the non-renban cells, which allowed for some digits to be placed in the middle box). I realised my mistake before too long though :(

    Great puzzle. I want to take a second to thank Cane_Puzzles for disambiguating the number-color relation fairly early before the final cleanup. It made filling in the grid a lot less mechanically challenging. (I'm not trying to call anyone out by name on this. Especially not twototenth.)

    Really nice puzzle. Simon could have kept going with the coloring I think and doing more pairs/triples to help himself out. Not sure why he just did the one blue/yellow/orange triple in box 6 and then refused to do any others.

    I'd to thank you for NOT coloring during the solve once you resolved the colors to digits. Before you resolve the digits, coloring makes total sense, but once you have real digits, coloring for its own sake often makes the incomplete puzzle harder to scan.

    my solve time is 36 minutes.
    its a fun puzzle with weird logic which I liked. what helps is to color everything because 3 thermometers have to be consecutive and the renban lines next to the thermometers makes some beautiful logic where you can use 6 different colors, that represent 6 different digits, along the thermo/renban lines. then you use the second digit of box7-8 thermo, which has to be placed on the renban in box9. and that digit will get pressured a lot which will result in getting a lot of other digits because the thermos/renban combo is consecutive and really strong. after that its normal sudoku and using the other smaller renban lines/thermometers.
    in short: it was a fun solve and I recommend you give it a try

    Can someone help me? When Simon was doing the lower right renban and thermo he figured that red was on the renban, but didn't consider it for being on r6c7, which it can! How do you disambiguate that if you consider it?
    Edit: Never mind, I figured it out like 2 seconds after posting :')

    Quite a beautiful puzzle.
    For some reason by puzzles like this one I like to work fully in colours and no numbers.even if I know the numbers already. There is something satisfying to double tap all colours and full on the numbers all in one go.

    Simon (38:17): "Ooh, I've got a 6-7-8 triple here... so in this column I need 1, 4, *7,* and 9"
    *pencil marks 149 in r1c9 and not 3*
    40:47 "now that's a 4 by sudoku..."
    *Ironically mistypes 3 but then "corrects" it to 4*
    Pays for his mistake at 41:03 XD

    Hey, I have a question about the Sven's SudokuPad app: You put the link for the puzzle into the description and it leads to the website which has the same interface as the app. There is a "Import Puzzle" Function in the app, but unfortunately I haven't been able to successfully to import any sudoku. I wonder if somebody was able to use that function and could help me out, because I like solving on the phone the most and I would also like to save the puzzles on the app.

    • @AlRoderick
      @AlRoderick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You follow the link to the puzzle in the web version of the software and at the top there's a link that says "play in sudoku pad". That goes to a landing page that includes another button plus some links to the app stores to download the app, if you click the link on that landing page it should open the app on your phone and prompt you to save the puzzle after which you can play it offline in the app.

    Why could simon exclude that the renban in box 5 is 8 & 9 with green in the Center of box 5 becoming an 8? Probably this would lead to some trouble later, but at this point I did not get this deduction ?

    How do we know that the line in the middle box is a 12 and not an 89?

    • @RealGrouchy
      @RealGrouchy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The highest number on the thermos (in r3c6) must appear in box 8 in column 5, because we know that it isn't along the thermo in box 8. In box 5, it must be in column 4. That number must be either an 8 or a 9, and whichever it is it cannot be on either spot on the line in box 5. Therefore the line must be a 12 pair.

    I've seen solvers, not just Simon, consistently do logic & eliminations just to disregard all their work by simultaneous fill of remaining triples & quads.
    Perhaps I'm nit-picking, but this common tendency drives me batty. It is like we are reinventing the wheel and disregarding all previous logic, often hard won.
    There is no "efficiency" in such indiscriminate use of this computer function, especially when it hampers the path of the solve, as it often does.
    Usually Simon finds an alternate, more difficult path... but often that little tic stymies progress completely. If hand done, this pitfall would be rarer, I think.
    That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the approach Simon took to breaking in on this fascinating puzzle.
    The "error" occurred when pencil marking the triple in box 6, which then impeded logic on boxes 4 & 5. No big deal; he found another way. And finally addressed it when 6 was placed in box 9.
    But I could predict from the second he put 3 possibles in a bi-colored cell, the oversight was going to persist for most of the solve.

      Agreed, and it's so easily fixed by entering the center marks, paring them down to match the corner marks, then removing the corner marks, rather than deleting everything then entering the n-ple
