    Make sure you have two-thirds of a tank of gas unless something has changed the generator runs off the fuel tank so if you get the fuel too low it's kind of hard to keep you from running out of gas

    Check the engine oil , Onan made the dipstick to long its a common fault Drain about 350ml out and check again ,, with to much oil it slaps the under side of the piston , Onan releced a buliton and you can send in for the NEW OIL PLUG with the new marks on it ,
    Ours did the same ,, after draining some oil out it ran perfect and still does , ours has 2500 hours now

    Found out on the innernet that u may have too much engine oil in it. If full, drain out 1 pint if oil.

    There are a couple of things that will keep an Onan Genset from continuing to run. Either low or no oil pressure or failure to generate AC current. This feature is meant to protect your Genset from a catastrophic failure of the generator engine or some other electrical failure. If your engine is full of oil it can only be a few things, the control board, the voltage regulator or generator failure itself. None of these things are cheap. I enjoyed your video. You seem to be very thorough in your repairs. Good luck!

      Thank you so much!
      Ya im starting to realize it wasn't a fuel thing and more of an electrical problem like you said.
      And no kidding about the prices, seems like any direction i take will cost me loads of money with no guarantee that it will get it running. I think it's time for a new plan.
      Thanks for your input man it really helps!

      @@ClassALiving I would have tested the fuel pump before replacing it, and looked for fuel in the float bowl. Maybe worked harder on that original rusted on fuel line before trashing it.

    Control board has start disconnect circuit that energizes when unit starts putting out AC. On some models there is a resistor back by the coil that is inserted into the circuit at that point that runs the ignition. If that resistor is open, the coil stops firing when start disconnect occurs. The resistor is mounted down low on the back side of the engine on, when viewed from carb side.

    On these the biggest problem is the fuel pump and when you replace it you must use the real one not an after market or one that is close. Found that out the $$$$ way also there is a ,5 amp fuse located on the front plate that might need to be changed and its a old style round glass one. And always replace the fuel filter with a clear plastic one so you can see if its clogged. Happy trails. Oh yes and the two levers on the right hand side need to be on

    TIP: EMERALD (III & PLUS & ??) has a OIL FILTER and OIL PRESSURE switch, and LOW OIL, or clogged filter will result in START but DIE IMMEDIATELY when START Released IF OP RELATED. The OP switch kills/ grounds ignition if OP does NOT open the switch; (mounted next to base of OIL FILTER); 2) (ALSO, thinking about your OTHER VIDEO where you removed GEN), think I recall no fuel evidenced in the new clear filter? Maybe rubber line cracked/ oversized sucking air? or 3) Main FUEL TANK BELOW 1/4-TANK?

    Check all wire pins for corrosion in the connectors take them apart, use brass wire brush , vinagor. Current might be crossing between wires. Cab needs to be clean, check float needle if it is sticking. Clean and reset coil to flywheel, remove rust. Make sure thin gap between coil and flywheel

  • @robertrubey6224

    If you aren't getting fuel, blow back through the line toward the tank. If you don't get bubbling in the tank, the fuel level is too low, the dip tube rusted off, or the hose has rotted and has a hole in it, which is real common.

    My genset 4000 wound up being the mice built a nest between engine and generator and when it went to turn over it snapped the plastic rotor that sits between the engine and generator and had no spark .

    Our plan did the exact same thing same problem. After exhaustive research it ended up being the voltage regular. With the starter switch depressed during the start cycle voltage is supplied to the ignition and as so as it is released the voltage stops. Because the voltage regulator is bad

    THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF....
    "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR"
    It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person.
    I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats, and of course I got rid off the stinky nest, lol!!!
    Then I assembled everything back together and... bingo it's runing like a champion!!!
    For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel).
    Just picture this: (Any gasoline engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed.
    Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover because you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding, lol!!!
    After testing the gen then I did put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover, now it's ready to be installed at my RV.
    Once the gen was installed back at my motorhome I started it to be tested for electric power but not before flipping the electric switch (on) at the gen starting control panel (sometimes hiding under or around the panel) to transfer power to my RV GFCI main outlet and electric panel as well, my motorhome it's equipped with GFCI so I reset it and tested for green led light indicating power is ready at my main breakers panel, so I turned my main breaker (on) along the others ones but no power was present at my breaker main switch (faulty main braker) so I flipped it many times, sometimes you can make it work again, mine did work, lol!!!
    I'm happy because everything works now including the ref for cold drinks and AC for this crazy summer, lol! Later I'll buy me a new main braker, for now this is a resurrected generator story that needed to be shared.
    If this can help eaven one person to save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!

