Arbaaz is so underrated, I played a couple of games with a proxy deck the other night and I kept burning the table super quick... with a couple of doublers like Solphim, Roaming Throne, Elsh Norn, Gandalf, etc and you start dealing 2, 4, 8, etc every time you cast a little artifacts? slap lifelink on it with Shadowspear, Collar, Caduceus, etc and you'll be easily at a spot where you deal 4 gain 13 with every Historic permanent entering (including lands!). My tables went from laughing at my commander choice, to absolute shock
Sokrates looks really fun! Narset, Parter of Veils to prevent opponents from drawning, Lost in the Maze for extra hexproof even when tapped, Heliod, the Radiant Dawn for cost reduction, and maybe even a Goad subtheme!
With regard to Shay Cormac, there is a black creature in Tempest named Bounty Hunter that can tap to destroy a creature with a bounty counter on it, so that would be a good fit with Shay Cormac. Of course you have to get a bounty counter on the creature before can target it with Bounty Hunter.
Eivor is sweet; preordered her already but most the set otherwise i dont care much for. Maybe the triad for mono red herigast, and maybe the 2 deck starter kit to have for $20 when i have a friend over.
With the new god card, making an emblem i think we are getting close to a "remove target/all" emblem(s) card. I give it a year, at most untill another commander horizons set. If not that then at least a card that "silences" emblems while in play.
Surtr is actually really fun to play against. My brother built a mono-red artifact deck (Kurkesh, Onnake Ancient hidden commander) but he added the red Dominus from Phyrexia that doubles non-combat damage. Every single 1-3 drop artifact he plays will smack you for 6. I also wish Shay Cormac would've been Mardu to go along with the other Bounty Counter commander.
I'll be real, I hope this set flops for two reasons. 1. I don't want these aftermath, shrinkflation boosters with less cards to become a thing. 2. I want WotC to second guess going all in on universes beyond over normal sets.
I have a feeling these aftermath type sets won't be going forward. They combined BIG with Outlaws because it was originally intended to be an Aftermath type set, but since Aftermath failed so hard they didn't release it like that. I imagine Assassins Creed was to far in the production pipeline to make any changes to it, so I have a feeling this will be the last of these types of sets.
Crazy people complain about getting new interesting cards. I get where you’re coming from, but UB sets offer something unique. We would never get cards like this in a normal set. A lot of normal sets keep the normal themes which gets old really fast.
@@Absntlight Even if you disagree with the second point, which is a preference thing whether or not you're okay with having mostly crossover products (personally hate the fortnite-ification of mtg), the first point still stands. These are undraftable packs called "beyond boosters" with half the amount of cards in them. That's 7 instead of play boosters, set boosters, and draft boosters 14 (plus a token, ad, art, or helper card for the 15th card). They tried this with aftermath and while AC may have been too far in production, a successful release will still communicate they should try again. It's blatant greed and anti-consumerism, it's bad for the game, and it's a legitimate problem.

I'm not excited about the set, but i am excited for Sokrates. Majored in philosophy, and it's an intrgiuing build. I am doing stuff like forced fruition. I am leaning really hard into giving my opponents too much 'knowledge'.
Yes! Same for me brother. Currently finishing my philosophy major. I built Sokrates, same style you mentioned: Forced fruition, second doctor, kwain, kami. Then punish with vaseling, iron maiden or swords of war and peace. Folio is also a very nice add and I recommend adding a good amount of untapping options like drumbbellower Edit: I also recommend adding a mill sub-theme. Stuff like psychic corrosion, sphinx's tutelage, teferi's tutelage, etc.
I might pick up a few of these for pieces in other decks, like Arbaaz Mir for my Zirda artifacts build. But I’m much, much more excited about Bloomburrow. Then again, the flavor of Sokrates in a Heliod Radiant Dawn/Warped Eclipse is pretty funny.
For Sokrates you can have Alms collector and those effects in the deck, blue untap abilities make it really hard to deal damage to you and really hard to get Sokrates off the table. I think he has great potential as a pillow control commander.
Honestly, the size of this set surprised me. It is really small, like Aftermath size... I really wanted them to print some of the villians in the game. (I really wanted to build a deck with the Pope as the commander.) If I didn't already own 4 Mono-Blue EDH decks, I would definitely be building Leonardo da Vinci. I may retire my Memnarch deck, seeing as how they would share a similar space & build Leonardo. You can really do some damage with him, making Portal to Phyrexia into a 0/2 Thopter token for 3 mana is amazing. Sadly, populate doesn't exist in Blue or Colorless... but don't put it past me to use one of those 2 mana clones on the Portal to Phyrexia Thopter lol.
I've been putting together an Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos deck that seems like it will be really quite strong because commander damage is based on the card itself, so no matter who is attacking with it it adds up to my commander damage on the player. Stitcher's Graft and Grafted Exoskeleton have no downsides because he cants be sacrificed. Luxior, Giada's Gift doubles the buff from his counters. Pip-Boy 3000 has three great modes to pick from every turn. And Inquisitorial Rosette gives you more tokens every turn to block anything your opponents swing at you. In my play testing it seems like everyone is dead to commander damage by turn 4-5.
What I find weird with Eivor is that she can kill your opponents so fast that those Sagas might never get to the last chapters. Also, Sigurd seems more... Cool, to me at least, and Eivor enters in the 99 there!
I'm brewing Eivor Sagas with the Trio in the 99 - easy to tutor in these colours and my yard will be full, can smash face with the weird mix of tokens sagas generate. Really into Senu, unique card design Wizards only dares to bring to other IPs. Classic. Also, Keen-Eyed commander cycle is a thing, we have 3/5 colours now.
Aside from “that guy” I don’t think the pronunciations were too bad. At least none of them were nearly as bad as whenever you pronounce Iname as “in name” lol.
Shay Cormac is my favorite character in assassin creedd, and i think his ability is kind of flavor because in thr story hes thins unstopable assassin hunter, so lossing protection of make sense

Not a huge fan of izzet like yourself but Shao Jun seems like a nice artifact build and I think more people need to run effects that deal damage to each opponent to shorten their games especially if you’re in a pod that is very casual and or sometimes has more players
Unfortunately, Mathas' ability of draw and life gain only applies to bounty counters he applies himself. I really wish they would errata that, Shay probably still goes in the deck though.
i love shay in concept but after playing against him i belive having his ability cost 2 or 3 or instead keep the 1 cost and target a card, maybe with some wording like you dont have to pay ward when doing this would have been better,

Dont forget thorbran and +1 damage effect , might be more efficient than doublers !
Phasing, blinking and regenerate are back on the menu for protecting your commander.

The attacking phrasing was seen in Parhelion II. Boros dude seemed really cool too

I like this commander design. It's simple and streamlined. Maybe one of the upsides on not building for draft.

White has some triggers when opponents draw cards, so I could see Socrates playing those sorts of cards.
