  • Abandoned and left to melt away in the Arizona sun, an old gas station and general store full of treasures and history. During the DIY restoration we found money, old new stock, original 1920s Vivo gravity-fed gas pumps, old trucks, old cars and so much more. Operated as a general store from 1920 to 1980, everything was still inside! Hoghland Store is located on the corner of the Graham Ranch in Pleasant Valley, Arizona, site of the Pleasant Valley War.

Love this. My dad grew up in Pleasant Valley and he and his siblings pumped gas and did odd jobs for Mr. Hoghland. Mrs. Hoghland was the local medical provider, being a nurse, and patched my dad up when he did things like gash his leg open on a cattle guard. We visited the store after it was closed, but, while Mr. Hoghland was still alive, and I remember it looking like your pictures, full of ancient merchandise. My dad adored that place, and I wonder how many times he sat on the porch looking over the same view.

Amazing to see the transformation of the old Hoghland store. We used to ride our bikes up there to buy candy from the large display case. I remember my dad pumping gas from the gas pumps and there used to be a meat and cheese slicer and he Ray would slice longhorn cheese and bologna for you.

Greetings from the Great Sioux Nation in the Dakotas. You folks as a team of two are to be commended for the restoration/renovation of this historical community structure. Also I really like your ideas and theme that was followed in the process, I especially liked the antique car headlights your turned into hanging lights in the kitchen. Much much work many many hours but alas jola you have a treasure that you not only love but what youve accomplished for the entire community will be realized in the process. The before and afters was another great idea to show all the hard work your husband did in the process (its so much more enjoyable being the boss, lol jk). Again great work, I think the community should recognize the significance of what was accomplished here and support as well as advertising this showpiece. I wish for you the sense of accomplishment you both deserve and hope your future at this spot is everything you worked so hard for. I do hope to get into this area this coming summer and look forward to seeing for myself the entire area. Take care and keep up the good work! Ohan Mitakuyaoyasin (we are all related).

So many treasures too, this was so cool. Love how you are preserving history and keeping it as close to how it used to be, that isn't easy. It reminds me of folk art and how people would use what they had to build art and other things with. You and Robin have done a great job, That new back porch addition is so creative.

Wow thanks for doing this. It has so many memories from my childhood growing up in Young back in the 60's. My parents build the Pioneer Market down the road on the south side. I think it may be a car repair place now, not sure. We purchased the old Allen Dairy property. I miss those days.

It's amazing the number of abandoned gas ⛽ throughout the Southwest. It wasn't uncommon to find six or more gas stations abandoned in a small town. There were other buildings that were crumbling. But that high number of gas stations that were abandoned seemed to me to be a little out of the ordinary.

I bought gas there, January 1, 1970. Old man pumped a handle back and forth to fill the glass tank atop the pump. Then gravity filled my VW Bug's tank when he squeezed the nozzle. The old guy then looked at the graduated marks on the glass tank and took a pencil from behind his ear did some math on the white wooden post by the gas pump. Told me the total, and I paid him in cash.

Dear Old Folks Adventure, @ 14:22 you pan past an old loading dockhand truck with a fuel can on it. It is military and was used up until mid 1942. Ten gallons of fuel became too much for the re-fuelers to lift by hand and the 5 gallon ones became more common. It is kinda on the rare side, it even still has the bungs in it. So please don't get rid of it. I had to ad more. @ 14:42 the truck you have is a Chevy G-506 military cargo truck, don't get rid of it either...
