When "Joe Versus the Volcano" first came out, a lot of people didn't get it because it so much deeper than a fairy tale/ love story. Now, as an adult, I see how brilliant the story really is. Thanks for bringing this underrated film back for a new viewing for the younger generation. Hopefully it will be more appreciated in 2021 than it was in 1990.

Love this movie and love that you love it too! Hanks is at the top of his game for me, blending his early wackiness (Bachelor Party, Money Pit) with the gravitas he wields now (Castaway, etc). The scene with the giant moonrise always makes me weepy as he is dwarfed by the magnificence. 😭
Meg getting to play around with looks and accents is so fun, and she is so cute as each, even when they dress her down as Didi. To me, she represents the 'three faces of the goddess' - Maiden (Didi - naive but eager), Mother (Patricia - caring and supportive) and Crone (Angelica - jaded but wise). Really deep symbolism in a movie already packed with symbols.

It probably sounds weird, but this movie changed my life at a critical time. I had become numb to a situation I didn't want to be in. I came into my apartment, turned on the TV and there was this movie. After I watched it, I literally picked up the phone, called my old dive shop I had left behind when I moved away for work, and signed up for a Divemaster class. I swam and studied and passed the class, did the same with the Instructor class, and left that situation behind. I worked in Cozumel, the Bahamas, the great lakes, I got my life back.
This movie will always have a place in my heart and I wish I could thank Mr. Hanks and Ms. Ryan for it. I would be a long long way down the wrong road by now without them.

This movie blew my mind when I saw it as a teenager in the mid 90s. It's goofy but also profound. It's a parable and a quest and a series of lessons about life. And like Office Space a decade later, it's about how so many of us sell ourselves to soulless corporations just to survive, and that's a powerful message when you're about to strike out into the world as a new adult.
The scene where Joe beholds the cartoonishly large moon is almost like a religious experience, and it makes me feel like crying every damn time.

the music. I was 16 when I saw JVV in the theater with my dad.
The Ink Spots, rockabilly-era Elvis, Sergio Mendes! The soundtrack had a huge influence on my developing taste in music. It set me off in so many different genre directions and helped me develop an appreciation for what I listen to now.
I love everything about this movie.
My friends and I occasionally drop Dan Hedeya's "I'm not ARGUING THAT WITH YOU!" for no damn reason, other than that it's fucking hilarious.
That summer Saturday, bonding with my Dad at the movies, is a cherished memory. We sang "Come Go with Me" all the way home.

Saw this in theater and was soooo pissed at all the negative reviews that just didn't GET it. It's a modern fairy tale... and as such it's meant to be whimsical. Everyone thought it was just a comedy, because at that point Hanks was flat out known for slapstick. This was deep and about accepting your place in the universe. To appreciate the simple things that make us feel human. I was just about to turn 15 when this came out, and it literally blew my mind. His speech to the moon still brings out the tears.

This is one of my go to comfort movies. The soundtrack. The lighting. The metaphysical aspects. Did you notice the pattern? The path he took to work, it was the company logo, it was the pattern broken into the wall by Graynomore, it was the pattern the lightening took to sink the boat, it was the path up the volcano... "All my life, I have felt like I have known you" well, the answers to life are in your face no matter where you are. My favorite character is the limo driver.

You can also look at it as a covenant between the islanders and the volcano and by bringing in outsiders to fulfill the contract, they broke it. The giant moon and expression of thanks gets me every time. Also the bit about how everyone is mostly asleep to the wonders of this life. It's a great movie to see every few years when your in the mood.

One of the benefits of growing up in the 80s, in addition to to amazingly unique music, are the pre-tech, incredible movies with great actors and story telling. This is one of those great movies that you find few people have even seen. Thanks for the review and great insight. Your attention to detail and finding little nuances in the movies you watch is refreshing and helps us see the movie in another light as well.

    Patricia's soliloquy before jumping,
"Nobody knows anything, Joe. We'll take this leap, and we'll see. We'll jump, and we'll see. That's life, right?"

