It's been 3 weeks since my surgery and I've been able to eat everything. I eat a ton of fruits and vegetables. No problems! I cut out all fast food from my diet.

Cheers! I have had an ileostomy for 37 years. I have really found that catering to my blood type diet has been amazing! There are many things that are not good for ostimates. A bit of research would be beneficial to you all!

I can eat pretty well everything now. I can definitely have more compared to before my surgery although I may need to chew certain things more than others.

    ESSAY INCOMING:
I've had a problem with eating that I'm still not sure is related to the Crohns or not. Basically, I don't enjoy food, and I don't ever have an appetite. This was a big problem when recovering from surgery, because I was losing weight rapidly, and they couldn't keep me on the TPN long term. They decided to let me go home and try and address the eating problem in a community setting, rather than as an inpatient.
I was on a lot of supplements (Fortisip/Calogen/Vitasavoury) to try and stop my weight dropping, but it didn't work. I then decided to try Pepsi because it was full of calories, and I needed to hit that 2500 target somehow. The next day, I had a blockage that got so bad my small intestine burst, and I needed more surgery. Luckily the burst was quite close to the stoma, so they simply cut a few inches off my small intestine, and pulled through a new one. To this day I'm not sure if the Pepsi caused it.
The whole experience of being hospitalised again crushed me emotionally, I became catatonic, unable to even speak. I wouldn't eat, or drink, and even when I tried I couldn't. There was four weeks of this, and I continued to lose weight. They ran out of options so put a feeding tube in my nose, and down my throat. I was discharged with that in place, taking in 1500 calories per night over 12 hours.
I made it my mission to put back on all the weight I lost and more. Armed with some new antidepressants (Mirtazapine - an appetite stimulant) I would try to eat 1-2 bags of Haribo a day, plus all my supplements, plus normal meals. I managed to put on about 20kg (44lbs/3 stone) in about 2 months. They let me have the tube out, and since then, I've managed to carry on putting on weight, albeit not as fast. I do tend to eat five packs of cookies all in one sitting, and I have at least a bag of popcorn every day with lunch.
For me with food, even though I don't really like anything, I didn't avoid any foods at all. Mushrooms, Popcorn, Sweetcorn, Satay Chicken - I just ate anything that would give me calories, and apart from the Pepsi incident, haven't had any problems. Although, there was this one time I ate two large bags of salted popcorn, and a large bag of salted peanuts. What happened was my output (normally fluid) became completely dry and crumbly, like brown sugar. It was so dry, it stuck to the outside of the bag and pushed my stoma inside (inverted it). I was kinda freaking out about it, but fixed it by filling the bag up with water to mix with the output and clear the blockage. It worked, but I'm going to avoid salted peanuts from now on.
Phew, well done for making it all the way down here!

Before I had my ileostomy I was in a low fat low fibre diet which I was on for 10 ish years. Now it's strange I'm allowed to eat pretty much whatever I like 😮😮😮

I honestly find eating anything since my colon & rectum removal 2 years ago to be a royal hassle of chronic gut aches, countless hours spent in the bathroom, endless gas, & numerous sick days, & everyday embarrassment. Never again will I have any organs removed in order to prolong my life. Anyone who isn't bothered by it is a far stronger than I.

Unless you've just had an operation on your bowel most people can eat anything with an ileostomy. I can't believe a stoma nurse told you that you had to avoid a whole list of foods. People are getting unnecessarily scared of eating foods especially the ones that are healthy for you and perhaps this is how this myth has arisen. Many people are secretly delighted at any hint that they can avoid fruit, vegetables, nuts etc because they hate them anyway. Ileostomy forced on me for 17 years no blockages ever. I eat nuts, popcorn, dried fruit, mushrooms and anything I like with no fear. Only thing that nearly caused a blockage is not on the avoid list. Chicken. That was only once.
