Learning by ear is always best for musicianship. Earl Scruggs didn’t have tabs he played what he heard, thank you for the lesson wayne. These lessons have helped me tremendously.

I’ve been playing guitar for 60 years. I can tell you that I relied on tab exclusively to learn the guitar and it has significantly held me back. Now, at 67 years old, I am taking a new approach to learning guitar and mandolin and I stopped using tabbed out music. Wayne, you’ve sent me on a new path. I wish I could’ve done this many years ago.

Tabs are like an alarm clock going off on an early Monday morning. While useful and sometime practical. You’ll be happier if you dont need to rely on them. Learning music from tab is about as fun as standing in line at the DMV.😂

Everything I ever did and learned was by ear. No tabs, sheet music, anything. I'm just hearing something and figuring out how to transcribe it to the fretboard, then growing from there. After thousands of hours, jams, shows, etc, I learned a ton. But the beauty of music for me is that there's always something new to learn. Some folks are gifted in ways to be able to do certain things. Now a days being hearing impaired pretty much killed my learning by ear ability.

The lick in question is very similar to portions of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue”. Great lesson. I’m a jazz and rock player, not a bluegrasser, but I always learn something here. Thanks for sharing.

Great lesson that really tied it all together, Wayne! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge so freely. I know I am a much better player since I started watching your videos. I really appreciate it.

I miss the close-ups of the mando, as in your previous videos.

Could you tell me the brand shoulder strap you are using in the video? I just bought a A style mandolin and need to buy a strap, yours looks perfect for me.

That's weird. I haven't had anyone else tell me they had an issue with that. Hopefully it is now functioning as intended. Thx for letting me know.

I only ever learned by ear. And I learned a lot of tunes. Still am. Then I discover all these ppl taking lessons and requesting tabs. Lol they can't seem to do a damn thing without them.😅 talk about limiting yourself.

When I listen to songs I am always trying to figure out the cords changes whether it’s pop, rock or bluegrass.

Use tab but don't rely upon it.