The first time I saw this movie I was almost brought to tears. I, like you, also went to film school. I was forty-one. (25 years after high school.) I've been employed on 3 movies in my life,. I was a production assistant for "Major League" , Ferris Bueller's day off , and an audio tech. and an extra for "Mr. 3000". I also was a contributing writer for the TV show "Touched by an Angel" back in the early 2000's. I'm retired now. As for "Joe vs the Volcano", my screenwriting professor used this movie as an example of symbolism and human nature. Personally, I think the scene where Joe stands up to the rising moon and thanks God for his life cemented Tom Hanks as a superstar. To me that scene was brilliant.

I think it's one of the greatest movies ever... so much symbolism describing so much about life... We all go through life being owned by it... We are told what we want, and we all want what we cannot achieve... This is about waking up and choosing your own path... Great reaction. Thank you.

At the end before they jump Joe says, "It's been a long crooked road".
The company logo is seen in the entrance to the factory, in the crumbling wall in Joe's house, in the shape of the lightning bolt that sinks the boat, in the way up to the volcano, and, in the film's trailer (included on the DVD) is the lightning bolt that travels up the film's title and strikes the top.

It has been my favorite movie for decades. For so many reasons. The spooky/strange "Blue Moon" song while they were adrift turns out to be just the regular release by Elvis Presley. I had no idea he took such chances. It is now on my phone.
I really like movies with lots of character actors, so this one is the mother lode for me.
Toby Chief - Abe Vigoda - Detective Fish from Barney Miller is one of the best, but the luggage salesman has pushed through and created a new god of ethical sales in Valhalla. Then the Meg parts, the doctor, the chauffeur, "We're in for a blow" Amanda Plummer, Mr. Waturi and the Lloyd Bridges as the mad millionaire (who did Sea Hunt in his action years). Just fantastic casting and character/philosophy ideas. Little ideas, like the "Yes, No, I don't know" theme that keeps coming up, continue to be a perspective check for me when I feel like I'm getting swept along by various pressures.

I’ve always loved this movie and haven’t found very many people who have even seen it. In my humble opinion, It’s one of the most satisfying movie endings I have ever seen. The fact that Meg Ryan’s character commits fully to Joe and is willing to dive into the pits of hell with him, speaks to how right the two of them are for each other. Additionally, Joe’s willingness to keep his commitment to jump into the volcano demonstrates the strength of his character.

You get this movie, you really get it!!!
I've always loved this movie since I was a teen. It's one of those movies that I get something more out of every time I watch it.
My thoughts on the volcano blowing Joe and Patricia out was the volcano God being like:
"I only asked for one of you *MY* islanders to sacrifice themselves. Not only do you bring someone who is not one of you to jump, but I have to witness one of the most powerful displays of true love and I'm supposed to be happy they are the ones sacrificing themselves to me?
    Pttooie!!! (spits them out)
You've failed to find the courage within yourselves, you've failed to be people worthy of me! That's what the sacrifice was all about! The only ones worthy are the outsiders themselves. You don't deserve this island! "
That took a lot of words to describe an idea that always felt simple to me since the first time I saw this movie.
    This was a great reaction!
My favorite movie is Rocky, by the way. And I did feel I knew who I was more when I decided it wasn't just "one of my favorites" but my most favorite. And that was a good feeling.
    Best Regards!!!

I LOVE this movie. The production design is glorious. Until Joe reaches the doctor's office the sets and costumes are monochrome, and then when he gets outside even the wall is colourful.
Not sure where they shot the ocean stuff - they don't mention Universal Studios (Falls Lake is the best bet, it's the water set they used in The Truman Show) but if not there there's probably an equivalent in Burbank.

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it. The "crooked path" is also the company logo, the lightning bolt that breaks the ships back and the pathway up the volcano. It is also a imaged pathway into the next change in Joes life. Also the opening scene with the longshot of the factory belching smoke presages the island and volcano,. The movie is chock full of repeating and sometimes evolving images. Meg Ryan's clenched fist and colorless crumpled character evolves into Angelica's more open but disconnected personality and finally into Patricias' well rounded self aware character. The luggage is also a symbol of Joe's new life being filled with all new aspects of his "long voyage" of self realization. This is just a soul satisfying movie and I have never understood how it was so overlooked.
