Thank you for giving New Model Army some of your time, they have such a varied and diverse back catalogue spanning over 40 years of recording music and touring. They have never been mainstream and have always gone their own way.
I really liked this track, I didn't Know. I've lost contact to them since the early 90s, and their albums were less well distributed around the world. Their first albums were excellent, with some great tracks: Brave New World (1 and 2), Spirit of Falklands, No rest, 51th State of America, White Coats, Stupid Questions, Get Me Out, Purity, among many others. Thanks for this band back to my ears. It sounded different, but still good.
They always seem to inhabit the place where folk writing and punk sensibilities meet. At the end of the 80's a mate introduced me to their track "Vengeance" (reviewing it might get you demonetized! Its an angry song with a fair bit of cussin' involved). Thunder and Consolation is THE Album you ought to listen to, their commercial peak and maybe their creative peak (well the latter for me certainly). The singles "Vagabonds" and the somewhat (well then) atypical "Green and Grey" are stand outs lifted by appearances of violinist Ed Alleyne-Johnson (some of his busking videos are a must watch as well).
Try their first albums. You should listen how they got here so good. Another great post punk band, still doing great records, is And Also the Trees. I'll insist until you stumble upon them. They're unique. The Critical Distance, would be my bet. 😊
Brilliant JP! Been a metalhead since the late 70's, got into NMA properly in the late 90's & they became one of my top 5 bands pretty quickly. Very difficult to pigeonhole which is why they only ever attained big cult status @ a similar worldwide level to say Marillion. Furrowed a musical course not dissimilar to Killing Joke during the mid 80's & have always been nothing less than striking & individualistic. More please, just from this LP you could do Burn The Castle, Born Feral & the Title track, which would give you a small indication of the breadth of their latter day sound.
Hmm, an odd pick for a classic band like this. A throwaway modern track...I mean, start at the beginning. Hardly any old school bands release new music worth a damn, sadly.
For some reason, I had it in my head that these guys were a bunch of crusty 'traveller' types, singing songs about rebelling, roaming the land freely, and upsetting the establishment. Listening to this track, I am completely bewildered why I had that preconceived opinion! Did they change at some point and I had only listened to earlier releases to form my impression?
I think I heard their first few albums, BITD, but they didn't really grab me so I've listenend to virtually nothing since. Re this, nope, not fussed at all. The tune/playing wasn't too bad. Rough, but not terrible. But the guys voice, yikes. Didn't like his singing, and even worse, the spoken word parts. But then I struggle with a lot (though not all) of spoken word sections, they always feel a mix of cheesy, and cringey to me.
The album Thunder and Consolation is a masterpiece. One of the best albums of all time.

You've opened a can of worms here Justin.First saw these in 1984,and they are still making great new music.IMHO the best band on the planet

Brilliant band ,postpunk and killer live.

My first concert back in 89 when I was just barely a teenager :) Please go into their back catalogue, amazing band and unbelievable live shows!
Their first 3 albums just brilliant.
Their 80s album No Rest is a classic. This track is not their best tho.

Is it because the digi production makes em (all the bands) sound generic? I found this surprisingly tasteful, restrained, cultivated and disciplined.
@@HippoYnYGlaw I agree. Still, one can feel they have a cohesion that only bands with a long past journey have.
@@HippoYnYGlaw ye, the modern production is a lot of the problem.
Cool track ,only slightly familiar with their 80’s output.

Are they usually more organic than this? Good though.
