The XT350 is the perfect motorcycle, I have one from 1987 and it still starts and rides fine. Never having issues with weak batteries and nog being able to start the bike, just choke on, kick, choke off and go. It’s simple, light and you can go on every terrain. It’s so much fun to ride. I would buy a new one if Yamaha ever decides to produce them again, but only if it comes with kick start only and no computers of any kind (no ecu or digital instruments)
Same here! Mine is 1987 as well I got it last year with 24000km on the clock. I will try to keep it alive as much as I can, but it would be really nice if Yamaha produce a new one. It is nice to have a non-competition bike with comfortable seat, street legal with nice fuel economy and the possibility to carry a passenger.
I still have my '88 version of this I bought new when I was stationed in Germany. Took it all over the place, rode it on the autobahn; although had to stay in the 'slow lane' since it topped out at only 90-95mph, lol.
Those things are ridiculously hard to start when they are hot. Don't stall it on the trail. Ask me how I know. Unbelievable low end torque. It is truly a wheelie machine.
I have one right know, great bike, with the frame painted yamaha blue and the plastics and tank blue, its like a tractor man its just amazing on the road and dirt, old and reliable machines these gems.
Ive got an 87xt350. Works great. Color is faded a lot more than yours though. I swapped the rear suspension as any original rear suspension is not going to have any gas left in it/will not hold gas. Also swapped for a RSM easy pull clutch. Best thing I ever did
I bought a 1985 XT 350 from S &M cycle in Clarion, PA for $1900 new. I liked the 6 speed for slow trails in the woods yet it would cruise 55mph on the highway.
Yeah I'd avoid the highway, but yeah, great bikes. I'm on my 2nd. 1988 with 12k. Starts 2nd kick most days. Parts are hard to find. 520 chain conversion (stocks 428) 15t front (xt600) , 43 rear (xt250) are direct fit and is basically stock final gear.
I had the xt 600 same model year and color. One of the best bikes i ever had, indestructible and cheap to run.I had it all over the Italian alps. You can pick them up here for pennies.
Mako Steevens Yes you could buy one cheap, but i think it would be unlikely you’d ride it immediately. In Italy as you can imagine the paper work is crazy. When you buy any registered vehicle you need to sign a swap owners document in a special office that costs from 100 to 200 euro. After that you’d need to insure it and don’t know how easy that would be for a tourist or even possible. Here in Italy you have the language barrier as not many people speak English. In reality,i suppose it could be done. When people buy vehicles from Italy to be used in another country, they register then scrapped first then reregister then in there own countries.Bikes you’ll find for sale on kijiji Italy, subito.it,auto scout 24 and other private ads.Last week i saw an XT600 with around 30,000 miles in perfect condition going for 800 euro.If you study the market, you can find some real bargains. We don’t have rust problem here because of the weather.Bikes are cheap here in general and used cars.
I had a 1991 xt600 for awhile... Liked the bike, but went on a 500mile trip and was stranded due to the trans sprocket wore thru the main output shaft.. had the shaft replaced , then it started doing it again?.. could never figure it out.. dealer didn't know either.. stock sprockets/chain and correct tension... Made no sense to me... traded it in on a Slightly used 89 FJ1200 with 3200miles.. put a big jet kit and yosh 4-2 upswept pipes on it.. had to get a Corbin seat to keep from getting left behind while the bike took off.. LoL
Nice. Why doesn't anyone make 350's anymore? I have the newer fuel injected SOHC XT250 which I'll never sell. I know a lady who has over 35,000 miles on hers
They are unusually heavy though right. I was surprised at the weight when I first hopped on mine before I bought it. My oldest son has a Honda 125 dirtbike and his bike sits about the same height. He sat on my xt thinking he could kick it over and he could barely keep the bike upright to even try to kick it lmao
When my '88 was at peak tuning, it had Supertrapp, drilled air box, bigger jets, and it ran quite well. A guy who had a Honda XL600 rode my 350 and he was quite surprised at its response. Hopefully I'll get 'er running again after some cosmetic and other small repairs.
i have one from 92, the only problem is the gas tank, i replaced two already, they rust very easy, i might need to try to fit another gas tank from any other model.
Drain the gas & put apple cider vinegar in the gas tank. Shake it around a couple times each day for 2-3 days. Pour it out. That should eat the rust in the tank. Then take baking soda and mix it with water, pour it in the tank and shake that around. Pour that out. Now put a little gas in the tank and shake that around, then pour that out. Done.
My equivalent is a 92 Suzuki DR 350s . Now with 30,000 plus miles. Bought with almost no miles, in 92, guy bought to much bike. Me and that machine have been in amazing places. Like Trigger to Roy Rodgers she’s a trusted friend. Six speed will plod at 1 mph on a trials hill, sixth have passed Harley’s at 90 mph in a tuck. Her condition belies her experience appearance as new. Once on a camp out after supper and a night ride in the forest narrow roads it was a total darkness night. Literally with out headlight you cold not see your hand in the front of your face. Totally overcast and absolutely no other light sources. It’s kinda eerie your whole world is that dash and headlight beam. Not a time for any kind of trail problems.
If that were here u would have been locked up and put in jail if a cop were to c u ridn without tags. Locdown capt kaos locdown and possibly a run over by the popoha
I have a totally original XT350 in the same colours. Only 4000 miles on the clock, here in Scotland 🏴

I absolutly love the thing.

I had an '87 XT350 back around 1990 or so. It was my first street legal bike.
My first bike is an 87 xt350. I got it last week in pretty good condition.

I just rebuilt one up. And I love it. Same year even. Only difference is I put the new front Yamaha fender on it. Much nicer look.

Ktm still makes one, exc 350. But then you'd have to ride a ktm lol

The xt bikes very very popular in the uk especially the 250 for those of us that couldnt afford the xl
Having owned one for over 10 years. Very reliable low maintenance go anywhere bike. A little under powered & heavy for what it was.

Muriatic acid will do it in seconds. Then epoxy coat or just keep it filled with premium
I just bought one. A 1989 in really clean condition. 3500 miles on the odometer. If it's real. The tires are original.
That's a nice Yami, I remember when those came out, sweet bikes.
My next buy. Both my daughter n me want them. Commute & some off road 😎
Just bought a 99 xt350 in blue and white today lol it’s in the same shape as that one only 1800 miles

My first bike I had one
Cool...thats right,you did restore a xt350
Rockstock sounds cool. 😎
I see a lot of these on Craigslist probably gonna have to cop one lol
I just got one, they are pretty easy to work on and parts are too hard to find either
looking at buying one of these bikes, what is high millage?
Hi kap . U have a xt550 in house ,
Do you feel like the 350cc is a limitation? Looking to get that bike but I'm used to 600 dual sports.
How many miles does a xt350 get before they need a topend my has 16k on it just curious if anybody has any idea
Just keep an eye on the cam chain tensioner and make sure your oil pump is working properly and it should last you a while longer.
