      are all infantry trained the same these days? am ex RGJ, I enlisted in '85 and back then there were only 2 regiments in the division but they were big regiments, us and the Light Infantry both of which are parent regiments to 'The Rifles' in those days we had our own training depot in Winchester aswe were trained differently and pushed harder than normal infantry in the rest of the army and more was expected of us back then too... good choice of regiments but if they are all the same now there would be little to choose from

    When I joined up in 72, all Berets were worn the same with the Cap Badge two fingers over the Left Eye. At your unit you did alter it a bit to look like a Tankie Beret or Para Beret.

    • @guardiancrown9632

      No the unit still has it the same, a regular there told be how to do it and they also said 2 fingers. (Same unit- rifles)

    The wearing of the Cap Badge over the left Temple or ear, began with Op Banner. The painting of the Cap Badge in Black remedied this as well, but Old Sweats still wore it Para style.

    Old school method - use boiling water for first dunking more effective than just “warm”, be careful not to let the leather band get wet. Celer et Audax.

  • @Jib230181
    @Jib230181 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not bad not bad done a good job on shaping it looks good. When I did mine I used hot water for 60 seconds then cold then hot water again then cold then stuck it on and moulded it to my head & shaped it then let it dry a little on my head while keeping on going over shaping it then stuck it in the airing cupboard for couple days as the water in the beret and heat help shrink the beret a little to have a better fit on the head. Yeah loads of different ways to do it tho. I still have mine as it’s a good reminder of the good old days and what you achieved and what you did during your military service.

  • @yorkshire6458
    @yorkshire6458 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hello there you first take the inside cloth out carefully not to ruin the Stichting that goes round the beret.
    Then into warm water rinse it out,on to your head.
    Badge over the linker eye and shape over to the right forming the beret.
    Live on your head for 20 to 30 mins and lay it on warm heater to dry.
    Later when dry it will be tight to put the beret on,but will fit better.
    RAF regt

    Unless they have changed you can’t shrink it that fast with a bit of warm then cold water. It takes 2 or 3 times in boiling water then cold

  • @forceninewinds
    @forceninewinds 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Top tip. Get a beret that is one size too big, it allows for possible shrinkage of the band if you do get it wet, and for female it allows for the fact your head will get ‘bigger’ when your hair grows out a bit. Having said that I have a 62cms head which makes ordering a beret fun for My ACF battalion. I usually end up buying one.

  • @RobertsBulgaria
    @RobertsBulgaria 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Never would have gotten away with anything other than 1 inch above the eyebrows and the cap badge directly above the left eye. The Regimental Sergeant Major would have torn me a new asshole if I had tried to wear it any other way and our Berets were HUGE and that is why we often said you could steal cookhouse plates in them and nobody would notice. To get a really nice Beret such as you have, we'd have to buy an Officers version from Gieves & Hawkes or as they were known, Thieves & Hawkes. Our bands weren't leather as they crack, ours were some leather substitute if I recall.

    Canadian Reservist here and also affiliated with The Rifles, beret looks smashing and well formed. I usually just jump in the shower and form it, wring it a few time pop out and let it sit. And we have it over the left eye and I form it to have a deep rain gutter between the cap badge and the head.

  • @alvindurochermtl
    @alvindurochermtl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Rifles regimental dress manual specifically and literally says "The badge is positioned above the left eye and nowhere else!", meaning that little off the left eye is not an option.

      Try telling that to members of the Parachute Regiment, I don’t think I ever saw one of them with the cap badge above the left eye, above the left ear maybe but never the eye, most of their berets looked like soft peaked cap with a badge stuck on the side, lol.
      I remember soaking and shaping my beret when I joined the RAF back in ‘79, must have done a reasonable job since I wore the same beret for the ten years I was in and it never lost its shape.

    • @alvindurochermtl
      @alvindurochermtl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ChelsieAngeles The manual has photos of Riflemen on parade doing it wrong as example as a matter of fact. In any case one doesn't need a manual to know and neither is this specific to any regiment. The notion that the capbadge ought to be worn right above the eye is something that has been in practice since, well, the beret was adopted into the army. You do what people do b/c its popular or you do b/c it is the right or appropriate thing to do, that's the difference between leaders and followers, soldiers and NCOs.

      Just watched a video of a Para. passing out parade from 2021, the Corporal Instructor on the parade has quite clearly got his cap badge positioned almost over his left ear with the folded side of the beret over his right eye looking like a peaked cap.

  • @stevefoster5138
    @stevefoster5138 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to cut the lining out first, use hot water (as hot as your fingers can endure, just below boiling point is ideal). Then a plunge into cold water, shape it on your head and leave it on until dry, (it will shrink to your head size)….
    But most importantly do all of the above but with your cap badge on the beret, you can then shape the beret around the badge.
    That’s the way I was taught how to do it in 83…..good luck with your career.

    Whenever I did mine I just soaked it in hot water, wrung it out and shaped it. Then I'd sit around with it on my head and let it dry (to a certain extent) while it was on my head. That way the leather band doesn't tend to shrink. There are loads of ways that people do it, and all of them are probably right, it's just your own way of doing it. I reshape mine every year in readiness for Remembrance Sunday.
