  • I figured since I was already in Fresno shooting videos, I'd take a stroll around the old Santa Fe Depot. Although it is now the Amtrak and Greyhound Depot, it's still a cool structure with an interesting history. As an added bonus, the southbound Daylight arrived as I was there so I caught it coming and going as well!

Actually there are two wye's in Oakland and one in Bakersfield but it's just a cost cutting thing to run the trains in push-pull mode.

I don't know about Oakland, but the only thing that would constitute a wye in Bakersfield are the legs of the Landco Branch at Jastro, across the river at the west end of the yard, which would be very inconvenient and time consuming to use for anything other than what it is, by either Amtrak or BNSF.
      Thanks for checking it out!

Mark, The depot was open in August 1968 when I arrived in Fresno aboard the San Francisco Chief which remained in service until May 1,1971 when Amtrak started to operate the passenger trains in the USA.

I just go by what the books say, and as I have found out over the years, those aren't always correct!

Nice video Mark I’ve seen that station before and the one I wanted to look at was the old southern pacific depot. It is still standing too,

The SP depot belongs to the city and is used for administration. I looked into doing a video there just before Covid and they seemed receptive, but haven't inquired since.

That is a myth that you may not want to challenge at certain "publicly owned" buildings!

The Amtrak train is running in a push/pull configuration with the last/first car being a cab car with controls for the engineer. There are a number of trains run in that configuration; it saves turning the train. Most long-distance trains are run in the classic style of loco first.

Awesome!! I railfanned there a few months ago but didn't really see the inside much. Fresno does have some really cool old buildings right by there too.

The dispatching office for the valley division was located for many years on the second floor of the depot. The Fresno wire chief was located on the first floor of the building. Trainmaster was also located there along with other offices. Training classroom was there. It was a busy place back in the day.

Cool Fresno stuff. Regarding the end of passenger service. Santa Fe ran up till the start of Amtrak in 1971. Service was cut from several trains to just the San Francisco Chief in the mid 60's. The old dept has been beautifully restored and is well worth visiting.

I've caught many a Amtrak train out of Fresno. Back in the 70's Amtrak used the smaller building to the south as their depot and the Santa Fe was still using the building that Amtrak now uses. Greyhound was by the old S.P. depot further west on Tulare. I see you have met the street people of Fresno. Every time I ride out of there someone comes up to everyone and gives some sort of street story with their hand out.
