@@darrickcortez7672 Not really. What Massi is saying is that there is an artistic component to most Asian martial arts that is not present in other martial arts, the idea behind this being that the artistic showcasing of the form is good for the mind and for control so you don't fly off the handle and rush into fights recklessly, while the combat component is ideal for keeping you safe and providing quick, efficient strikes to vulnerable areas. You almost never see combat wushu in movies or any context that would be available to an audience, because with the exception of Bruce Lee, most masters find it pretty crass to perform an exhibition with combat techniques. You get taught it, but you also get taught to never showcase it and only use it in self-defense.

Fighting is easy: "To strike the throat, kick the knee. To kick the knee, strike the eye." and like that. Just do hsingyi for three hours every day for a few years and you'll do fine. Nothing fancy required. But advanced longfist is *hard*. That kind of timing is rare. It only comes a few times in a generation, as far as I can tell, if that. You had folks like Li Tianji, Ma Yuehliang and Yu So-Chow. In the next generation Yu Chenghui and Bow Sim Mark. In Western boxing we had Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, but not much footage of Sugar Ray Robinson. Every single one of these people had superior timing and advanced martial arts.

It's difficult but we're starting to think it may not be great for males, side-splits especially. There are a lot of hip-replacements from the first generations. But there's no better root than the split when you want an instant level-change to thrust an iron fan or sword up into the guts of a charging opponent. Unlike men, even Jet, women can go all the way down. We dudes don't have the right shape hips.

Boxing is one of the hardest ways to earn a living, very few get rich and most get brain damages. MMA purses are still way lower. Movies is how many of the best Chinese boxers make their livings, and some of them Opera before the era of film. This is where Sammo came from, and Sammo can throw. Everyone respects him. Jet was lucky because he came up in the sport, and didn't have to fight. Most of the best fighters didn't really have that choice. It was that or nothing. Show me any movie fight that is completely realistic and I'll show you something modern audience would be bored by. The best choreography is a mix, and the chorepgraphy they did for Jet was always designed to show athleticism. With Bruce Lee it was more about strength and speed, because Karate was king in that era. The arts adapt to every generation, and the rise of BJJ is why Donnie made SPL. All of these guys are part of the same martial family, just come from different lineages and domains.

Different styles, IMO. I am no expert, but that is my impression having seen both in action. Neither seems superior. Bruce Lee was exceptional in many ways. Jet Li will also be a legend, but there's only one Bruce Lee :)

Most martial arts solo demonstrations look like dance, because they are coordinated demonstrations of a sequence of techniques. Part of what's important here is his form and precision.

carmaj156 Agree, but the reason it calls Martial Arts because it is different than normal fighting, it has pholisphy and morality with it. people who train this also improve spiritual living.