    Nice work. On the final wiring, I would have used marine heat shrink connectors to keep out water intrusion, that I think will get into the wiring because of location. Ya, I saw someone else have to replace the circuit board to get her running.

    Check the carburetor bowl cut off jet it may be stuck in the closed position not letting fuel in the bowl, Clan the stop jet with Carb Cleaner, and if that don't fix it then it maybe the slow or fast jets clogged up, wish you luck.

    I get so many of these generators from scrapped motor homes. And the first things I do if it doesn’t start (not in any order) and some require all 3 things done.
    1)clean the carb
    2)remove the front control panel cover and clean the contact points where the wiring attaches to the board
    3)clean and adjust the ignition points if it has them.
    9 times out of 10 if there was an issue it will fix it and will work great again...
    oh and on your replacement fuel pump there was a inline pre filter on the pump when you opened it from the box.

      Class A Living no problem, just trying to help you out on that, another thing, some of them need you to hold the start button in the starting position longer than expected to make sure it’s producing power before you release the switch. Nothing wrong with adding the extra filter it’s good to get a visual.

    Hey D, I have almost the same identical genset and same problem. Just finished cleaning the entire carb within an inch of it's life and problem persists. Please let me know if, and how you fixed it. I am, at best, a shadetree mechanic, but don't want to ditch a generator with only 95 hrs on it and that has run perfect until recently. I don't know how to check to see if it'S generating AC since it won't start, but it was running everything (A/C, ETC.) fine until it quit.

    So I don't have to keep a 1/4 tank of fuel in the coach fuel tank. I installed a valve in the fuel line to the generator. Turn it left it draws fuel from the coach tank. Turn it right and it will draw fuel from a gas can next to the generator. I did the same set up for the engine. I use fresh fuel each time exercising the generator or the engine. I don't have to keep the coach tank 1/4 tank full.

    For what ever it is worth. My Onan Emerald III also fails to run from time to time. My resolution is (until I check it out more comprehensively) is to turn the altitude knob back an forth a couple of times.

    • @terencehennessy1145
      @terencehennessy1145 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use that altitude adjust trick when mine surges after starting, and has seemed to help, every time; thinking about (my current problem of dying after 20-45-min w/ hard restart or no restart until cool), ALSO may 1) investigate possible float sticking closed; 2) circuit board relay for fuel pump; 3) fuel pump; 4) fuel line sucking air? (Few years ago) I had a Kawasaki Mule carb (ran previous day), float NEEDLE stuck shut, removed carb, float bowl and float, and had to use pliars to twist and pull needle loose from the white deposits from the ethanol (??); was able to clean and reinstall the same needle, but it had been amazingly, very solidly stuck shut. May have to pull my own Onan carb for inspection?

    • @DieuEtMonDroit230
      @DieuEtMonDroit230 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This might have nothing to do with yours. But for the Emerald Micro Quiet, people say that the oil gauge is wrong and a cup (or half a quart, I can't remember) must be taken out of the generator. If not, they all say the generator shuts off when it is hot and won't restart again until cool. Now, even if you don't have that model (with the wrong dip stick marks on the gauge) it might still be possible that other generator exhibit this problem if the oil is slightly over-filled. Might be worth a shot to check the oil and remove a couple cups if it completely full.

  • @frankchodacki6269
    @frankchodacki6269 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your first clue was pegging out the voltage on your meter. There is a charge resistor that can go bad on the back side of the generator, providing too much voltage and smoking the fuel pump.

  • @ocho441

    • @bobbarker7733
      @bobbarker7733 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not the filter or anything to do with fuel starvation. It is most likely the safety features that are inherent in Onan generators. They will not start if they have low or no oil pressure or if they are not producing AC current. That is where your generator's problem lies.
