Even over fifty years later this song is a pleasure to listen to.
In my experience 1967-70 was the best time to grow up in the UK.
A glance at the audience gives an insight to the respectability and style of that time. Work stress was unheard of, instead we often had security. The summer of 1968 was warm throughout and this lovely song provides a mental picture for those who lived in this era.

Had the pleasure of seeing the Manfred's last night before a packed out audience at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Fronted by Paul Jones, Mike D/Arbo, and Tom Mc Guinness they performed this song, and most of their hits from 1964 -1969.
What was remarkable was the vocals were almost like the original hit sound
They were given a standing ovation at the end. And confirmed that after 54 years since they were last in he charts their music and sound are right up there with the Beatles Hollies and Rolling Stones with their legacy

How lucky you were! My friend and I were going to book to see them at De Montfort Hall Leicester, but I had such a lot going on last year - family stuff - that I never got around to booking the tickets. Won't get chance again now as that was the last tour of seeing both Paul and Mike together! So I'll have to make do with TH-cam videos - which I don't mind because Mike d'Abo was as cute as a button back then! 😍

@@beverleyr2625 Genuinely sorry you couldn't see them in the Midlands
They did say during the concert that they only perform two concerts annually in the UK
Last in Liverpool a couple of years ago. Whether a contract issue, but in my opinion, and I suspect many in the audience, if the concert would have been recorded it would have shown the lack of talent today, And how the vocals and backing was near perfect to the original recordings to a more wider audience.

Ffs, listen to the words -- banal rubbish.
Ffs, listen to the music -- infantile pop.

It's not just 2022 it's anything that came after the Seventies as far as I'm concerned. Back in the autumn of 1988 the East Midlands radio station GEM-AM went on air for the very first time. It was, at that point, the first and only radio station playing only "golden oldies" - the hit songs we grew up with from the 50s, 60s and 70s - it didn't even play the 80s, which suited me because I hated the 80s! It was soon taken over by Capital Radio Group and GWR and some years later by Global Radio and every January they start slipping 80s songs into their playlists, so then I turn it off and listen to my playlists via Bluetooth. I'm listening to my 60s playlist right now and have to say it is heaven to my ears! 😂

For years, starting when I was young and first heard it, I imagined it was about an orphanage or foster home in England (probably London). I love this song so much! I was born 1981 but I feel so happy to hear this song and sometimes I wish to use a time mashine and spend one day in the 60s. Thank you so much for the upload!

This was on a BBC 'Sounds of the 60s' TV compilation shown the other night and it stated in the text at the end of the show that the song was co-written by Leonard Cohen. If it's true I've not heard it before.

Great song seems so innocent in contrast to the over produced stuff from recent decades.

I was 6 years old when this song was about , the same year my beloved West Brom last won the FA cup, 1968 , this was a song I grew up listening to, and we even named my youngest son who was born in 2002 Jack.
